There are three Fluker Posts located in
Gunbower Forest.
G1 - Nursery Track: This post is located next
to stop 10 on the Gunbower Forest Drive*.
Or, enter Nursery Track from Cohuna Island
Road on the south-west side of the forest
during flood periods as Nursery Track will be
cut by floodwater. This post is located on a
minor floodrunner in the forest, a few
kilometres north-west of where
environmental water enters the forest and
begins to break out of Spur Creek and
disperse through the forest.
G2 - Iron Punt Track: Enter the forest via
Spences Bridge Road, and turn right into Iron
Punt Track. This post faces directly into the
most south-west corner of Reedy Lagoon,
known as one of the most important
wetlands in Gunbower Forest due to its
magnificent vegetation.
G3: Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk*
(Stop 4) or Dry Swamp Track: Accessable via
Koondrook, enter the forest by crossing over
the historic Condidorios Bridge. Begin the
Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk* – the post
is next to stop 10.
The Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk Or, in your vehicle, follow Dry Swamp Track
until you cross over a wooden bridge, near
the intersection of Coughlan Track. Here
you will able to see the walking track signage
and the Fluker Post. This site may be less
accessable during flood periods as it is on
the main waterway inside the forest where
all floodwater exits the forest.
* Available from local vistor information centres or the Department of Environment and Primary
Industries website by searching “Gunbower Forest Drive” and “Koondrook Red Gum Forest Walk”.
“A what..?” A Fluker Post – it’s a wooden
post (named after its designer – Dr Martin
Fluker) with a top that is cut at such an
angle that any digital camera can be
placed in the “camera cradle” so that the
same perspective is recorded every time.
We’ve installed Fluker Posts so you can
assist us with our ecological monitoring
program. It’s easy for you to join in.
Simply use your own camera to take a
photo from a Fluker Post and email it in.
The Fluker Post project
– join in!
The Gunbower Forest project is delivered by the North Central Catchment
Management Authority (CMA) in partnership with Goulburn–Murray Water,
and Parks Victoria, and coordinated at a state level by the Department of
Sustainability and Environment. It is part of The Living Murray program, a joint
initiative of the New South Wales, Victorian, South Australian, Australian
Capital Territory and the Commonwealth governments, coordinated by the
Murray–Darling Basin Authority. Together with Koondrook–Perricoota Forest
in NSW, Gunbower Forest is one of The Living Murray’s six icon sites.
The Fluker Post Project
By taking a photo at the Fluker Posts in
Gunbower Forest, you are joining a
community-based environmental
monitoring project that has been
operating since 2008 and now has 80
Fluker Posts in the field.
This research project, run through
Victoria University, aims to bring
together the people who are actually
out enjoying the natural environment,
land management agencies and
academics in a way that monitors the
visual condition of often-fragile natural
environments.
The changing conditions evidenced
may include the early warning of
adverse impacts such the introduction
of new weeds or the spread of disease
such as phtophthora, interventions
such as revegetation work or flooding,
or general erosion caused by weather
or human interaction.
According to Dr Fluker “the beauty of
this system is its simplicity – people out
walking see the post, read the
instructions on the sign, take a photo
with their own camera, and email it in.
We then arrange the photo in
chronological order in a publicly
accessible webite.”

Our Fluker Posts are located at sites which will be generally accessable, even during
periods of flooding. We encourage you to visit each of them regularly.
