Advanced Certificate in Education: HIV/AIDS in Teaching
This programme was submitted to the DoE Higher Education Branch for PQM approval and was approved(notice received from the DoE on 26 March 2004).

Advanced Certificate in Education: HIV/AIDS in Teaching
Purpose of the qualification
The purpose of this Advanced Certificate in Education is to respond to the needthat exists in the school context andthat is also expressed by teachers during visits to schools and telephone calls. The clear strategic importance of thisprogr:rmme is thus evident.
Teachers need specialized knowledge to address the HIViAIDS crisis in the country through teaching seeing that thepandemic has reached major proportions and has major implications for schools and education at large. By means ofthis program the Faculty of Education at the University of Port Elizabeth wants to provide teachers with practical,but high quality specialised training and a better understanding of the problern. This should enable thern to handlethe very different kind of crisis situation in the classroom they are now facing because of the HIV/AIDS challenge.Through their knowledge, skills and attitudes they could play an important role in HIV/AIDS Teaching. It willenable them to fulftl the following educator roles:Learning medialor: the teachers will be able to facilitate learning in HIV/AIDS issues in a culturally sensitivemanner and create learning environment conducive to the acquisition of the knanledge, sHIIs, attitudes and valuesto deal with AIDS/HIV issues and to integrate these into other learning areas'Interpreter and designer ol learning programs and materials: the teachers will be empowered to fusigncontextualised learning programmes and appropriate teaching and learning resourcesfor the teaching of HIY/AIDS].'JUE,S,'
Lifelong lesrner and reseorcher: the teachers will be empowered to conduct research and epidemiological surneysin their school communities andwill achieve academic, personal and professional growth through the attainment ofthe ACE HAT.Leader, administrator and manager: the teachers will be able to take the lead tn their school commwities to dealuith HIV/Aids issuesCorununity, citizenship and pastoral rol.e: the teachers will acquire the competencies to involve the widercommunity in education and preveruion of HIV/AIDS and related,,sriles.Assessor: the teachers will be enabled to design learning programmes and assessment tools related to the teachingof HIV/AIDSLearning area/subject speclallst: the teachers will be well grounded in the larcwledge, skills, attitudes, values,methods and procedures required to ffictively inegrate HIViAIDS related isszes into all learning areas and be ableto adapt these to varying contexts.
It is also aimed at the self-protection for educators, their own families and their communities in South Africa.
Furthermore, the Faculty wants to confribute to the Higher Education HMAIDS Prograrnme through the writing anddeveloping academic curricula on HIY/AIDS for teacher education, as initiated by SAUVCA,

Candidates must currently be t practising leacher and in possession of- A professional teacher qualification at NQF level 5- Two (2) years' teaching experience.

Policy and procedure in recognition of prior learning
Candidates may gain entrance to the qualification through the recognition of prior learning. RPL will beconducted in accordance with the SAQA policy.
5. Exit level outcomes and applied and lntegnted teachlng comrytenceBy the end of the ptogramme, in-service educator students will be able to:
5.1.1 Practicel Competencies:
employ appropriate teaching skills and wnvey inforrned advice to learners and members of theircommunity regarding all the HIV/AIDS-related topics dealt with in the different modules;
5.1.2 FoundationalCompetencies:display a theoretical understanding of HIV/AIDS related concepts and the sociological, psychological,historical political and economic implications of the pandemic and be able to explain, analyse and utilisethese specialised knowledge, skills and values to educate learners and the wider comrnunity
5.1.3 ReflexiveCompetencies:integrate the knowledge, skills and values regarding the teaching of HIV/Aids and related issues into otherlearning areas in a culturally and environmentally sensitive manner; reflect on ways that social, culturaland psychological barriers to the teaching and learning of HIV/Aids can be overcome
5,1.4 Crit icalcross-f ieldoutcomes:
participate as citizens in social life and to contribute to the well-being of their leamers, colleagues,parents and communities affected or infected with HIV/AIDS through strategies such as role play, micro-teaching, co-facilitation at community workshops by students;
display effective problem solving skills by developing stategies to overcome the barriers to teachingHIV/Aids and related issues;
work effectively as a member of a team through group work sessions, group presentation of assignmurts;
display effective information management skills through the presentation of assignments and thecompil ation of portfolios;
demonstra0e a systemic understanding of the social, legal, economic, political and psychologicalimplications of HIV/AIDS through the completion of assignments;
show cultural sensitivity through the design of context appropriate teaching material urd methods;
cornmunicate effectively about legal, cultural, ethical, sexual and medical issues related to HIV / AIDSthrough preparing coherent written assignments, co-presenting workshops and micro-teaching,

7. Applied and integrafed assessmentln-service educator students will be required to display that they have mastered the practical competencies associatedwith the individual rnodules through micro-teaching and the draft.ing of a learning unit for relevant school grades;their mastery of the foundational competencies will be demonstrated through the completion of assignments andexams; their reflective cornpetencies will be dernonstrated through the compilation of a portfolio which will giveevidence of their ability to reflect on and adapt teaching practices
Integrated assessrnent will take place to ensure that the purpose of the qualification is achieved. The range offorrnative and surnmative assessment of modules will include continuous assessment of the rnodules by means of
, pomfolios, preparation and application activities, practical work and reflections.
One two hour written examination will also take place at tbe end of each semester, covering the 2 rnodules presentedduring that sernester, The portfolio will account for 50% ofthe final mark.
ln the case of the 2 practical modules (one per year (Modules 5 & l0) there will be no written examination.

The prograrnme provides access to fuither study in Education at NQF level 7.

Quality assuranoe mechanismsInternal and external assessment and consultation took place during the design, and will continue during irnplernentationand assessment of the program, including other Departments at UPE, other Tertiary Institutions in South Africa, theDepartment of Education, Department of Health, HIV/AIDS-Units and students.
10. Mode of delivery of the programme
Starting in 2006 with a pilot project, through block releasing mode.
Will be presented on an NMMU campus.Interactive resource-based learning material and study guides.Built in self-directed learning and practical application.
