Cliff MCNishThis week, Cliff McNish, award winning writer of children’s fiction, joined the English depart-ment to deliver a creative writing workshop to every boy in the Junior School. With a fo-cus on creating a credible fantasy, realistic characters and believable plotlines, Cliff has shown us a way of story planning that is pre-cise, succinct and, to the boys’ delight, does not require much writing! As well as joining lessons, Cliff has been enjoying the company of enthusiastic young novelists in the library at lunchtime and on Tuesday he met the Up-per Remove book club and participated in the discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird. He also gave a talk to parents on Wednesday evening, giving them some insight into what has been going on at school this week and signing cop-ies of his books. It has been a wonderfully in-spiring week with Cliff; we would like to thank him for his time and energies and we look forward to welcoming him back to KCJS very soon.

Transition boys all visited The Nation-al Archives last week as part of their ‘What is History?’ topic. Many boys in Transition originally thought that we learn the most about history from objects we find hidden in the ground. The National Archives showed them that this is definitely not the case. The documents it stores have been pur-posely stored and the boys were fas-cinated to discover the methods his-torians use to keep them safe. We all learnt a lot and the boys would all be very keen to return with their families at some point.

On Monday 9 October the Wimbledon Bookfest welcomed Tracey Chevalier to present the prizes to the winners and run-ners up in the Young Writers’ Competition 2017. This year the theme was ‘Outsiders’ and short stories and poems covered those marginalised and facing discrimination or exclusion. Al-though a weighty subject, the entries struck a positive note and the overwhelming conclusion was that accepting and under-standing difference could be a unifying force. Tracey Chevalier spoke about her own experience of writing and of intolerance. She has written eight historical adult books and recently published ‘New Boy’, which is a book for young adults based on ‘Othello’. Set in a playground in 1974, the action takes place in a single day. Her messages on fitting in and the nature of friendships will hit home with many of us.After collecting a prize for winning the KS3 category (with a poem on Charles Darwin), I was lucky enough to meet Tracey Chevalier and also to receive a goody bag packed with books. It was particularly good to find Matt Dickinson’s ‘North Face’ in the bag as he had entertained us all at King’s just a couple of weeks ago. The entries of the winners, runners up and those highly commended are published in a collection being sold by Waterstones. It is great to see pieces by Romee, Lev, Thomas and Tait highly commended in there too.

Harry competed in the Southern Region Biathlon (800m run/50m swim) Championships on Saturday and managed to secure a bronze medal. He finished in the top 3 which means that he has automatically qualified for the British Champion-ships at Crystal Palace next March and the British Schools Champion-ships in Birmingham in November, which actually falls on his birthday!

f r o M t h e t o u C h l i N eIn our final week of sport for the half-term, all the U10 football teams travelled to Cranmore for A-G matches and, after the U11s found the going tough in the week before, I am happy to report that the Second Form boys played tremendously well to secure the lion’s share of the victories this time out. Target-setting is a way in which the staff try to get the boys to focus on their performance to get a positive result and, certainly in the Es, we looked at being unselfish and holding positional sense, which resulted in a fine victory. All of the U8s and U9s were out in force against Donhead and Shrewsbury House respectively and, across the board, there were some fantastically close battles with all boys playing with wide smiles across their faces. We also welcomed our friends at Wimbledon Common Prep School on Monday morning to play football against our boys in Transition and it was great to hear reports of both how competitive the fixtures were, but also of the standard of the ‘Squirrels’ boys – the coaching of Mr Morrison and his colleagues has certainly been working wonders with their Year 2s! Tuesday afternoon saw Cumnor House as opposition to our U11s, which gave the perfect example of how we desperately try our best to match up fixtures so that they are evenly contested with opposition schools, and often that we are the school that will play down a team if necessary. The afternoon looked like this: KCS Cumnor HouseB vs AC vs BE vs CF vs DG vs E Our boys will learn not a great deal from a 10-0 thrashing of their opponents, which will not set them up for the close tussles they will have in the Senior School. I am delighted to say that King’s were up in the majority of these particular fixtures and a special mention has to go to Mr Hortin’s C team who ran out 5-1 winners against the Cumnor House B team. It was Surrey Rugby Festival season for the U12As as we journeyed to Guildford on Monday morning. With 5 matches played, the overall feeling was that, after a tired start to proceedings, the boys made every effort to improve with each game, finishing with a well-earned win against The Cedars School. The main target moving forward for this squad and every squad in the Junior School is to consistently work on the ‘bread and butter’ by which I mean the fundamentals of the sport: passing and catching. The ability to pass off both hands and catch a ball, without hav-ing to cradle it in your arms and chest, are paramount to being an excellent rugby player and the earlier you learn these skills the better your chances are at succeeding in the sport. The U13ABD teams played Reigate Grammar School on Tuesday afternoon with both A and B claiming wins that have reflected their excellent attitude in Games sessions. The U12A and B teams took on local school Rutlish and, in two bruising encounters, the boys learnt a lot about tackling technique and maintained their style of play throughout to gain the two victories. This week’s podcast is an Ashes Special with Mr Gibson and Mr Scott – Mr McAuslan wants me to confirm that he is a thoroughbred Kiwi!

Word of the week:effable – able to be described in words

From the Latin effabilis (= “something which can be spoken”) which itself comes from the word effari (= “to say”).

Johnny feared the worst when his teacher announced that the quality of his homework was ef-fable, and the distinction came as a welcome relief.
