IamdelightedtowelcomeyoutoourTechnicalResourcesHandbookfortheFacultyofArts,Computing,EngineeringandSciences(ACES)atSheffieldHallamUniversity.TheFacultyofACESencompassesabroadrangeofdisciplines,bringingtogethertechnicalandcreativesubjectsandlinkingundergraduateandpostgraduateteachingwithworld-leadingresearch.Theworkingenvironmentisdesignedtoprovideoutstandingfacilitiestosupportspecialistareasofstudywhilealsoencouragingcross-disciplinaryinteractionandfosteringadynamicworkingenvironment,inwhichengineeringcaninformfashiondesignorartcaninformcomputerscience.Thisuniqueopportunitytoworkacrosstraditionalsubjectboundaries,toaccessfacilitiesandexpertiseoutsideofconventionaldisciplines,liesattheheartoftheethosofthefaculty.
Inrecentyearswehaveinvestedheavilyinourfacilities,includingourworkshops,studios,computersuitesandengineeringlaboratories,soyouwillfindthemamongsttheverybestavailableinanyuniversityintheUK,givingyouaccesstostateoftheartequipment,softwareandotherresources.
However,themostvaluableresourceyouwillhaveatyourdisposalduringyourtimeatSheffieldHallamisaccesstoourdedicated,experiencedstaff.ThetechnicalteamwithinACES,withitsprofessionallyqualifiedstaffandpracticingprofessionals,hasawealthofexpertiseacrossallareasofourprovisionandcomprisesengineers,scientists,designers,silversmithsandjewellers,fineartistsandmediaartsspecialists.Theteamarecommittedtousingtheirdiverserangeofskillsandknowledgetosupportpracticalaspectsofyourwork,whetheritisproducingacomplexengineeringprojectorcreatingdesignworkforaninternationalexhibition.

Duringnormalworkinghours,FirstAidisprovidedbylocalFirstAiders.Theirnamesandtelephonenumbersaredisplayedonthegreensignspostedneartobuildingexitsoratthetopofstairwells.
Outsideofnormalworkinghours,FirstAidcoverisprovidedbySecuritystaff.Theycanbesummonedbydialling01142252000or888fromaUniversityphonetoinformthemoftheaccidentandyourlocation.
Asrequired,SecurityControlwillcalltheAmbulanceServiceonyourbehalfastheywillbeabletodirectthemtotheincidentmoreaccurately.
Pleasenote:Inlifethreateningsituationse.g.wherethecasualtyisunconsciousorishavingasuspectedheartattack,strokeetc,theninordertosavevitaltimeanyonecandial999(internally)direct,however,theymustalwaysgetsomeonetocontactSecurityontheinternalemergencynumber888toletthemknowtheirlocationsotheycanprovideextraassistanceifneededandmeettheambulance.
Riskassessment
Whilstmostoftheroutineactivitieswithinworkshopsandlaboratorieshavebeenriskassessedonyourbehalf,youwillneedtocarryoutriskassessmentsforanyresearchwork,finalyearprojects,assignments,degreeshow,CreativeSparkexhibitionsandanyoff-siteactivitiessuchasfilmshoots,interviewswithmembersofthepublicetc.Youwillbeadvisedbyyourtutorsandtechnicalstaffofthisrequirement.
Youmustnotcommenceworkonyourprojectoractivityuntiltheriskassessmenthasbeencompletedandapproved.Youwillnotbeabletoaccessequipmentandresourcessuchascameraequipmentorstudiofacilitieswithoutacompletedandapprovedriskassessment.

Studentsshouldgettoknowtheirassemblypointswhichareindicatedonthefireactionnoticesdisplayedthroughoutthebuilding.

Workshoprules
Studentsmustnotattempttouseanyequipmentthattheyhavenotbeentrainedtouse.
Personalprotectiveequipmentrelatingtotheequipment/materials/processesbeingusedmustbeworne.g.safetyglasses/helmets,safetyshoes,earprotectionandoverallsetc.Safetyfootwearorenclosedshoesmustbewornwhenenteringtheworkshop–canvasshoes,sandals/flip-flopsarenotpermitted.
Looseclothingmustbeavoidedandlonghairtiedbackwhenworkingonmachinery.
Priortouseallguardsmustbeinplace,adjustedcorrectlyandcheckedtoensuretheyarefunctional.
Allmachineusersmustknowwheretheemergencystopbuttonsarepositionedonmachineryorintheworkshop.
Whenworkingwithhazardoussubstances,studentsmustcomplywiththeinstructionsprovided,readthelabelsaffixedtocontainersandadheretohazardwarnings.
Studentsareresponsibleforensuringgoodhousekeepingintheareaoftheworkshoptheyareusingandgenerally.
Allaccidentsandincidentsmustbereportedtolocaltechnicalstaffassoonaspossible.
MostinjuriesarecausedbyStanleyknivesandchisels–itisimportanttokeepbothhandsbehindthecuttingedge.
UseofMP3players/devicesisnotallowed.
Foodordrinkmustnotbeconsumedintheworkshops(bottledwaterpermitted).
Studentsshouldnotentertheworkshopiftheyarefeelingtiredorunwell.
Workshoptechniciansorteachingstaff,canatanytimedenyastudentaccesstotheworkshoporanyworkshoprelatedequipment,iftheyfailtofollowtheserules.

PersonalProtectiveEquipment(PPE)Guidelines
Youwillbeissuedwithfreeeyeprotectionforuseintheworkshops.Pleaseremembertobringthiswithyoutotheworkshops.
Theextractionequipmentistheretoprotectyou,butoccasionallytherewillbeaneedtowearadustmask.TheseareavailablefromtheMaterialsandToolCentre.
Whenhandlingpaint,someadhesives,andchemicalsyouwillberequiredtoweargloves.TheseareavailableintheroomswheretheprocessestakeplaceandfromtheMaterialsandToolCentre.
SafetyfootwearwillberequiredwhenaccessingthePrecisionWorkshoparea4L27.
Inotherareasoftheworkshopswearstrongfootwearthatcoversthetopofthefoot.Ifyouarewearing‘unsuitablefootwear’,suchassandalsorflipflops,youwillbeaskedtoleavetheworkshop.
Someprocessessuchascastingandweldingrequirespecialisteye,faceandskinprotection.Thiswillbeprovidedforyouandyouwillbegivendetailedinstructionsinitsproperusewhenyouaretrained.

AlthoughITteachinglaboratoriesareheavilytimetabled,ACESstudentsmayaccessthemforself-directedlearningwhennotbeingusedforformalteachingsessions.TheITteachinglaboratorytimetablesarepostedoutsideeachoftheindividuallaboratoriesandoncourseShuspacesites.
InadditiontotheACESspecialistITLaboratoriesthereisarangeofspecialistsoftware,groupworkandotherfacilitiesinEMBInformationWorks,theAdsettsLearningCentre,EMB3311,Owenlevel3EditSuites,andCantor9224.ManyofthePCsintheselocationscanbebookedincludingthosewithspecialistACESsoftware.DetailsofhowtobookPCsandgroupstudyfacilitiescanbefoundonShuspace.
