Fairbanks arts association Fairbanks Arts Association was established in 1966 to promote and support the arts in the Fairbanks area. The Association is funded by private, corporate, and foundation memberships and donations, City of Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. With assistance from professional staff and charitable volunteers, the Association provides services in five areas: Visual, Literary, Performing, Community Arts and Arts Education. The Association also helps raise funds for other arts groups, provides technical assistance and support for arts programming, encourages and advises individual artists beginning organizations and sponsors workshops and educational meetings.

Forty-two years after it’s incorporation in 1966 the Fairbanks Arts Association remains as the center for arts in Fairbanks. Originally named the Alaska Association for the Arts, FAA began as a organization “aimed at promoting, developing, implementing and sponsoring programs in all branches of the performing and creative arts, the association aspires to provide the incentive for the growth and appreciation of the arts in Alaska.” One of the first goals of the new organization was to develop a state arts council that would be eligible to receive federal funds. With the encouragement of the then Governor Bill Eagan, Mrs. Geneva Emmal, who was already the chair-man of the association, worked tirelessly to set the stage for what was to become the Alaska State Council on the Arts. She then served as the first chairman of the new council.

The first annual report of the Alaska Association for the Arts in April 1967 noted among its accomplish-ments that they were “Responsible for successful legislation to establish the Alaska State Council on the Arts.” Also noted among the many accomplish-ments that year was the association’s involvement in assisting in planning the civic and performing arts center on the A-67 site. The center, still home to the Fairbanks Arts Association, is now called the Alaska Centennial Center for the Arts.

Among the many things accomplished that first year, a children’s film series was also begun. This film series, revived in 2006 has been expanded to include foreign, silent, and classic films, which are shown once a month throughout the winter season. For more on the February film, please turn to page 7.

Featured Speaker: Anne Hanley

Treat your Muse to an all day retreat designed to help you generate new material, gather ideas for future projects, and rejuvenate your writing process. You will be treated to a continental breakfast, and lunch, and a stimulating day of discussion, writing, and camaraderie, all in the beautiful setting of Four

Winds Foundation (http://www.alaskafourwinds.org).Bring your creative self, your journal or notebook, books you find inspiring to share, and information on literary opportunities or writing events.

Anne Hanley, playwright, poet, screenwriter, and the first playwright to be named Alaska State Writer Laureate. She lives in Fairbanks, where she is the CEO, staff and maintenance crew of Panache Productions. Anne has an MFA in Film from UCLA and is an associate member of the Dramatists Guild of America and the Society of Chil-dren’s Book Writers. She is a founding producer of The Looking Glass Group Theatre in Fairbanks.

Anne believes that “writing is basic to our human nature. The role of the State Writer should be to encourage all kinds of people to write. Writers do not own writing any more than actors own speech. We are all writers. The act of writing is one of the best therapies. It can help us understand our lives. It is a way into the secret recesses of our hearts. It is a tool to help us figure out who we are and what is important to us. Everyone has something to say. Everyone has the right to write.”

Anne’s columns on over 80 Alaska writers can be read in the Sunday Life section of the Anchorage Daily News and in the Sundays section of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

Denali Arts Council (DAC) is a community arts organization focused on creating and nurturing community-based opportunities for artistic expression. Although located in Talkeetna, it serves the entire northern Susitna Valley, primarily the communities of Trapper Creek, Y, Chase and Talkeetna.

Denali Arts Council has provided an ever-expanding range of drama, circus, music, film, writing and visual arts opportunities and events for residents as well as visitors for the past 27 years. DAC acts as the umbrella organization for six local arts groups: Denali Drama, Green Light Circus, Music Academy, Hangar Door Cinema, Talkeetna Artists Guild and The Writers Group.

To gain an idea of what happens in this dynamic organization, look at the summer of 2007: a two week youth circus camp with performances; a series of jazz workshops, partnering over 35 local musicians with professional musicians from NYC, culminating in a community concert; a Winter in July exhibition of local artists in our North Wall Gallery; a theatre production by the young people’s annual Summer Stock company; a daily film and presentation about

life in Talkeetna; a Concert series hosted by the community radio station; and a summer outdoor Alaskan artisans market.

If you find yourself in Talkeetna, you are invited to check out an event, or get involved. On the calendar for 2008 are a variety of events such as the Oceans Film Festival, a Valentines variety show, a night of opera, the annual Summer Stock youth theatre, the circus, Aladdin, jazz residency and much more. If you’d like to be on their mailing list, contact them at 907-733-7929 or [email protected].

Denali Arts Council–Diversity • Artistry • Community

I came up the Alcan in 1971 with my husband and two babies and no pampers! I thought I had come to the end of the world… Since I grew up in Canada moving every couple of years, it wasn’t long before I set about to make a life for myself through my art. I took a weaving class that fall and by 1975 was in business teaching people to spin and weave. The Spinning Room, now 33 years old is my studio on Second Avenue in Fairbanks and has expanded to several different avenues: beads, bobbin lace, metalwork, etc. The Spinning Room receives visitors from all over the world every year and the guest book is quite exciting. My own work always been affected by the beautiful surroundings in which we live. Color and light are

especially important: the misty tundra, the winter sunsets, the autumn jewels, the dancing aurora and the vibrant summer flowers. Technically, I like to focus on the interconnection

between the media with which I work. Lace has dominated in my qiviut work, beadwork and metalwork. The finest threads, the tiniest beads and the most intricate designs are what keep me intrigued. “Intimate” is the most often used description. I do love getting “lost” in a piece of beadwork.

February 2008 • Fairbanks arts association OKathe O’Malley

Kathe O’Malley started painting in Grafton, New York in 2003 after retiring from a varied career as scientist, teacher, writer and psychologist. She came to Alaska in 2004 for a seasonal job at Denali Park. In preparing for the trip north a friend introduced her, by email, to Stan, a longtime Alaskan;

after about 1000 emails, Stan flew to Boston to drive her to Alaska. The job at Denali lasted only a short while before Kathe moved to Fairbanks and married Stan.

Peggy BukenbuelPeggy Birkenbuel has been aspiring to

become an artist since childhood when her father placed paper in front of his nine kids,

scribbled lines and said: “Now draw me a picture.” She grew up in Portland, Oregon and worked for Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone in Seattle and Boeing 747. She then moved to Discovery Basin, Montana and became a ski school director. After raising three sons as a single parent and graduating from Western Montana College in Dillon, Mt. her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher came true. She then taught in the Yupik/Athabaskan village of Crooked Creek, Alaska, where she introduced art to 2nd& 3rd grade classes. Arriving in Fairbanks in 1998, she joined the Fairbanks Watercolor Society and fulfilled aspirations to create “Collage Works” and experiment with mixed-media, flowers, landscape, abstract, and collage. Peggy has shown in many First Friday venues and thoroughly enjoys volunteering at the Bear Gallery and meeting artists and tourists from various countries.

Volunteering in Fairbanks is easy – there are so many organizations and groups that need and depend upon volunteers. I have been a member of the Fairbanks Arts Association Board of Directors for about ten years. This is really a great organization with a wonderful dedicated staff they make it easy

to be a volunteer. I have been the President of the Board for 7 years. We have a board that

works well together and we compliment each other’s talents. I actually enjoy

the meetings! I currently volunteer with several other arts organizations and community groups. I consider

volunteering a great way to meet new people and be involved in activities that focus on the greater good. I

am looking forward to 2008 and the upcoming activities of the Fairbanks Arts Association.
