EngageAllowing users to Like your page means they can connectwith you through Facebook. It’s common for users to postquestions or comments on a wall and also provides youa great opportunity to connect!

Themes such as Banned Books Week are a great startingpoint to engage your community in a conversation. Many libraries (and us!) took the opportunity to simplypost “What is your favorite banned book?” and let thecomments roll in. Providing a topic for your audience todiscuss is a good way to generate activity on your page.

Engage with your community by showcasing them within thelibrary. Traverse Area District Library provides a great example ofsharing on Facebook a shelf dedicated to their town’s footballteam, titled “Tackle A Good Read!” Showing pride in yourcommunity on Facebook can help to reach those who might havenot initially found out about it had a friend not Liked or Sharedthe post.

Connect One of the best things about Facebook is that it allowsusers with similar interests to connect. Not only can youconnect with your community, but also other librariesand librarians from across the country. By Liking a pageyou will be able to see their activity pop up on yournewsfeed. This is a great way to share what is going onat your library and to gather ideas on what is going on atothers! September was Library Card Sign Up Month, andmany libraries took to their pages to state why they thinkit’s important to sign up for a library card. One exampleis the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, in their 30 Days,30 Ways to Use Your Library Card Facebook posts.

One final note, don’t forget to cross promote! Sharingyour blog activity on Facebook and tweeting out someof your Facebook posts is a great way to reach yourentire audience.
