Editorial

PhilipeHaydonChief Executive Officer The Himalaya Drug Company

Dear students,

Ayurveda has been gaining recognition and huge popularity in India and across the world, especially in the recent years. Education, research, and clinical practice in ayurvedic medicine is most authentic in our country. It is really important for us to maintain the popularity and authenticity of this holistic form of medicine, in future too. This creates the necessity to groom and guide Ayurveda students across India to become bright and intelligent doctors and practitioners, who can advocate this form of medicine, and take it to the world.

In this context, Ayurwhiz is one of the platforms, which we have initiated to strengthen you—the doctors of tomorrow, and inspire you to apply your knowledge to bring good health to people around the world. Ayurwhiz has been aiming at grooming you all to be better doctors, enhancing your knowledge bank about Ayurveda, and facilitating to connect with the herbal industry. It also serves as a platform for the entire student community of Ayurveda from different parts of the country to meet, interact, exchange ideas, and share knowledge with one another.

My best wishes to the entire ayurvedic student community across India for being a part of this wonderful event and making it a grand success! Once again, heartiest congratulations to the winners of Ayurwhiz-2!

SexualDysfunctioninMen• Sexual dysfunction in men may have physiological causes, psychological causes, or a

combination of both.1

• Sexual dysfunction in men could be due to erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation, and loss of sexual interest.

• Most men experience difficulties in achieving an erection at some time in their lives and 10% have continued erection problems, which affects their personal lives. As men get older, ED becomes more common. By the age of 65 years, almost 25% of men experience this problem at least once out of every 4 sexual acts.

• A lot of men sometimes ejaculate sooner than they would like. Estimates vary, but around 1 out of 3 men experience premature ejaculation at some time in their lives.2

ashvagandhaLatinname: Withania somnifera

Englishname: Winter cherry

Withania somnifera is a woody shrub found in India and the Mediterranean

region. The active chemical constituents of the herb are saponins and withanolides.1

Studies have indicated that W somnifera possesses several medicinal properties including antistress and antioxidant activities. It is an ingredient in many formulations prescribed for stress-related conditions.2 Ayurvedic classical texts and clinical studies describe W somnifera as a safe and effective adaptogen, a herb that helps combat stress. Various trials conducted in the past on W somnifera exhibited positive results for its adaptogenic and stress-reducing activities.

Recently, a single-centered, placebo-controlled trial concluded that W somnifera root helps reduce stress and anxiety and thereby improves general wellbeing under stress. The findings of this study suggest that W somnifera root extract safely and effectively improves an individual’s resistance toward stress and hence the self-assessed quality of life. Thus, it can be used as an adaptogen in treating adults who are under stress.3

tulasiLatinname: Ocimum sanctum

Englishname: Holy basil

Ocimum sanctum is a much branched subshrub with hairy stems. Owing to their

diverse healing properties O sanctum extracts are used in ayurvedic remedies for common colds, headaches, respiratory disorders, and inflammation. Traditionally, O sanctum is taken in many forms—herbal tea, dried powder, fresh leaf.1

Several ancient systems of medicine advocate the therapeutic applications of O sanctum for asthma and bronchitis.2 Traditional systems of medicine recommend different parts of O sanctum in the treatment of conditions such as bronchitis and bronchial asthma.3

The volatile oil present in the leaves of O sanctum contains eugenol and linalool.1 Eugenol has been found to be largely responsible for the therapeutic potential of this herb.3

Several clinical studies have established the positive link between O sanctum and respiratory tract infections.4
