The Center for the Arts—with its unique interdisciplinary environment ofclassrooms, studios, galleries and performing spaces—provides a nexus forartistsandtheiraudiencesthatsupportsawidevarietyofartisticandscholarlyactivitiesinwhichAlbrightstudentsengage.

When Hillary came to Albright, she already knew she wanted to teach.

The question remained: what subject?

It was in her sophomore year that the busy softball player decided upon

art. “I loved the art building (the Center for the Arts) from my first visit

to Albright. You can be so creative there and work at all hours,” says

Hillary. Experienced at drawing, sketching and especially still life, Hillary

thought she knew exactly what she wanted to study. But that was before

she took her first class in sculpture with Tom Watcke.

“I went into that class thinking I already knew a lot about art,”

says Hillary. “At first, it was frustrating, but he pushed me as an

artist and student. As an educator, I plan to set those same high

standards for my future students.”

Another class that changed Hillary’s expectations of herself

as an artist? Life Drawing. “It wasn’t just hard rules. We had to

engage with live models,” explains Hillary. The class, offered

by her adviser, Richard Hamwi, introduced Hillary to many

techniques for drawing human figures and to work with

difficult tools, such as the charcoal pencil.

Most of all, under Hamwi’s guidance, Hillary gained

confidence in her own sense of artistic style. “I created

my own technique and a personal edge, rather than doing

things the way I thought they should be done.”
