I Work Party (8/20/2017)We had a great Work Party last month. 52 Members and Guests stepped up to the plate and helped out. The weather was pleasant and we got a lot of work done and finished up with a great lunch and a fun raffle. Again, we did a lot more than just rake broken clay targets from the hill. We

worked hard to prepare for the upcoming fire season. We cleared out lots of weeds and brush and cut down a couple of dead trees. We also painted the Trap Houses, added more sand to the berms on the Pistol Range and a bunch of other tasks that just needed to be done. I want take this opportunity to thank all of the participants by name here so that we all know who pitched in. If your name is misspelled, please write more neatly on the green sheet next time.Ed Migdal, Ron Bock, Norm Porst, Tony Penzich, Chris Cote, Fred Slikker ,Hank Beck, Robert K Tucker, David Bowers, Harold Riggs, Bruce Darrow, Ken Frattini, Greg Lanfofran, JW Bailey, Bryan Fichler, Tim Geiser, Mike Marks, Julie Reed Marks, Ed Govoni, Thomas Mackay, Jerry Strauss, Gerard Charest, Stan Wickliffe, Greg Cunningham, Aidan Sheeny, Andrew Parker, Craig Rogers, James Mc Giuntini, Neil Pisk, Patrick Russ, Darrin Eaton, Sabrina Elliott, Charles Elliott, Paul Varesio, Geoff Orchin, Breen Emory, Elonco Clark, Mike Renwick, Dillion Renwick, Jay Rivers, Mike Carroll, Gary Robertson, Joanne Anderson, Jack Bryson, Laura "Scotti" Clary, Pamela A Tucker, Smitty N.M., Jim Mainquist, Rich Lippucci, Patrick "Sasquatch" Watson, Mike Hall, Cynthia Hall

I Make Time to Attend a General MeetingBring a friend to the next General Meeting and one or both of you could win a few bucks. At the last General Meeting L.T. Reynolds won the $25 door prize. Had he attended the meeting, Joe Stencel would have won the $500 Attendance Prize. Ray Bucholz also awarded prizes from the Guns & Roses drawing to Leonard Hodges and ‘Smoldering Bud Smith. The next General Meeting is 9/14/2017. If you don’t show up, you can’t win.

I Veteran In NeedWhile I was at the Work Party, a member (Joanne) came to me asked me to mention a friend of hers in the newsletter. He is a veteran in need of housing close to public transit so that he can get to work. He is a quiet and clean individual who could use a hand. Please call 760-741-5654 and leave a message if you think that you can help out in any way.

I High Power Rifle Shoot (9/9/2017)Come join us for this competitive and fun shoot starting at 8:00 AM. Early arrival is recommended. Any sights are allowed. Any centerfire caliber is allowed. The event consists of 4-position shooting. There will be unlimited practice rounds and then then 10 rounds per position for score. One hour is the total time allowed. Members pay $5 and non-members pay $10. For more information, contact Paul Hendrikson at 760-522-4660.

I NRA Metallic Reloading Class (10/1/2017)Although ammunition has plentifully come back to the market there are restrictions that are being generated to hinder such purchases. The opportunity to learn reloading techniques that will allow you to produce timely, consistent, accurate ammunition while receiving NRA certified reloading instruction is available. The First Part is strictly academic in structure and conducted at the EF&GA meeting hall. This session, is on Sunday, Oct 1st, 2017 and will run from 8:00 – 12:00.The Second Part is a “Hands On” reloading bench experience. This session generates the practical, detailed experience necessary while you successfully complete a number of your personal reloads. Scheduling the second session will be at a mutually agreed to time and date. This scheduling will be completed at the 1st session. The cost is two tiered: EF&GA members = $100; non-members = $110. For those individuals beginning and are without any reloading supplies (empty cases, powder, primers, etc.) a $10 surcharge will be applied. Prior registration and a $20 deposit is required to secure a place in this class.Registration is necessary and limited. For more information, contact Elvio Marchi at [email protected] or 760-734-3942

I Coaches Course (10/15/2017)We will be conducting a Coaches Course where we will teach you how to coach. We are always looking for more coaches to help out at the Jr. events (Jr. Rifle, Pistol, and Archery). Come on out and learn something new or be

It has been about fifty years since I took my discharge in California. I

liked it here and the politics seemed reasonable. Over time something

happened especially when it comes to 2nd Amendment issues and it is about to

get worse when it comes to buying ammunition. Without discussing it all in the depth

that I would like to, just be aware that if you only keep a box or two of ammo at home

it might be a good idea to consider increasing the amount to the greatest extent you

can afford!

While doing some target practice on the pistol range I was reminded by Elvio Marchi that

just shooting at a paper target does not really do all that much good when practicing for self-

defense. My own experience says that shooting at another person is actually a difficult thing

to do at best. As a sign in my old football locker room used to say; “YOU WILL PLAY LIKE

YOU PRACTICE”. At first, I thought that was crazy, surely I would play harder during a game,

but in the end I found that the coach and his sign were right. It also holds true when one

learns defensive firearm shooting.

Obviously you cannot practice a shootout with your friends. It would not tend to end up

well. However, you can look into some of the competition events such as NIDPA conducted

by Norm Porst or Combat Shoot conducted by Brian Lamb. I think that the Cowboy shoot

run by Jay Zimmett would be another fantastic way to shoot hard, fast and learn where your

weaknesses are. Correcting those weaknesses before they cost you your life might just be an

important consideration. Practicing is close to the real thing and is not really a bad thing.

You will quickly find out that just shooting at a nice quiet paper target doesn’t prepare you

nearly as much as you might think.

When on the pistol range or any range for that matter, remember to keep that muzzle in a safe

direction and do not “sweep” the line. It should never happen, but it does all too often. If you

have broken the rule and someone calls you on it, the best thing to do is to apologize and

don’t ever let it happen again. Getting into an argument over it could get you removed from

the range. Arguing could even get you a revoked membership. This is a safety consideration

that we do not take lightly. Quite frankly, I see no reason why anyone would think it a

frivolous thing to do.

reminded of something you forgot. These classes can also be use by Women on Target coaches as well. Please email Ren Everett at [email protected] to let him know you will be there.

I New Shoot Chair NeededBy Kevin MillerAfter serving as the Shoot chairman for National Match Course Rifle Match for over a decade, I am planning to relinquish my position after October, 2017. This is one of the oldest organized matches run at the Escondido Fish and Game Association, having been run continuously for over 40 years. It has been my privilege to serve as the Shoot Chairman for this match, but with my impending retirement and a plan to move out of California, I will no longer have the time to run the match. I need someone to step up and take over the responsibilities of running the match. If anyone is interested in doing so, please call me and we can discuss the job requirements. If no one is interested in doing so, this match will go away after October 2017.

I LAX Ammo in San DiegoIn a visit to the newly opened LAX Ammo, in San Diego. Board member Norm Porst was able to procure a deal for EF&GA members. If you show your association membership card you will receive between five and seven percent off any LAX Ammo brand ammo. LAX Ammo is a major player in the ammo world. Their main store and range is by LAX airport. They have their own brand of new and reloaded ammo plus all the other name brands. The more members that use them for their ammo needs, the better chance of getting larger discounts. They are located off Hwy 163 & Balboa Blvd. at 4411 Mercury St., Ste 103, San Diego, CA 92111

How to place a classified ad

in the newsletter Please help to keep the classified section easy to read and well organized. There is no cost as long as you are an EF&GA member in good standing. Classified ads run for ONE newsletter (one month). If you want to repeat an ad for another month (with price adjustments, etc…) simply re-submit the ad request via e-mail.

Please submit requests for classified ads via email to [email protected] and be sure to double-check for spelling and grammar errors.

It may sound obvious but requests for classifieds are frequently received with not enough information to be useful to a reader. There are 5 main components of a classified ad:

Category – Most classifieds fall into one of 3 catego-ries, ‘For Sale’, ‘Wanted’, or ‘Lost & Found’.

Subject/Title – This will appear in bold in the advertise-ment. This should be short (2 or 3 words) and concise.

Description – This is the body of the advertisement and can be a few sentences but not more than a paragraph. Abbreviations appear cryptic and are not recommend-ed unless they are well known acronyms.

Price – A specific dollar amount as well as qualifiers give the reader important information. For example, “$600 or Best Offer, Buyer pays DROS, Will consider trades”

Contact Info – This should be a name AND a phone number (including area code) and/or an e-mail address.

2nd Annual Inter-Service and Junior Marksmanship Working Party (10/1/2017)Escondido Fish and Game will be holding our 2nd Annual Inter-Service and Junior Marksmanship Working Party on October 1st, 2017. This is another great opportunity to show the folks at Escondido Fish and Game that we appreciate everything that they do for the Junior programs. The event starts at 12:00 and goes until sundown. Everyone is welcome. New Members, this would be a great chance to take care of some of your volunteer hours. For the rest of us, this is a great chance to support an amazing program. Let’s show the Escondido Fish and Game Association how much we appreciate everything that they do for the next generation of shooters. Any questions, contact Patrick Russ or Darrin Eaton.A Job Well DoneThe Junior Marksmanship Program would like to thank Ken Halbert for his hard work on the newly restored “Mom’s Creek” sign. Ken saw that the sign was old and in need of some serious TLC. In just one week he was able to completely refurbish the sign. Thanks Ken!!! He also happens to be the Grandfather of one of our top Junior shooters. Miss Daysha Halbert has come a long way in the last few years.

July Contest: We had a good turnout for Pistol and Revolver. In fact it was the best turnout we have seen in several years. This is kind of a good news/bad news thing. With less than 10 shooters, we can shoot a complete relay of three targets, without re-setting the targets. With more than ten shooters, we have to reset after each target, and that takes time. For that reason, in the future, we will be starting the Pistol/Revolver contest at 08:30. Please congratulate Ray Bucholz for this Pistol/Revolver popularity. If he hadn’t been promoting and providing awards for the revolver portion of the contest, all of you would not be showing up to shoot, in what is becoming, a very competitive BP class. Rifle will start at 10:00, or as soon thereafter, when the pistol/revolver contest ends.

Next Contest: September is our next Super Short Range Contest. Targets will be at 25, 50 and 75 yards. This is designed to give our entry level shooters a low pressure opportunity to participate and shoot steel. This Super Short Range contest is also open to those of you that shoot Trade Guns, (Replicas of smooth bore flintlocks traded to Native Americans during the fur trade era). Get out and do some practicing now.October is our normal Short Range contest, with targets from 50 to 100 yards.

November will be an ACROSS THE COURSE event. Plan on three targets each, every 25 yards from the 25 to 150 yard line. Time, and our board permitting, we may have a pumpkin shoot following. Note that there will be NO pistol contest in November. The Rifle contest will start at 09:00 and continue until completed. Set up and Take Down help would be appreciated.

Lame Turkey news: I went out on August 23rd for some body and fender work on my left knee. Ren Everett will cover/did cover the August contest. I hope to be back to shooting again by mid September.I will need some help with set-up for the September contest so come on out and help an old broke down wannabe Mountain Man. I’ll be there too.....

Thank you,

Garth Warner

InterClub Results (8/26/2017)Normally at an InterClub Shoot we will have around 40 to 45 people and we are usually done at around 2 or 3-ish in the afternoon. This year we had 61 shooters and we all had a great time and we didn’t finish the InterClub shoot until almost 5:00 PM. First of all I want to thank the Pot Shooters for being so patient. They were very gracious and cooperative while we finished our handicap rounds causing a delay in the start of the Pot Shoot. I had a lot of help from a lot of volunteers but I especially want to recognize Tim Hoy and Chris Cote. Both of them made the event run as smooth as possible with minimal down time during the event. We also had lots of help from members scoring and filling the trap machines. Without lots of help from volunteers, none of this would have worked or been any fun.Major Market provided sandwiches for lunch and it was excellent food (as usual). As I stated before, we were expecting 40ish people and ended up with 61. I called them in the morning and they had our order ready on-time and on-target with top quality sandwiches. The top shooter was Jim Crayton from Vado Del Rio winning by one target with a 97. The top Woman was Ping Ping Tian from Vado Del Rio with an 84. The top Junior was our own Isaac Smith with an 83. The Overall Club winner was Vado Del Rio with a score of 97.2%. Congratulations to all who participated.

5th Saturday Fun Shoot (9/30/2017)There will be a Fun Shoot at the end of the month and it is bound to be a great time. There will be a round of Singles, Doubles, and Wobble Singles. Then while we are having lunch, we will calculate the handicap squads and top it off with a round of Handicap Singles. If you want to be on a squad with your friends, get there early and sign up together. For more information contact Darrin Eaton at [email protected]
