THE EDITOR

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

– Jim Rohn.

One of my favourite film scenes is from Pitch Perfect when Rebel Wilson is sprawled over chairs whilst her fellow a capella ladies are running laps up and down the stairs. “I’m horizontal running,” she says! THAT, is so me. Though I

went through a period of time when I lived at the gym, nowadays it’s all about Friday brunches, catching up on the latest TV series, and lazy days by the pool. So, I needed the body issue just as much as any of you out there who are looking to get back into shape the healthy way.Check out our ultimate A to Z guide to Get Your Summer Body on p25. This is our round up of delicious super foods, fun exercises, and other steps that you can take to becoming healthier. Remember, exercise to be fit, eat well to nourish your body, and trust the process! If you prefer to get your health boost from a vacay then turn to p47 for our picks of the best fitness and wellness retreats around the world, there are some seriously cool places for everything from adventure, detox, relaxation, and weight loss. When all the body talk is said and done, there’s so much more in FACT this month. Let’s talk fashion, cars and summer elegance. We teamed up with Ferrari for an exclusive shoot at the stunning Marsa Malaz Kempinski Doha - check out our Summertime Confessions journey starting p68. If arts is your thing then you’ll be interested to learn more about the fabulous Marvellous Creatures exhibition at the Museum of Islamic Art. We talked to the curator, Dr. Leslee Michelsen to find out what makes the works on display so fascinating (p37). As well as some amazing foodie features in this issue and monthly deals to look forward to in May, of course, the biggest and most anticipated event of the month is going to be our very own FACT Dining Awards. If you haven’t already voted, head to www.fact-magazine.com/awards to have your say.

I have made a promise to restart my gym schedule (it’s going to happen, for real), what healthy change will you be making this month? Tweet us @FACT_Qatar and let us know. Let’s be each other’s motivation. Summer body, here I come…

Katara Plaza Set for 2016

provides year-round comfort utilising a state-of-the-art system that uses the latest ground cooling technology.

Among the deals inked already, is the arrival of the well-known French department store Galeries Lafayette to Qatar and the French natural mineral water brand evian. Work on Galeries Lafayette has already commenced with the world famous architect Bruno Moinard taking on the creation of the stores.

Then there’s the Children’s Mall! Its design portrays the form of two big gifts wrapped in red and gold. The commercial complex seeks to surprise visitors and draw a smile on their faces, creating an atmosphere of joy and fun. The goal of Katara Plaza project is not restricted to the inclusion of chain stores alone. It will also offer a complementary and integrated experience, rich and vibrant, beginning with its landscapes and sandstone buildings, and ending up with its interlocking passages, arches and breezy walkways. Roll on 2016!

Shoppers and diners in Doha have much to look forward to for 2016 as the Ali Bin Ali Group unveiled its plans to run the Katara Plaza project, set to open its doors next year. The project is being built on an area of over 38,000 square meters, in the Cultural Village Foundation Katara, and is poised to be a unique commercial plaza that includes a series of features, which are the first of its kind in Qatar and the region.

Katara Plaza project will provide a unique and distinct experience as it blends a classical architectural experience with traditional heritage, reflecting the vision and objectives of the Cultural Village Foundation. Katara Plaza will offer a relaxed atmosphere and designated spaces for shoppers, including some of the most famous brands in the world. This project will also offer recreational experiences, in line with culture and entertainment. It will exemplify innovation with a pioneering, air-conditioned and open space that

LISTEN UP

Popular Portuguese chicken chain Nando’s is bringing people together for good food and fun times with the brand new Nando’s Majlis initiative. Other than at a Nando’s restaurant, friends get together at home, in a park, on the Corniche, at the office or in a majlis – and that’s where memories are made. even if these people can’t make it to Nando’s and are craving the PeRi-PeRi taste, Nando’s can bring it straight to them. The whole idea of the Nando’s Majlis is to encourage people to order Nando’s when they are sitting together, hanging out, or in a majlis. As part of this campaign, a special majlis menu which consists of platters to share, has been introduced. At Nando’s the motto is minha casa e sua casa, meaning my home is your home in Portuguese – and now customers can feel right at home with their flavourful food, surrounded by family and friends.

GO: The Nando’s Majlis menu details and prices are available on www.nandos.qa/majlis-platters.

Frequent flyers in Doha will be please to learn that the country’s own Qatar Airways has been named the “World’s Most Dependable Airline” in a comprehensive study of all major carriers, published by CBS MoneyWatch and conducted by recognised travel site, WanderBat. Qatar Airways came out on top in a list of 22 international airlines based on factors like on-time percentage, low cost to check bags, and average age of airline fleet. His Excellency, Mr. Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, says: “We are pleased to once again be recognised as leaders in world aviation. Our unmatched dependability comes from an enduring commitment to serve our guests on-time, in comfort and with the hospitality-centric dedication and convenience they deserve.

“Qatar Airways is the model for the next-generation of international airlines,” he continued. “Having recently unveiled the state-of-the-art Hamad International Airport in Doha – which was ranked the best airport in the Middle East at the Skytrax Awards ceremony – Qatar Airways’ hub has the world’s finest aviation facilities, allowing us to manage our modern fleet with the utmost operational precision.” Qatar Airways has seen rapid growth in just 18 years of operation, to the point where today it is flying a modern fleet of 152 aircraft to 146 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America.

Scottish Traditions Meet Contemporary Singing

FACT caught up with the Scottish folk music band,

Breabach during their visit to Doha when the five-piece

performed live at Al Rayyan Theatre.

fact magazine 19

Who plays which instrument and how much time and practice goes into preparing for being stage-ready?Megan Henderson - Fiddle, Vocals and Step Dance. James Lindsay - Double Bass and Vocals. Calum Maccrimmon - Pipes, Whistle, Bouzouki and Vocals. James Mackenzie - Pipes, Flute and Vocals.Ewan Robertson - Guitar and Vocals. We aim to rehearse before a tour whilst at home, but there’s not much time to rehearse when we are on the road. So we utilise our sound check times to practice during the day before a gig.

Do you still get nervous performing and are their any rituals you do beforehand? We don’t have much of a ritual before a show, as long as we’re well fed, the sound on stage is good and the instruments are playing well - we’ll be happy. Theres always a bit of nerves before any show, but after the first number we always have a good time.

Any advice for upcoming musicians?Listen to as much music as you can and practise hard - but always be sure to enjoy what you play!

What’s coming up for you, for the rest of 2015?We tour the UK throughout May, and then we are going to tour Canada through June and July. The rest of the summer will see us playing festivals and home and starting work on our 5th album. We’ll also be out in Germany in November. You can keep up with our goings on at www.breabach.com or all the social media outlets!

Describe the band’s sound…Breabach is a five piece contemporary folk band from Scotland. We play a diverse and lively mix of traditional and contemporary material through the use of bagpipes, fiddle, and flute, guitar, double bass, step dance and gaelic/scots vocals.

How was it playing in Doha? The Al Rayyan theatre was a fantastic place to play and the crowd were so welcoming and up for it!

You bring together Scottish traditions with a contemporary touch – have you faced any challenges doing this and how did you overcome them?We challenge ourselves when it comes to putting the music together as we endeavour to treat the music with as much respect as possible, whilst still putting our own contemporary influences in there. It’s actually quite a natural thing, traditional/folk music has always moved with the times and even though we play traditional instruments and tunes they still hold relevance today.

Your most memorable moment from your music career to date…We had an amazing time at the Woodford folk in Australia bringing in the bells for Hogmanay 2014.

Who are your musical heroes and why are these figures particularly inspiring for you?All five of us come from different musical backgrounds and bring these influences into the band, whether it’s the music of Martyn Bennett (the late genre-defying scottish musician), Louden Wainwright, Angus Maccoll, Dick Gaughan - it all goes into our melting pot.

The best thing about being in the band...Music, Food, Travel - not necessarily in that order.

Where did Breabach start?Breabach started about 10 years ago in Glasgow, Scotland through the traditional music session scene in the city.

Flax SeedSThey’re super popular in this region, and for good reason. Flax seeds have some seriously good health benefits. This little seed is a quality source of both important dietary staples; protein and fibre, which can be taken through supplement tablets, as well as in ground and oil form. A regular dose of flax seeds can help to reduce the risk of such health issues like liver disease, depression, and high cholesterol to name but a few benefits.

Gluten-Freegluten is the compound protein found in wheat, rye and barley that causes bread to rise. It’s also a staple of granola, some pastries and toast. Some people are severely allergic to gluten, and many others suffer from some level of gluten intolerance, which causes bloating and gut inflammation. If you want to eat clean and get healthy for summer, head over to the excellent gluten free section at Spinneys supermarket and see what yummy treats are on offer – we can guarantee that your tummy will thank you for it.

Hula HoopinGHoop yourself to your body best in time for summer! Hula hooping is so much fun, and helps to burn mega calories as well as sculpting your body and blasting off belly fat! The great thing about hula hooping is that you can do it alone to your favourite tunes or you can get together with friends for a workout with a difference that will certainly keep you on your toes.

KinSanitY WorkoutIt’s been dubbed ‘the hardest workout ever put on DVD’ and, trust us, we tried it for 20 minutes and can vouch for whoever said that! Insanity (www.beachbody.com) has become THe workout to get you beach body ready in 60 days. Forget regular high intensity training, because this workout programme turns old-school interval exercising on its head. If you’re serious about getting in shape for the summer and up for the challenge, we say, go for it!

kiloSLet’s be honest – the last few kilos are always the toughest to shift, and that’s where exercise classes and personal training can really help. get down to the fitness centres at the St. Regis Doha and join in with sessions like Dare (high impact exercise with full body weights), Tae Bo, Pilates and much more. You can even get a fitness assessment and personal trainer to put you through your paces in order to reach your weight goals.

JuiCinG It seems that nowadays just about everyone is jumping on the juice bandwagon; from Hollywood celebrities to the busy housewife next door, juicing, whether that’s for a diet cleanse, for an energy boost, or to adopt a healthier lifestyle, it seems that having a juicer at home is the new fitness accessory must. There are plenty of great healthy juice recipes online, and one of our fave local companies that delivers too is RAW ME (www.raw-me.com), with raw, vegan, fresh beverages for a nutritional cleanse.

puSH-upS It might not be your instant exercise of choice but the push-up is a complex compound move that works your chest, biceps and core – basically, if you’re serious about rockin’ that summer swimsuit then doing a good set of push-ups will help you get there. Push-ups come in lots of different variations and you can make use of other gym equipment, like a fitness weight ball, to help you get to grips with your preferred push-up workout.

laSer taGOk, let’s get real. Laser Tag is fun, like huge amounts of fun. But it’s also a physically demanding activity, but because of all the fun you’ll be having, you won’t even feel like it’s a workout. This popular pastime is not only one of the best ways to spend time with family and friends, but it can be a totally different way of getting in some exercise while hanging with family and friends. get your dose of laser tag at Gondolania Theme Park in Villagio Mall.

meditationA healthy body always starts with a healthy mind, so exercising your soul and learning to destress is essential to getting ready for the summer days. Most spas and health centres in town offer meditation classes, but this is something that you can ‘DIY’ at home as well. get yourself into a good routine of exercise-meditation-healthy eating, and you’re on your way to happy days this summer.

nutriBulletDon’t juice, don’t blend – only extract; that’s Nutribullet for you! A coveted machine making waves around the world for its healthy extracting technique. Prepare juices with fruits or vegetables, Nutribullet will give you a healthy, fibre-rich and nutritious juice. With easy steps to follow, this machine breaks down and crushes stem, seeds and skins of food, releasing the nutrients to make it a super food. No chunks, unbroken seeds or mess to clean up; this multi-tasking tool deserves a thumbs-up.

orGaniCOrganic is trending; sometimes costly but a clear-cut healthy choice to make. Organic food has more of the antioxidant compounds linked to better health than regular food and contains higher levels of essential minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and iron that are major components in our daily diet. For a quick-pro-intro, get down to Monoprix - the French store in West Bay has two fully-stocked aisles with great organic foods and gluten-free, natural produce.

QuinoaQuinoa went through a time of food awakening (much like kale is right now) and is now one of the most popular super foods, loaded with protein, fibre and minerals. Quinoa is usually prepared as a salad, and boy has it become a popular menu item in the region! It’s light, delicious and comes with a wealth of health benefits. If you’re quinoa-savvy, you will know that the nutty taste and delicate texture make it a perfect addition to your daily diet.

runninGNot only is running good for the lungs and heart but hitting the pavement releases those happy endorphins that will leave you on a high after a workout. Running is one of the top ways to burn off extra calories and the second most effective exercise in terms of calories burned per minute. On that note we definitely recommend running to be added into your workout schedule.

S

RT

SQuatSLooking for some serious results from your workout routine? Look no further than the 30-day squat challenge. Just add this exercise into your daily workout, increasing the number of squats you do by a little more everyday. There’s no equipment required, you can do squats in your pjs, whilst waiting for your coffee to brew in the kitchen, and even in your back garden! Doing squats might just be the smartest fitness move to make before summer arrives.

tai-CHiTry some slow, soft and graceful moves with the martial art form of Tai-Chi. Learning to do Tai-chi correctly is the key, without which you wouldn’t experience the calmness and relaxation that it can provide. This exercise can prevent or ease many ills and could be the perfect activity to spice up your regular workout routine. Join Tai-Chi classes today for a healthy body, mind and soul.

unWindWith the stress and grind that comes with living in a busy city and having an intense and hectic work schedule, it’s necessary to take your health seriously. Without doubt, exercise and healthy foods are the key, but along with that the body needs to destress and unwind. Take a trip to the spa or join a retreat programme for some rejuvenation and let loose. Your body needs some pampering too!

VitaminSFeeling sluggish? You might be low on certain vitamins. But don’t fret, a quick boost is all you need to get your system revved up and going. Load up on vitamins with a delicious smoothie, salad, cereal, or even daily supplements. That’s the great thing about getting your needed vitamin dose – you can get it through food, drink, or in a bottle from local health stores.

YoGurtYogurt is a favourite among all ages, thanks to the tantalising flavours available in stores now. The calcium in yogurt signals the fat cells to pump out less cortisol, making it easier for you to drop pounds, while the amino acids help to burn fat; are you ready for flat abs? Pinkberry is a fun place to try out some healthy yogurts with your desired flavour and toppings.

ZuCCHiniZucchini is one of our favourite veggies and there’s plenty of it in this region. It’s extremely rich in vitamin, minerals and phytonutrients, making it a welcome addition to a calorie-controlled diet. Zucchini is a type of summer squash, which has a slight sweet flavour to it and can be eaten raw or cooked. Cut zucchini into long, thin strips, and mix with lemon juice, olive oil and pepper for an easy-to-prepare but flavorful salad for a healthy food fix.

WaterWhether you want shinier hair, glowing skin, or a healthier body; a drink of water, eight glasses a day, to be specific, is the world’s best and natural beauty elixir. Make sure to be toting a bottle or two with you to get the daily recommended two litres. Hydrate the body with the right amount of H2O and reap the benefits in time for summer.

Tell us about the process by which the artefacts and items being displayed were curated?Curating an exhibition begins at least two to three years before the opening, when the curators look through the museum’s collection to find the best examples of artworks that support the exhibition narrative. This process is part of our normal collection research, where we are constantly trying to find out more information about our artworks and the stories that they could tell. Sometimes, as in this case, curators have an idea for an exhibition many years before they actually have a chance to work

on it. I have wanted to explore ideas of narrative and storytelling in Islamic art for a few years now. What challenges, if any, did you face to make this exhibition happen, and how were they overcome?Every exhibition has a unique set of challenges – often ones that you didn’t anticipate precisely, whether they are logistical or philosophical. The important thing is to keep sight of the original goal; to exhibit artworks, which engage diverse audiences, tell a compelling story, and encourage people to look at art and think about what it means to them.

Why do you think it’s important for people to come and see the works on display at the exhibition?Museums can be intimidating places – for everybody. People are worried that they won’t understand the art, or that their children will be bored. Marvellous Creatures was specifically designed to be warm and welcoming for everybody – families, individuals, groups of friends, and schools. It’s colourful and inviting, and the only thing that you need to know before you walk in the door is what a story is. Have you ever heard a story? Have you ever told a story? Then you’re perfectly prepared! It’s a friendly approach to our amazing collection of artworks at MIA.Tell us about some of your favourite or most interesting pieces on display and which stories they reference… Well, I love all of the objects – that’s why I chose them! Some of the highlights for me include the Franchetti tapestry (CA.2) in the “Air” section, a glorious silk textile that has an absolute horde of animals on it, including some beautiful phoenixes and peacocks. There is also an astrolabe (MW.354) in the “Water” section that is much more than a navigational device – if you look very carefully you will see amazing fish and sea creatures. It makes me think about who would have used this instrument, and the wonders and dangers they might have seen at sea.

ARTS

Page 39: FACT Qatar May 2015

fact magazine 39

How long did it take to curate all the items and what factors went into your decision making process?Curating an object list for an exhibition takes around one year. First, curators choose artworks that best tell the story of the exhibition. Then, they speak with lots of other departments – like Conservation, or Galleries – to decide together that the objects are in good condition; can be displayed correctly in the galleries etc. MIA is a very collaborative place and an exhibition is a group effort. Why do you think the exhibition will appeal to visitors?Stories, across cultures, appeal to a very deep need for human connection. Oral traditions are how we passed on information for the great majority of human history. So that timeless fascination with stories is obviously appealing. Then we have selected a magnificent variety of animals – eagles, sea monsters, dragons – that will also, we hope, excite and interest our visitors. Who isn’t interested in dragons? Why was Doha, specifically, chosen to showcase this exhibition? All of the objects on display are from the collections of Qatar Museums. These are artworks that belong to the people of Qatar through the generosity of their leaders. Through this exhibition, therefore, we want to speak particularly to Qatari and expat families about our shared cultural heritage, via these beautiful objects and incredible animals. Doha is the perfect place to do that. What messages do you hope visitors will take away with them from the exhibition? The animals in the exhibition have leapt off the page of stories and have decorated all kinds of artworks: glass, ceramics, and textiles. I hope they also leap into the imaginations and memories of our visitors. If visitors share stories – new or old – with their family and friends, and see that Islamic art is rich, colourful, and diverse that would be wonderful. If our exhibition makes them happy, then I’ll be happy too.

GO: Marvellous Creatures: Animal Fables in Islamic Art will run at MIA in the Special Exhibitions Gallery, 1st Floor. visit www.mia.org.qa for more information.

BIG SCreeN

direcTor: Elizabeth BankscasT: Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp

Why iT’s WorTh WaTching? When Welcome to Me debuted at Toronto Film Festival, the response was a mixed one. You either take it literally, which is the film making fun of the mentally ill by reducing their suffering down to a handful of quirks; OR, you applaud Kristen Wiig for carrying an entire film completely on her own shoulders (this is seriously some of her best work). One thing is for sure, Welcome to Me wastes no time trying to explain itself. You might see it as the modern-day equivalent of visiting an asylum, seeing the patients do “weird stuff ”, and then calling their behavior “quirky,” or you might see it as a simple and comical idea delivered in a no-nonsense, casual manner. Either way, borderline personality disorder turns out to be more of a laughing matter than it probably should be in Welcome to Me. This is a tough one. We see Alice’s deep-seated emotional and psychological issues on live TV, what some may call a train wreck of personal vendettas and frustrations as viewers watch on in morbid curiosity. The 86-minute film will provoke and start real conversations about such mental illness disorders, but we’ll leave it to you to draw your own conclusions.

Welcome to MePitch Perfect 2

What’s it about?Alice Kleig (Kristen Wiig) is a single woman with borderline personality disorder who ends up winning $86 million in the lotto. She quits her meds and and buys herself a talk show on an infomercial network for $15 million. The two-hour show Welcome to Me is a segment exclusively about herself.

What’s it about?Prepare to get pitch slapped with round two of everyone’s favourite collegiate a capella group, The Barden Bellas enter into an international competition, that no American team has ever won before.

direcTor: Shira PivencasT: Kristen Wiig, James Marsden, Linda Cardellini

Why iT’s WorTh WaTching?Based on the trailer to the follow up of 2012’s smash hit Pitch Perfect, this is going to be an utter delight. All Pitch Perfect 2 needs to do is build on all of the qualities that made the first movie such a winner – the charm, sweetness, sincerity, its cheek and wit, and, of course, more quotable one-liners – mainly from Fat Amy! There is somewhat of a more grown-up tone here as Elizabeth Banks shows the Barden Bellas coming of age and approaching the end of their college run. There are still plenty of laughs in this underdog comedy’s insight into the cutthroat world of competitive show choir. If you loved the first one, you should be well on board for this one too.

“Either way, borderline personality disorder turns out to be more of a laughing matter than it probably should be... this is a tough one” Welcome to Me.

“All Pitch Perfect 2 needs to do is build on all of the qualities that made the first movie such a winner – the charm, sweetness, sincerity, its cheek and wit, and, of course, more quotable one-liners” Pitch Perfect 2.

Probably one of the most underrated indie bands operating out of the UK, Palma Violets return with their second album, the 17-track Danger in the Club. The four-piece is well-known for having a raw-edge and psychedelic rock & roll sound. Let’s take a look at title track and latest single Danger in the Club. Zane Lowe released it as one of his ‘future exclusives’ on BBC Radio One, so there’s already huge support for radio play. The track’s familiar vivid 60s-style guitar riffs; moody punk vocals, and rowdy lyrics, show that Palma Violets have kept their youthful and chaotic sound intact. There’s a choppy pop-punk, garage-rock vibe to Danger in the Club, especially when a harmonica is thrown in for good measure and the song fades to a calm closure. The band revealed to NME that the album’s material is all original demos taken from their writing sessions at The Doghouse studios in Wales. This desire to release unedited music is a refreshing approach in today’s music industry and we love that Palma Violets’ energetic flair has progressed from their successful debut album 180.

give this man a mic and watch him make music magic. We all know that Jamie Foxx has mesmerising talent and a spellbinding stage presence (just YouTube one of his live shows and you’ll see what we’re talking about), and now, after a five-year music hiatus, the grammy-award winning singer is making a comeback with the aptly titled Hollywood. After his grand performance of You Changed Me, with Chris Brown, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Jamie Foxx has set the scene for what we can expect from his upcoming fifth studio album. In the past he’s managed to pull big names like Justin Timberlake, Drake, Twista and Rick Ross for his album efforts, and with Chris Brown on the lead single, there’s bound to be plenty of other great collaborations. If the energy on the album is anything like the dynamic duo’s performance on TV, then expect flames (in a very good way). We’re hoping for some more grown-up material where Jamie Foxx’s voice and instrument-playing skills shine through, away from the synthetic sound often found in the mainstream music world.

The art of luxury is refined to a tee at le Royal Monceau, Raffles paris. Blending the romance of France’s capital with the legendary name and hospitality of

Raffles, this hotel is everything that travellers to the city would want, and so much more. It’s chic, sophisticated and boasts a location in the heart of paris that will get your traveller heart beating every time you step out the front door. Originally opened in 1928, le Royal Monceau, Raffles paris, remains one of the essential spots in which to experience the beauty, style and social buzz of this extraordinary city. The hotel is aesthetically stunning, appealing to every visitor who wants a piece of classic European life with a touch of grandeur. It was recently refurbished by French designer philippe

Starck, and you’ll find his art deco-inspired creativity in the decadent, modern décor like exposed brickwork, lavish carpets and iron railings, as well as other plush furnishings. Team all of this with a fantastic location, impeccable facilities and service, its daring mix of art and architecture, culture and cuisine, and design and high drama, there’s no wonder why le Royal Monceau, Raffles paris continues to attract the la belle élite of today. We checked in on a beautiful spring day and were met with immaculate service and friendly staff who, as we learned throughout our stay, were willing to go above and beyond to make our time in paris and at the hotel more than comfortable. For example, art enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that the hotel has a dedicated art concierge – seriously, how awesome is that?

The luxurious chic décor is in tune with the Art Deco heritage of the building, but has a striking and inspiring individuality. The hotel has 11 different luxurious rooms and suites to choose from and a total of 149 quarters including three exquisite presidential Suites. We’d highly recommend the Junior Suite; decked out with swish, duvet-like carpet, individual artworks, huge beds, a spacious living area, a mirror-lined bathroom with monsoon shower and a separate dressing room. The state-of-the-art equipment, including a television concealed behind a mirror, as well as the unique art pieces on the wall and spacious walk-in closet, fit seamlessly with the art deco styling.

It’s 45 minutes from both airports, Roissy Charles de Gaulle and Orly; 30 minutes from Gare de lyon; and a mere 20 minutes from Eurostar station – Gare du nord. We have to applaud the fantastic service, the attentive staff, the remarkable facilities and the perfect location; le Royal Monceau, Raffles paris is truly one of the finest luxury hotels in the world and a worthy addition to the Raffles lineage.

We loved the Clarins amenities, the fact that you can get a Wii and playstation upon request, and, wait for it, an acoustic guitar so you can express your creativity – amazing! This charming suite is great for couples or small families who want a little extra touch of class during their stay.

Elegant la Cuisine, where breakfast is served, has an open kitchen with a contemporary French menu – try the pan- sautéed beef fillet from normandy, and don’t forget to indulge in pastries from pierre Hermé. At Il Carpaccio – a Michelin-star holder – things get deliciously gastro. This restaurant is dedicated to Italian fine-dining and boasts stunning Sicilian baroque decor in a conservatory overlooking the garden – perfect for a romantic dinner. located at the heart of the hotel, le Bar long is a high, long, narrow and luminous bar, that welcomes guests all day long for cocktails and tapas, set in the style of an old-school parisian salon. The 650S iS everyThing The 12c ShouLd have been, and Then SoMe. and The 650S Spider iS even beTTer. driving iT for four dayS waS one of The beST experienceS of ThiS journaLiST’S career…

THOUGH THE impeccably engineered 12C was a thoroughly impressive debut in the world’s supercar market for McLaren Automotive, it did have its critics, who said that the car simply wasn’t exotic enough to compete with the likes of the Ferrari 458, its main rival.

So, last year McLaren responded with this, the stunning 650S. The DNA from McLaren’s awesome P1 hypercar is instantly recognisable at the front end, with those McLaren logo-shaped headlights and dramatic front air scoops. Add in some tweaks to the rest of the body and new alloys, and you have a car that has upgraded from looking ‘well-engineered’ to ‘sexy’.

And the Spider version that we drove adds to this significantly. Like a beautiful woman, it looks superb at first,

but really takes your breath away when you see it with its top off !

In addition to the exterior design changes, the 650S boasts an uprated version of the same twin-turbo V8 that the 12C had, taking power output from 592hp to 641hp (650PS, hence the name) as well as some tweaks to enhance the chassis. The end result is that the 650S drives and feels like a high performance machine in every way imaginable. It steers with a precision that would make a brain surgeon jealous. There’s an accuracy to every movement you make on the wheel that inspires an incredible level of confidence – you just point and shoot and the car goes exactly where you’re expecting it to.

And I don’t need to go into too much detail about the handling and balance – they’re just as superb as you’d expect

from a mid-engined supercar built by a company that owns an F1 team, and sitting on a set of purpose-made Pirelli P Zeros!

And the power… McLaren are not shy about the fact that this is a twin-turbo beast, and in fact celebrate the fact by putting the turbos right behind your head. This means that every time you put your foot down they spool up with a satisfying whoosh as the instant acceleration propels you forward like a steam catapult. Turbo lag? Not so much.

That is not, however, all you hear, as the delicious howl from the 3.8-litre V8 mixes with the scream of the turbos to create an awesome symphony of power. Flooring it in a tunnel is an experience you will never forget.

What all this equates to is a 0-100km time of three seconds, and it will

hit 200km/h in just 8.4 seconds, up to a claimed top speed of 333km/h (207mph).

The interior of the 650S delivers everything required, if not everything desired. It looks great, with lashings of leather and Alcantara and a premium, well built feel to it all. It has its own functional and stylish Android-based IRIS operating system through which I was able to link the car’s infotainment to my phone’s WiFi hotspot, and then use apps like Google maps, TuneIn radio, and more.

On the downside, the shape of the carbon fibre tub means that it suffers from the same problems as the 12C. It means huge door sills that you have to clamber over when you’re getting in and out of the car. It also means that there’s not a great deal of width in the footwell, especially as your legs are essentially sharing space with the front wheel.

There also isn’t a great amount of storage space in the car at all. The front-end trunk would fit two small weekend bags at best.

Page 58: FACT Qatar May 2015

fact magazine58

In the passenger cabin, you’ll find very few spaces to plonk things like mobiles, books, iPads, etc., and though there are two drinks holders, they’re placed awkwardly behind the floating centre console.

But you see, none of this bothered me at all, because once you climb behind the wheel, all of these trifling matters fade away. You don’t want luggage in your 650S, it would only add unnecessary weight! Cup holders? Pah… No-one’s bringing food or drink into MY McLaren. I don’t need luggage space for two, because I don’t even really want a passenger – unless I’m taking you for a quick spin to show off my 650S, you’ll only distract me from the driving experience.

Because, like the 12C, the driving experience is what the 650S is all about. It is nigh on close to perfection, especially with the Spider’s roof folded away. However, where the 650S improves on the 12C is that it’s beautiful. Of all the 650S models I’d seen to date, this gorgeous Spider, in McLaren’s ‘Storm Grey’ with the carbon fibre package, was pretty much perfection in terms of options in my opinion.

And this isn’t just my opinion either – every time I parked this car, I returned to see a crowd gathered taking pictures. People stopped us to comment on it. Cars would pull alongside us on the highway with a camera phone poking out of the window. It turned heads wherever we went, and that is exactly what it’s supposed to do.

The looks, the power, and the performance: this car is a supercar, in every sense of the word!

“because, like the 12c, the driving experience is what the 650S is all about. it is nigh on close to perfection, especially with the Spider’s roof folded away. however, where the 650S improves on the 12c is that it’s beautiful.”

new limits for two straight days. From Sunday 9:00 am to Tuesday 9:00 am, the drivers had to complete 1,351 laps of the circuit. “At Nissan we always relish a challenge and while this endurance event was as tough as they come, we had no doubt the Altima would succeed brilliantly. “A vehicle must boast the best in durability, quality and reliability to go through 48 hours of non-stop driving, and these are trademarks of the Altima,” says Nissan’s Middle east Managing Director, Samir Cherfan.

The SamSung galaxy S6 edge

PLUGGED-IN

The new galaxy edge phones are the most important that Samsung have released in recent memory. This is because they represent the first completely new innovation from Samsung in a while, and something that

no other phone offers, in the shape of its functional curved screen. Not just a cosmetic change, although it does serve to make the phone look superb, the ‘edge’ of the screen also adds some functionality in accessing favourite contacts or apps by swiping down the side, as well as displaying notifications and updates, and much, much more. Samsung have really gone all out to make sure that the ‘edge’ screen isn’t just a skin-deep gimmick, but an integral part of the phone’s functionality. In terms of storage and muscle, the S6 edge boasts pretty much exactly the same as the normal S6, with

a 2.1ghz 8-core processor and a Quad HD Super AMOLeD display. The downside of these new generation Samsung phones is that the battery and memory cards are no longer interchangeable, so in terms of storage you’re stuck with what you bought, and if you want the extra space, you’ll have to spend the extra money from the outset. One area in which the new S6 phones have really outdone themselves is the camera – both the S6 AND S6 edge now boasts excellent image quality both

front and back and a range of new features that really make them stand out.

Verdict: Some might say that the Edge is a gimmick that you pay an unreasonably high premium for, considering you get almost exactly the same specs for significantly less on the standard S6. However, many people want, and are happy to pay for, premium, and that is certainly what you get with the S6 Edge. It looks

better, feels better, and instantly impresses.

Chef Moghadam arrived in Doha four years ago when he was asked to open Parisa, the first fine-dining Persian restaurant in The

Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, featuring traditional dishes with a contemporary, modern twist. “That’s how everything started,” Chef Moghadam says.

He started working in the food industry at the age of 12, at his uncle’s restaurant. “There is where I learned and grew, step by step,” Chef Moghadam recalls. “Then I worked in different cities in Iran such as Tehran, Kish, Shiraz and Sanandaj. In each city I tried to learn their special and local signature dishes. Then I came back to Tehran and started to get in touch with European cuisine and methods,” he adds.

For this special Chef ’s Table visit, we’ll be served a number of the restaurant’s exquisite dishes. On the menu, for starters, there is Mast O Khiar – yogurt with chopped cucumber, raisins and walnut; Salad Shirazi – chopped cucumber, tomato and onion with a refreshing dressing of lime juice and olive oil; and there’s also Kashk O Bedemjan – fried eggplant topped with sun dried yogurt, fried onion, fried dried mint and fried garlic.

As the dishes arrive on the table, we’re excited to tuck in and give our verdict for all the Persian cuisine aficionados out there. The ingredients are fresh, the recipes authentic and the taste sensational (seriously, salads never tasted SO good!). We loved how well the flavours complemented one another - the sweet and savoury, especially the combination of raisins and walnut, as well as the cool hit of lime juice, and all the different textures of the chopped vegetables – a perfect introduction to Persian food.

Talking of ingredients, Chef Moghadam admits that finding the right ones in Doha does prove to be a challenge sometimes. He says: “There are many ingredients in the Persian kitchen that we don’t find in Doha, so finding a balance has been very challenging, especially because we want to give the people authentic Persian cuisine.”

Mast O Khiar Salad Shirazi Kashk O BedemjanPersian Mix Grill Baghali Polo ba Mahicheh

Menu

For mains it’s the mouthwatering meat-lovers favourite, the Persian Mix Grill with ground lamb kabab, chicken breast kabab, lamb chops, beef fillet and tiger prawns, all marinated in saffron, onion and olive oil. If you love good quality, delicious meat, cooked to your desired perfection, this is what you should order on your visit to Parisa – the tiger prawns hold their own too!

The best was, however, yet to come; the restaurant’s signature dish, Baghali Polo ba Mahicheh, is brought out and we’re in awe. This is slow-cooked lamb shank served with broad beans dill rice. The tender meat slides beautifully onto the fork, and partnered with the rice, this is a superb main course, reflecting a true taste of Persian cuisine.

So, who is Chef Moghadam’s culinary inspiration? “My mother and family,” he says. “I come from a household where everything was fresh and homemade. All five of my brothers are chefs, so food and cuisine has been a very important factor in my life.”

To round off Chef Moghadam’s culinary creations, guests may sample desserts such as Falude-Ye Shirazi, frozen vermicelli sorbet with rose water or Shole Zard, saffron rice pudding with pistachio and almonds.

Even the interior and setting at Parisa will have you mesmerised. The design reflects a stylish ambience complemented by decorative ornaments and items featuring Persian tradition. All items have been

handpicked and especially brought to Doha. There’s an elegant yet relaxing and cosy atmosphere with an outdoor terrace offering beautiful views of Doha Bay with its yachts and dhows.

Expect nothing short of fine-dining excellence at Parisa, and with Chef Moghadam and his team at the helm, we’re sure that this restaurant will continue to deliver the highest quality food in a sophisticated venue for a very long time.

W e arrive early, eager to check out the newest ‘pearl’ in town that happens to be in the brand-

new 5-star Spanish hotel, Meliã Doha – we get ready to experience a culinary experience at the famous Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor (an award-winning restaurant). Mastermind and celebrity Chef, Sanjeev Kapoor is renowned for his kitchen skills and is even a judge on Masterchef India. He’s already opened numerous eateries around the world and now this popular brand has landed in Doha. As soon as we walk in, we are immediately transported to India: the aroma, the waiting staff, and even the beautiful, décor. With dark and vibrant purple couches, there’s a lounge vibe here that will really appeal to foodies. We begin our dinner with appetisers; guntur chilli peppery prawns - clay oven baked tiger prawns seasoned with the popular chillies of Andhra Pradesh – absolutely divine. This was the perfect dish to kick-start our tasting experience!

Meliã Doha is situated in the vibrant centre of Doha, and so the wonderful terrace of this venue offers impeccable views of the city’s skyline, glittering in a dreamy turquoise body of water. It’s an incredible feeling to be feasting on some of the best in Indian cuisine with such a breathtaking view to admire – some would call it surreal. As we continue with our delectable Indian journey, we are served with what seems to be more delightful appetisers: rawa khumb, a

semolina-crusted, volcanic Gouda-pepper mushroom dish, with warm broad bean and onion salad. As we continue to devour absolutely everything – the mushroom dish was packed with flavour – we noticed, and appreciated, the kindness and hospitality of the staff members towards the restaurant’s guests.

Before moving onto the next dish, we were invited to take a sneak peek at the fabulous kitchen. We were impressed to discover a great charcoal oven (specially delivered from India to the restaurant).

This and so many other ingredients and methods of cooking that were explained to us, really highlighted the 100 per cent authenticity of the Indian food served at this lovely fine-dining restaurant. If you’re up for a leisurely lunch, Signature is open from 12noon to 3pm; and if you decide to go for a special dinner, the restaurant is open from 7pm to 11pm for you to enjoy.

Main course is an absolute treat. We’re served Dum Nariyali Prawns, a velvety prawn curry cooked and served in a tender coconut – just exquisite. Another

must-try is Murgh Parda Biryani - a chicken cooked with basmati rice and flavoured with saffron. As our bellies get filled to the brim and we’re all sitting there with a big fat happy grin, there’s nothing more to say than wow! If you want a tranquil atmosphere, excellent food and top-notch service, Signature by Sanjeev Kapoor should be next on your to-visit list for dining in Doha.

B razilian-born Mateus Vieira, Head Chef at Rodizio restaurant in Crowne Plaza Doha has a challenge today. I’ve asked him to teach me

how to prepare some exquisite dishes for the perfect Latin-American gathering. He’s chatty and witty with real South American

flair when it comes to food – I felt right at home, just like I was with a close friend. Let me tell you: if you’re looking for truly authentic Brazilian cuisine, make sure to visit this foodie haven at Crowne Plaza Doha – I’m pretty sure your Latin palate will be put to the test and very pleased by the end.We start off with appetisers; Brazilian frittas with garlic mayonnaise. The ingredients to make this scrumptious delight includes; spring rolls sheet, chopped palm heart, sliced asparagus, dry oregano, cream cheese, egg yolks, olive oil, corn oil, and a dash of salt and pepper to taste. In a sauté pan we cooked the sliced asparagus with olive oil until soft. In a mixing bowl add the palm heart, salt, pepper, oregano, asparagus and mix gently. Then, take the spring rolls sheet and brush egg yolks on all the four sides, place the mixture in the centre and roll it in triangular shape. Using the corn oil deep fry the frittas until they are a nice brown colour. Dipped in the delicious garlic mayo (also made in-house), these went down a treat. Chef Mateus and his entire team at

Rodizio’s kitchen made this cooking experience so much fun. Whilst we conversed in Portuguese about life back home, we also continued the culinary journey onto our main course – Picanha Steak with farofa, fresh vegetables and South American salsa. First, we rub salt and pepper to the meat, on both sides, seasoning the steak, and we place it on the hot grill and cook until desired doneness. Then it goes in the oven for eight minutes. If you’re wondering what farofa is: it’s a mixture of red onion, panko breadcrumbs, turkey bacon, parsley and salt and pepper – a very popular dish in South America. All the farofa ingredients are mixed in a hot frying pan with some olive oil. In a separate pan we fry two eggs and later added these together with the farofa mix.For our veggies, it’s simple; in a sauté pan we melt butter then add the mixed vegetables and season with salt and pepper, cooking for one to two minutes. For the tomato salsa, cut the tomato in small cubes without seeds, place in the mixing bowl then add the remaining ingredients (onion, lime juice, chopped coriander and garlic, and salt and pepper) and mix well. This is used as a garnish on top of the steak or

on the side. Being the foodie lover that I am, I jumped in to savor some tantalising meat and farofa. I can sincerely say that Rodizio is seriously all about the meat; the steak is juicy and the sides complement it beautifully, both visually and when it comes to taste. This one’s a must-try. We end with a refreshing dessert; Brazilian brigadeiro with passion fruit mousse. Let me give you the run down of this exquisite treat, step-by-step. Using a blender, add 400ml of passion fruit juice, one can of condensed milk and 20grams dissolved gelatin, and mix well. Whip 400ml of cream until fluffy and bind gently with the previous preparation. Using a small pot add another can of condensed milk with 2tbsp cocoa powder and 1tbs butter, bring

to reduce on low heat and keep mixing until it’s thick consistency. After that, using a glass place the brigadeiro on the bottom and the passion fruit mousse on top. I was in food heaven with this incredibly yummy dessert! I love trying new recipes and exploring different cuisines from all over the world, and the Cucina De badir experience this month allowed me to do this plus so much more. I would highly recommend Rodizio for a traditional Brazilian foodie experience, as well as for meat-lovers and anyone who wants to savour a taste of Latin American food at its best. Nos vemos hasta la próxima en la Cucina De Badir.
