Looking at some key terms:

“After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.” Vs 1

• “So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life, sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow. Gen 44: 30-31

• “Became one” – Some translations say that “the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David.”

• The Hebrew word means “was knit,” or better, was “bound up”. This is a strong term, and is used in Genesis 44:30 of Jacob’s love to Benjamin:

“Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress; my eyes grow weak with sorrow, my soul and body with grief. My life is consumed by anguish and my years by groaning; my strength fails because of my affliction, and my bones grow weak. Because of all my enemies, I am the utter contempt of my neighbors and an object of dread to my closest friends— those who see me on the street flee from me. I am forgotten as though I were dead; I have become like broken pottery. For I hear many whispering, “Terror on every side!” They conspire against me and plot to take my life. But I trust in you, Lord; say, “You are my God.”

Psalm 31:9-14

• So David endured those 15 years of torment and torture from his own King, because the Lord was with him. His anguish is poured out in the book of Psalms.

“ ‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’

2 Sam 7:11-16

• David became a type of Christ through his suffering and agony.

“He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.”

John 1:11

“The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. Acts 3: 13-15

I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” Matt 26: 27-29
