Bowls: Well the bowling season has come to an end but members are keeping in touch in various ways. The greens are out of bounds due to seasonal work being carried out and won’t be playable until about March depending on the weather, but members are compromising and enjoying playing on the Astro Turf when it is not needed by the hockey teams. Anyone thinking about starting bowling can still be introduced to the basic skills on the Astro so please don’t hesitate to contact the Bowling Club if you would like to join. Coffee mornings will continue first Wednesday of each month in the pavilion as usual so if anyone is around and fancies dropping in for a coffee please feel free to do so. The Christmas get together is usually great fun and will be held on 7th December. And there’s more…If you enjoy playing Whist then come along to the Bowling Pavilion on Tuesday afternoon, 1.15pm. This is a new venture at the club and so far there are about 14 players with numbers rising and it is programmed to run through the winter months. Bowls presentation lunch will be held at the Sports Club on 4th December to celebrate individual and team successes.

Squash: Wakefield Squash Club is the ideal club to meet your squash playing needs. New players are always welcome - any age, any standard! They have a thriving Junior section with girls and boys competing at Local and National levels as well as in the mini-leagues and club competitions. So come and be a part of one of the most progressive clubs in the region. The Squash Club has two England qualified Licensed coaches offering individual one to one and group coaching for beginners, improvers and advanced players. See website for further details: www.wakefieldsquashclub.co.uk.

Rifle and Pistol: The season is quite busy with on-going competitions and Wednesday nights is always popular with prospective new members and probationary members that have recently joined the Club. Due to high demand for places, R & P introduced an appointment system to provide more certainty, for people attending the range for the first time, that they will receive the opportunity to shoot on the night. Therefore please don’t forget to reserve your place first to avoid disappointment, via their website: www.wrpc.co.uk.

Chess: The Chess season has started again and the Club continues to have two teams in the Saturday Yorkshire leagues and an evening team in the Huddersfield league. The Junior membership continues to grow with over 20 members at the moment. Wakefield’s first team have started the new season very well having won their first two matches against a team from Leeds and the other from Bradford. The Club are looking to return to the top division again. Peter Shaw played in the British Championships during the Summer and scored a very creditable 5.5 out of 11 against Michael Adams (the best player in England and in the world’s top 20). Peter put up a good fight against him and only lost after a very long game. Club nights are on Mondays in the Bowls pavilion (6.30pm - 9.30pm) and everyone is welcome.
