For Fall 2010, our third season, Enfield & Wizenty is proud to announce three new titles. all three are elegantly packaged as objects that cannot yet be replicated on a screen. We have continued to refine the look and feel of the Enfield & Wizenty
titles based on feedback from the reading and bookselling communities.
Michelle Berry, an acclaimed Peterborough author, won our inaugural $5,000 fiction prize for her novel This Book Will Not Save Your Life. riffing throughout on Dr. Spock’s famous boomer-era guide to child-rearing, Berry’s novel is a story of morbid obesity, arson, magicians and a mother-daughter-sister rivalry rife with deadly consequences. Employing an engaging and deceptively informal style, this novel is hard to put down and will stay with you after the last page.
Jeff Bursey, a debut Charlottetown novelist, has written Verbatim, a hilarious exposé of parliamentary practice in Newfoundland. Purple rhetoric, vicious insults, and prorogation are some of the methods members use to represent their constituents. Innovative in form, this satirical novel is also accessible and topical.
richard Cumyn, a veteran Kingston short story writer, has been short-listed for the relit award in consecutive years for his previous work. His new book, The Young in Their Country, is unsentimental, sometimes violent, and often funny. Stories from this collection have appeared in major Canadian literary magazines such as Prism International, The New Quarterly, Prairie Fire, Grain, and The Fiddlehead.

Too big for regular medical equipment, Sylvia Swamp is on her way to a veterinary hospital for an emergency procedure. While the ambulance workers try to keep her alive, Sylvia contem-plates her life and her place in the dysfunctional family that she both idolizes and detests.
Sylvia’s mother, ruth, is obsessed with the common sense advice in the book, Dr. Spock Baby and Child Care, but common sense is exactly what eludes her. Sister Sadie wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps as an assistant to a magician. But once Sadie dons the sequins, ruth must learn to share not only the applause but also the erotic attentions of ‘Marvellous Marvin.’ Meanwhile, the somnolent Mr. Swamp turns to TV and booze for escape. Who in this misfit family will crack first?

Verbatim: a Novel Jeff Bursey
VErBaTIM: a NoVEl IS a hilarious and scathing exposé of parliamentary practice in an unnamed atlantic province. Dirty tricks, vicious
insults, and inept parliamentary procedures are some of the methods members use to best represent their constituents.
Infighting about petty matters within the staff of the legislature is captured by Hansard—its recording division—complete with typos unique to each correspondent. But when the bureaucrats begin to emulate their political masters, the parliamentary system’s supposed dignity is further stripped away.
Jeff Bursey reveals how chaotic and mean-spirited the rules behind the game of politics are, and how political virtue corrupts everyone. Verbatim: a Novel is an inventive and blackly humorous work that speaks to the broken parliamentary practices found across the country.
aBouT THE auTHor:Jeff Bursey has worked for Hansard in Atlantic Canada for seventeen years, first as a transcriber, and then as an editor. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland and currently living in Charlottetown, PEI, Jeff has only ever lived on islands.

The Young in Their Countryand other Stories
richard Cumyn
THE YouNg oCCuPY a TErrITorY of their own, a foreign land inaccessible to nostalgia and regret. In these eloquent, arresting stories, an
assortment of exotic fledglings send tremors through the foundations of the established world.
on the fringe of the alberta tar sands, four summer students interrupt a once-famous artist’s retreat from society. a naive job seeker shakes a frustrated insurance-company employee out of selfish, middle-aged complacency. an experienced history teacher re-enacts an episode from the riel rebellion with such frightening power that it threatens his sanity and his students’ safety. a retired policeman opens a low-budget summer camp where he hopes to teach children the skills needed to survive on an increasingly dangerous planet.
unsentimental, often funny, rarely nostalgic, each story in The Young in Their Country is a complete world.
aBouT THE auTHor:richard cuMyn is the author of four previous collections of short fiction and a novella. A past fiction editor of The Anti-gonish Review, he is widely published in Canada and abroad, his work appearing regularly in The New Quarterly, The Fiddle-head, Prairie Fire, The Globe and Mail and The Literary Review of Canada, among others.
