    A Very Brief History of Fabric (Cloth)

    Humans have been making fabric for about 50,000years

    Few examples from history because fabric wears out

    or rots.Materials used by prehistoric people: animal skins,

    fur, leather, plant fibres and tree bark

    4 main fibres:

    linen (flax plant)

    Cotton (plant)

    Wool (sheep)

    Silk (silkworm)

    Very labour intensive to turn plants or wool into afibre that could be woven

    Very labour intensive to weave a fabric

    Until the Industrial Revolution (late 1700s mid1800s) fabric was expensive because it took so much

    work to make it.Result: Fabric: Used and reused until nothing left

    Rag Rugs

    Rugs/mats have been made for 1000s of years

    Anything that can be made into a yarn or string can beused to create a rug

    In the past, people made rag rugs because they didnthave much money

    Today, people make rag rugs for various reasons:
