Author’s investigation into the ’canned’ hunting industry in SouthernAfrica where lions are bred in captivity for the sole purpose of being killedunder unnatural conditions by high–paying trophy ’hunters’. In doing sohe exposes the myth of South Africa’s conservation image and the sale ofhunting as a necessary integral part of conservation. Trophy hunting is seenas a relic of the colonial past where ’conservation’ means exploitation of wildanimals and what remains of their habitat for profit. An African Renaissancemust include a rebirth of environmentalism on the continent and a reforgingof spiritual empathy for wild animals seeing a dismantling of colonial huntingpolicies.
