  • 6WELCOME BY PATRICK HICKEYPRESIDENT OF THE EOC

    Rome, 12th June 2013

    Dear Friends from Utrecht,

As you know, the European Youth Olympic Festival is not just a sports event but also an occasion for the youth of Europe to meet and get to know each other and understand the importance of the values that are embodied in the Olympic spirit, including fair play, peace, friendship, and the rejection of all forms of discrimination.

But we should not forget another aspect of what sport teaches. Thanks to sport, young people learn how it is possible to triumph over adversity, to challenge and then change their circumstances and to achieve great things. Sport, like nothing else, empowers people. It has the potential to inspire and motivate, since it shines a light on what people can do, rather than what they cannot do. No one better expressed this concept than Lord Sebastian Coe when he said, Sport is about what you can do, what you can over-come, the barriers and attitudes you can break, that the human spirit is stronger than steel and far more resilient than many thought possible.

All this is what the EYOF stands for and it is this precious legacy that we entrust to the city of Utrecht, a city at the heart of Europe and with a very European heart, and to the National Olympic Committee of the Netherlands, in the knowledge that it is in the best of hands, and with this I do not just mean their leaders, but also the many nameless people that have laboured hard and with passion for years so that this event may be a success, those wonderful anonymous people who have done their utmost to ensure that the 2013 Summer EYOF will be another outstanding success, for the youth of Europe fi rst and foremost, for the Olympic Movement of Europe, and for the whole of our Continent.

    With best wishes,

Patrick HickeyPresident of the EOCPatrick HickeyPresident of the EOC

  • 7WELCOME BY ALEID WOLFSENMAYOR OF UTRECHT

    Dear visitors,

Among todays cyclic sports events, the Olympic Games stand out. Cities show themselves in their Sunday best. Not only the worlds top sportsmen and -women, but also large groups of fans and other sports enthusiasts fl ood the city - seizing the opportunity to explore its beauties and possibilities. London 2012, Beijing 2008, Athens 2004, Sydney 2000 - there are many people cherishing memories of their visit and of the ceremonies and sports events they attended. Millions witnessed them from behind their television screen.

The European Youth Olympic Festival offers - in a manner of speaking - the Olympic Games in a nutshell. The EYOF 2013, here in Utrecht, guarantees unforgettable sports experiences, too. About 2,300 young sportsmen and -women test their skills in 9 sports. Here, you may discover the future Epke Zonderland, Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Marijke Vos, or Edith Bosch. Anyone liking spectacular opening and closing ceremonies, will certainly come into his of her own on July 14th (opening) and 19th (closing).

Besides, this week enables you, in between the many sports highlights (summarized in this guide), to explore our beautiful city, in 2013 celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Peace of Utrecht. Like the EYOF, the 1713 peace negotiations drew representatives of about 50 European countries to our city. Like these diplomats, the EYOF contestants will test their skills in a peaceful manner, adding colour, dynamism and a cultural impulse to our local society.I heartily invite you to enjoy the EYOF 2013 - but also to yield to the temptation of strolling along our canals and wharves, of some really decent shopping, of having a drink in an outdoor caf, of visiting one of our excellent museums, of climbing our one and only Dom Tower - in brief: of experiencing the city of Utrecht.

    Please be welcome!

  • 8WELCOME BY RINDA DEN BESTEN CHAIR OF THE LOCAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE

    Dear sports friends,

It is a great privilege to welcome you to the European Youth Olympic Festival 2013 in Utrecht. Needless to say, this event is about talent and sports. In the coming days we hope to see the Olympic champions of the future at work. The city of Utrecht is prepared to be centre stage to the best international sports has to offer in this age category. However, the EYOF is about so much more than just sporting achievements.

EYOF Utrecht 2013 also allows us to emphasize how important exercise and physical wellbeing is for children. Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but when done together it can also be great fun. And what better occasion to show this than here in Utrecht during an Olympic event. We want to make sure that during EYOF Utrecht 2013 Utrecht is a place where the Olympic values excellence, respect and friendship can easily be found. Please help us reach that goal!

2013 is especially an important year for Utrecht, as it marks the 300th anniversary of the signing of the treaty of Utrecht, marking the end of a period of wars in Europe. Just as at that time, people have come from all over Europe, united by the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

So visit Utrecht often this week and enjoy the sports and the city. Help us make EYOF Utrecht 2013 an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. And who knows, maybe we will meet at one of the nine venues!

    High Five!

  • 9WELCOME BY PIETER VAN DEN HOOGENBANDTOURNAMENT DIRECTOR OF EYOF UTRECHT 2013

    Dear all,

As tournament director of EYOF 2013 it is with great pride and honor that I welcome you all at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2013 in Utrecht. From 14 until 19 July 2,300 young talents will have the unique opportunity to compete against the best in their age category in a true Olympic event. Their goal will be to win a medal, but EYOF represents more than just silverware. These talents will not only thrive to be the best in their discipline, they will learn about the true value of sports and the Olympic spirit.

I have been lucky enough to compete in the EYOF myself in 1993 in the Dutch city Valkenswaard. There I caught what I like to call the Olympic Virus and it has been with me ever since. What I experienced in Valkens-waard inspired me to keep pushing myself to greater heights in swimming. That indescribable feeling is what I wish for all competitors in EYOF Utrecht 2013.

Me and my team have been working hard to make EYOF Utrecht 2013 a success. It is a big responsibility, but foremost a great pleasure to organise a festival that will be remembered for its great spirit and sporting achieve-ments by everyone involved. I am confi dent we will succeed.

I hope to see you all in Utrecht!

The Dutch landscape is dominated by water. Three big European rivers (Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt) make their way to the North sea through the Netherlands and create an important delta.

The Netherlands is known as a politically stable country with a sound financial policy. The Netherlands is one of the most open economies in the world and is among the worlds top 5 exporters.

With a population of over 16.5 million across a surface of 41,500 km2 and a population density of 488 people per km2, the Netherlands is the most densely popula ted country of the European Union. Amsterdam is the capital and the Government resides in The Hague. Over 40% of the total population lives in the Randstad, the agglo meration of the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht.

    SHORT INFORMATION ABOUT THE NETHERLANDS

ORANGE IS THE NAME OF THE DUTCH ROYAL FAMILY AND REPRESENTS THE NATIONAL IDENTITY OF THE NETHERLANDS

Main sports in the Netherlands are football, field hockey, tennis, cycling, swimming and speed skating. Dutch football and speed skating, in particular, enjoy a worldwide reputation.

Orange is the name of the Dutch Royal Family and represents the national identity of the Netherlands, which is why Dutch fans dress up in orange. During certain sporting events the whole country turns orange and people become infected by what we refer to as orange fever.

The Dutch are creative, open minded and pragmatic. They are also rather direct, honest and open in their dealings with others. The official language is Dutch, but most people speak English and possibly some other languages.

During the Opening Ceremony the Olympic Anthem will be played, just like during the ceremonies of the Olympic Games.OlympicAnthem

Olympian flame immortal Whose beacon lights our way Emblaze our hearts with the fires of hope On this momentous day As now we come across the world To share these Games of old Let all the flags of every land In brotherhood unfold Sing out each nation, voices strong Rise up in harmony All hail our brave Olympians With strains of victory Olympic light burn on and on Oer seas and mountains and plains Unite, inspire, bring honor To these ascending games

May valor reign victorious Along the path of golden way As tomorrows new champions now come forth Rising to the fervent spirit of the game Let splendour pervade each noble deed Crowned with glory and fame And let fraternity and fellowship Surround the soul of every nation Oh flame, eternal in your firmament so bright Illuminate us with your everlasting light That grace and beauty and magnificence Shine like the sun Blazing above Bestow on us your honor, truth and love

    Official EYOF Utrecht 2013 song

You will also hear Gold. This song, written by Charmplay, won a competition to become the official song of the festival. The members of the band are all students or recent graduates of the Dutch Pop Academy. Tournament Director Pieter van den Hoogenband:

The theme of EYOF Utrecht 2013 is Celebrate Talent. Young talents are discovered and offered the chance to shine. Thats why we also chose to give young talent the stage when it comes to our music choice. Im very proud of the song Gold!

    Gold

Long ago, this is where I started. To keep the dream alive, to keep the dream alive. I have walked this road in one direction, To bathe in a light of glory and be the next big story. I sit down for a little while, I take a deep breath and reach out for the sky. I will go faster than a lighting strike will hit the ground. Ive been gone, chasing for the gold and nothings gonna stop me now. Long ago, this is where we parted. We meet again in time, we compete again in time. Well be among the gold, but one will wear it. He will be a revelation and be the next sensation. I look down for the final time, I take a deep breath and reach out for the sky.

I will go faster than the lighting strike will hit the ground. Ive been gone, chasing for the gold and nothings gonna stop me now.
