Every year at this time the coun-ty gets a little smaller. This phenomenon is not caused by a rip in the space-time con-

tinuum or is it a matter of geographical wonder its called fair time.

In 2014, over 239,000 people made their way to Turlock to visit the fair dur-ing its 10-day run thats more than four times the normal population of this Valley town. The sheer number of fairgoers is amazing, but a crowded fair-grounds isnt what I am talking about.

In a recent street survey, more than half of the people who were asked what their favorite part of the fair is said vis-iting with friends. It is not uncommon at the fair to run into old school mates, extended family members and your mail carrier all in one night.

Because of its appeal to young and old and those with varied interests, the fair is the ultimate gathering place. Some might say that we now have social media as a universal gathering place. One hundred years ago, the 10 days of the fair might have been the only way to reconnect with old friends. But today, one only needs to visit Facebook and within minutes you can be reunited with everyone in your high school graduating class.

Its true that social media has made reunions of all kinds just a few clicks away, but seeing someone face to face and sharing in the experience of the fair creates bonds that no computer screen can emulate.

The fair is also where people with like interests can meet for the first time. Sit-ting in the stands next to you during the

demolition derby could be your next best friend, or boyfriend. After the apple pie competition is judged, those whose passion is baking might just strike up a life-long friendship or find a new cu-linary partner. If you have two antique tractors sitting in your garage, then the fair is definitely the place for a little gear talk.

The fair is also the best place to make lasting family memories. I still remem-ber my first trip to the county fair. The corn dogs, carnival rides and farm ani-mals were great, but the best part was walking around the fair with my mom and dad and experiencing everything together.

I was able to pass along that experi-ence with my own daughter, with trips to two different county fairs and two state fairs. My little girl is all grown up now, but she still makes the fair a must-go event every year.

I am already looking forward to shar-ing the sights, sounds and tastes of the fair with my 3-year-old grandson. This multi-generational love of the fair is not uncommon here in Stanislaus County. Take a look around during your next visit to the fair and you are sure to see happy families making life-long memories.

    The ultimate gathering place

Its Christmas in July at The Stan-islaus County Fair with the annual toy drive.

On July 16, the Stanislaus County Fair and The Salvation Army will hold a toy drive at the Fair gates. Fair guests who donate one or more toys will re-ceive two carnival ride tickets from But-ler Amusements. All donations will help local children receive gifts for Christmas this year.

The Fair is about making memo-ries for the children in our community. We must help those in need and make

Christmas a special time for our chil-dren, said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesper-son for the Fair. We are happy to be a part of a great cause.

Last year guests donated more than 1,500 toys for The Salvation Army. No donation is too small for The Salvation Army. Every donation will help give toys to children during Christmas. In 2014 the Modesto Citadel received 800 toys. The Turlock Corp received 726 toys. If a guest forgets to bring a toy, remember the Fair has vendors that sell toys.

Guests can download the official new and improved Stanislaus County Fair Mobile App for an interactive Fair experience at the palm of their hands. Schedule out your week with concerts, arena events, and interactive exhibits with just a click away.

This new app will give our guests an engaging, more opportunities to be more social, as well purchasing Fair tickets, said Adrenna Alkhas, spokes-person for the Stanislaus County Fair. If your summer plans include coming

out to the Fair, you will definitely want to check out this app and start schedul-ing your favorite events.

This interactive Mobile App will give you all the Fair details with entertain-ment schedules, exhibit information, Fair map, driving directions, and much more. It features an interactive map of the Fairgrounds, daily Fair schedules, and more. Search for Stanislaus Coun-ty Fair in the app store. App is iPhone and Android compatible.

The Stanislaus County Fair partnered with Turlock schools this spring to en-courage kids to make healthier choices at lunch time. The 20/20 Fruit & Veggie Contest rewarded elementary students who made healthy eating choices with the chance to win free tickets to the fair, a bicycle or other prizes.

Punch cards were distributed to ele-mentary students in the Turlock Unified School District in April to keep track of their healthy eating choices. Each time a student chose one fruit or vegetable option for their lunch for 20 days, the student then received a punch on their punch card. Once the students punch card was completed, he or she was en-tered into a grand prize drawing. Four students from each elementary school in the Turlock Unified School District was chosen to win.

We wanted to enhance our Kids Club program in a fun, yet educational way this summer, said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. The goal was to partner with a

program that has excelled by introduc-ing innovative approaches in educating kids on better nutritional choices.

The contest ran through TUSDs Real Fresh nutrition program. Since 2007, TUSD school meals have included no trans fats, and there is increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables through the districts Real Fresh menu.

Anytime that the Turlock Unified Child Nutrition Department can team up with a partner like the Stanislaus County Fair to educate children and their parents about our rich agricultural heritage and educate them on all the fresh local products that we provide in our school lunches every day which will help guide them to a lifelong change of eating fresh healthy foods, I will do whatever is necessary to be a communi-ty partner in that endeavor, said Scott Soiseth, director of Child Nutrition at TUSD.

Alkhas said that if the contest is suc-cessful in Turlock this year the fair will extend the partnership to other districts next year.

The Stanislaus County Fair and Uber are teaming up to bring a more acces-sible way for guests to attend the Fair.

The Fair and Uber are offering an exclusive promo code for guests who will download the Uber app and use it during Fair time. Guests will be able to use the promo code STANFAIR15 to receive $20 off their first Uber ride (for new users only).

Our partnership with Uber offers guests new opportunities to simplify their travel experience to and from the Fair, said Adrenna Alkhas, spokes-person for the Stanislaus County Fair. Uber will allow guests to visit and en-joy the Fair without having to worry about their own transportation.

Uber is evolving the way the world

moves. By connecting riders to driv-ers through their app, they are making large events more accessible. From their founding in 2009 to their launches in over 100 cities today, Ubers rapidly expanding global presence continues to open more possibilities for guests and bring them closer to their cities.

A free and convenient service for guests is the Fairs shuttle program. Guests can park at CSU Stanislaus on Crowell Ave or park at Pitman High School in Turlock on Christoffersen Pkwy and take the shuttle bus to the Fair. Shuttles depart every 15 minutes to and from the Fairs arch gate. Schedule for the busses are 4:30 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and 11:30 a.m. to midnight on Saturday and Sunday.

The 10-day run of the Stanislaus County Fair is just around the corner and that means a bevy of entertain-ment is headed towards Turlock.

The fair will open the festivities Fri-day with a performance from musi-cian Colt Ford. With his innovative blend of country music and hip-hop rhythms, Ford is a cultural force who is ready to go from cult status to a house-hold name.

Colt Ford will bring a different country edge to the Fair and we are thrilled to have him, said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stan-islaus County Fair. His high energy performance will make for the perfect opening night of Fair.

For those wanting to get some laughs at the fair, the night to go will be Satur-day, when comedian Carrot Top takes the stage.

With three decades of comedic per-formance, Carrot Top is one of the most popular, recognizable, and suc-cessful comedians in America. After years of playing to sold-out shows throughout the country, he has now made his home in Las Vegas and is cel-ebrating his tenth anniversary with the Luxor Resort and Casino in 2015.

People fall in love with his show because it is current with todays head-lines, said Alkhas. His comedic work is uniquely hilarious and we are extremely excited to have him perform on our stage.

Itll be la fiesta del verano (the party of the summer) with a slew of interna-tional Hispanic entertainers perform-ing at the Fair, the first of which will be 3BALLMTY on Sunday.

A Latin pop trio from Monterrey, Mexico, 3BALLMTY, is known for their tribal guarachero style of music.

Fair-goers will have a chance to get Two Tickets to Paradise on Monday when singer Eddie Money takes the stage.

Money has been making music and delivering it to his fans since the mid 70s. The rock legend has recorded over a dozen albums and has done numer-ous projects in television and film. Per-forming 150 or more shows every year, Money is always touring somewhere.

My fans are the best, most loyal fans a guy could ask for. They keep coming back for more and Im not gonna stop until they make me stop, said Money.

Triple platinum recording country music icon Martina McBride will be

performing at the Stanislaus County Fair on Tuesday.

Martina McBride has one of the most recognizable voices in the coun-try music industry, said Alkhas. To have a legend like Martina performing at the Fair is very thrilling and some-thing everyone will be looking forward to.

To date, McBride has had 20 Top 10 hits and six No. 1 smashes. As a result, McBride is ranked as the most played woman vocalist on country radio be-tween 1999 and 2010 and was honored with an induction into the cast of the Grand Ole Opry in 1995.

Well-known and loved rock band America will be taking the stage at the Fair on July 15.

Americas long-standing music ca-reer has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best known hits, which include I Need You, Tin Man, and Sister Golden Hair, were the foundations of 1970s Top 40 and FM rock radio.

Singer Bret Michaels is promising Nothin But A Good Time when he comes to the Fair July 16.

Michaels is a multi-platinum global superstar who has turned his passion for music into a versatile brand that includes record breaking tour sales, reality TV stardom, legendary songs that have sold over 32 million records, product endorsements, and being a de-voted philanthropist.

Poison, one of rocks most iconic bands, he helped define the rock-n-roll scene on the Sunset Strip. Their massive success includes selling over 30 million records worldwide and numerous hit singles. His solo career has charted its own course with multiple solo albums. His 2010 album, Custom Built, topped the charts, reaching #1 on Billboards Hard Rock list.

Country singer Jerrod Niemann will be performing at the Fair on July 17. Niemann recently followed his Re-cord Industry Association of America gold certified multi-week No. 1 smash, Drink to That All Night, with his High Noon albums second Top 40 single, Buzz Back Girl. Niemanns chart-topping major-label debut, 2010s Judge Jerrod & The Hung Jury, pro-duced the No. 1 hit and RIAA certified platinum digital single, Lover, Lover, and the Top 5 and RIAA certified gold digital single, What Do You Want. His sophomore release, Free The Mu-sic, hit shelves last year and featured the Top 15 single Shinin On Me and the emotional ballad Only God Could Love You More.

The legendary rock band Grand Funk Railroad will roll into town July 18 for a

show at the Fair. Grand Funk Railroad is extremely excited to be touring in 2015, marking a 46 year milestone. Known as The American Band, the high-energy five-piece group will play 40 shows all over the United States this year.

The Fair will close out with a show from Banda Machos on July 19. Banda Machos have recorded over 24 record la-

bel productions, selling millions of CDs and have had many performances all over the world.

Hispanic acts are one of the most popular attractions we have at the Fair, said Alkhas. Their performances never disappoint and we are very excited to have them all performing at Fair.

All the headlining acts will be per-

forming on the Bud Light Variety Free Stage. All shows begin at 8:30 p.m. and are free with the price of Fair admission.

The 2015 Stanislaus County Fair opens July 10. Discounted Fair admis-sion tickets, unlimited ride wristbands, and the Fair season pass are now on sale through 7 p.m. July 9. Visit the Fairs website at www.stancofair.com.

The roots of FFA originate from a time when boys were losing interest and leaving the farm. Walter S. Newman chose to attain a solution to the prob-lem with Edmund C. MaGill, Harry W. Sanders and Henry C. Groseclose, staff members of the Virginia Polytechnic In-stitute Agricultural Education Depart-ment. Their core focus was to teach that agriculture is more than planting and

harvesting its a science, its a business and its an art. Today, the National FFA Organization remains committed to the individual student, providing a path to achievement in premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

The Stanislaus County Fairs Junior Livestock program offers this oppor-tunity. The program presents a unique

chance for school-age youth, primarily members of 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA), to competitively exhibit and auction their prize livestock on the open market. Only those animals iden-tified by the judges as top-quality and market-ready are sold at auction. The 2014 47th Annual Replacement Heif-er Sale grossed $516,350 ($4,212 per head). The 2014 50th Annual Junior

    Livestock Auction grossed $795,262.

Let your imagination run wild at the Stanislaus County Fair with two new exhibits. The Stanislaus County Fair introduces the interactive But-terfly Discovery Center and the Mind Works Exhibit.

We try to make each Fair better than the year before, having new ex-hibits achieves that, said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stan-islaus County Fair. We are extremely excited to have such wonderful hands-on attractions at this years Fair.

The Butterfly Discovery Center, sponsored by Sutter Gould Medical Foundation, features two world-class exhibit galleries inside the E-5 build-ing next to the Arch Gate. The first gallery takes the wonderfully popu-lar butterfly feeding program and en-hances the experience in the new Flut-ter Garden. The second component of the Butterfly Discovery Center is the new Exploratorium gallery that brings the fun to science education. The Exploratorium showcases the life and diversity of butterflies and moths through graphics, video and interac-tive exhibits.

Mind Works Exhibit, presented by Sky Trek Aviation, will replace the Wizards Challenge and is a 5,000 sq ft attraction featuring a collection of puzzles, giant classic games, bubble arena, a construction zone and a toddler area that will tease and chal-lenge minds of all ages. Many of the displays in this fun and interactive exhibit are STEM-based and involve critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.

Whether you are 1 or 101, you will find something to enjoy and energize the mind. To complete the attraction, provided are uniformed, trained, and friendly staff that assists with moder-ating the games, offer puzzle hints or play a game with you.

    BY ALYSSON AREDAS

Following the announcement made by Stanislaus County Fair Chief Executive Officer Chris Borovansky in March re-vealing his intent to retire, the Stanislaus County Fair Board of Directors has unanimously voted to name Matthew Cranford as his replacement.

Cranford, a California native, has worked at the San Mateo County Fair since 2008 and in 2009 he was promoted to fair manager. He grew up in the Cen-tral Valley area and graduated from Cali-fornia State University, Stanislaus with a Bachelor in Science degree in Business Administration in 2004.

Cranford is also a Trained Crowd Manager with International Association of Venue Managers, as well as a Certi-fied Festival and Events Executive with International Festivals and Events As-sociation.

To come back to my hometown is very exciting for me, said Cranford, who was not present at Mondays Board meeting. This Fair is known for its com-munity involvement, leadership, and innovative events, and I have some big shoes to fill with Chris Borovansky leav-ing.

The board revealed that Cranford was chosen as the new fair CEO after six months of searching, 11 applications, and final interviews along with three other candidates.

The new CEO will be inheriting a well grounded Fair tied to community, as well as an established Friends of the Fair Foundation, which has been built by CEO Chris Borovansky, said Stan-islaus County Fair Board President Ray Souza.

Borovansky took over as head of the Stanislaus County Fair as the elimina-tion of state funding saw county fairs around the region either close or short-ened their runs. He helped to see the fair continue its historic 10-day run, mainly through community partnerships like the Friends of the Fair Foundation.

This leadership through financially troubling times is what Borovansky con-siders his greatest accomplishment while at the Stanislaus County Fair.

Before coming to the Stanislaus Coun-ty Fair, Borovansky served as CEO for the Jackson County Fair in Central Point, Oregon for 21 years and was So-noma County Fair manager for many years. He grew up in the fair industry and worked at the California State Fair as a

teenager for eight years. One of his first memo-ries of the fair business was visiting the old California State Fair-grounds.

Im elated the board has found a candi-date as strong as Matt, said Borovansky. Hell be a great fit with a tremendous board of directors and staff.

Cranford will begin with an entry level salary of $84,720. Currently, Borovan-sky earns $98,700.

Cranfords official start date as the fairs new CEO is Aug. 5. Borovansky is slated to serve until Aug. 31. The board reports that the two men will work to-gether throughout the month in order to ensure a smooth transition.

June's Board meeting also marked the inaugural meeting for two new directors Jeremiah Williams and Angelica An-guiano who were appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown earlier this month.

Williams, a Modesto resident, has been the owner of Oak Crafts by Jer-emiah since 1986. He is a member of the Modesto Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Gallo Center for the Arts Board of Trustees, King-Kennedy Memorial Center Board of Directors, Modesto Community Gang Task Force and the Boys and Girls Club of Stan-islaus County Board of Directors.

Williams is also a charter member of Project Uplift and president of the Greater Modesto Tree Foundation, chair of the City of Modesto Independence Day Parade and community relations di-rector of United Pentecostal Church of Modesto.

Anguiano of Waterford is an attorney at the Law Offices of Mark S. Nelson for two years and a law clerk for four years. She was a legal assistant at the Law Of-fice of Aaron Anguiano from 2004 to 2008. She is a member of the Parent Institute for Qualify Education Board of Directors, Haven Womens Center of Stanislaus County Board of Directors and Murals in Motown. Anguiano has earned a Juris Doctor degree from Hum-phreys College Laurence Drivon School of Law.
