Weight Room

• Always perform a warm-up

• If you are unsure of how to perform a lift or use a machine- ASK how to before doing it.

• Start with light weight- increase weight once you have the proper from and technique

• Put dumbbells and weights back after you are done using them

While in the Weight Room…

• Why is a warm-up necessary?• Increase blood flow, increase temperature of muscles, brings oxygen to your muscles, prevent injury…

• What should your warm-up INCLUDE?

• What types of warm-ups have you done?? • Dynamic Flex/Stretching • Plyometrics• Static Stretching• Passive Stretching

Warm-Up

PROPER HYGIENEWhile in the weight room:

• WASH hands with SOAP/WATER before and after using the equipment

• Clean the equipment after using it*Sanitary spray/ Paper towels –OR- disinfectant wipes

• Clothing that is used in the weight room or on a consistent basis should be cleaned regularly

*T-shirts, socks & undergarments – Daily basis

**Helps to prevent spread of germs and bacteria to avoid spread of illness/diseases **

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

• First discovered in 1961 & constantly adapting

• “Staph bacteria” nicknamed “SUPER BUG”

*resistant to penicillin & some common antibiotics

-methicillin, amoxicillin, penicillin, oxacillin and many other antibiotics

*Some cases can be LIFE THREATENING while other cases are not serious infections

What is MRSA???

• Many healthy people carry staph without being infected by it

• 25-30% of people have staph bacteria in their noses

• Becomes an issue once it enters the body, typically through a cut infection

• Many cases of staph can be treated with antibiotics however certain strains of staph, such as MRSA are resistant to antibiotics

• MRSA causes more than 60% of staph infections

*Infections/wounds may look like:• spider bites• infected turf burns•Boils•abscesses

Signs/ Symptoms

• AVOID CONTACT

• Touching the infection/drainage or surfaces that have come in contact with the infection/drainage

• MRSA bacteria can stay on surfaces for WEEKS

Transmission

Frequent hand washing Proper hygiene

• Showering after workouts•Do not share persona hygiene items•Do not participate with an infected skin wound/lesion

Healthy environment • Cleaning equipment- machines• Cleaning surfaces- benches, floor, mats

Prevention

REPORT any potential skin infections-nurse/teacher/coach

Open wounds should be covered with a clean, dry bandage

Do not participate in CONTACT SPORTS/ACTIVITIES if you have a potentially contagious wounds

Refer to medical provider for further treatment
