I. Applicable Standards:

The products described in this report were evaluated for compliance with the SIXNET Temperature

Certification Procedure. The specifications in the SIXNET procedure exceed the temperature

requirements in European Standard EN 60950-1, "Safety of Information Technology Equipment,

Including Electrical Business Equipment (1997)." A copy of this procedure is available from

SIXNET upon request.

II. Unit Tested:

The SIXNET ET-GT-5ES-1 is a five-port Ethernet switch, the ET-GT-3ES-2SC is a three-port

Ethernet switch with a fiber-optic connection, and the ET-GT-9ES-2SC is a nine-port Ethernet

switch with a fiber-optic connection. The switches use 24 VDC and have front-panel LED

indicators. They are DIN-rail mounted and accessed remotely by a personal computer via an RJ45

interface. The switches consist of the interface electronics, the metal and plastic enclosures, and

the input power circuit. The units tested are representative of the four SIXNET Ethernet integrated

circuit models: SXNT0005, SXNT0006, SXNT0008, and SXNT0009. They were selected

because they cover the characteristics of the product family: three, five and nine ports, plus RJ45

and fiber optics.

Performance of network technology is typically tested at room temperature and testing for

temperature extremes normally applies to fire safety and unit survival. The SIXNET procedure

specifies proper operation of the network while at high and low temperatures.

The support test equipment, and the associated software used to interpret results, performs a suite

of tests for switches and routers connecting to Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay, and Token Ring

networks.

III. Equipment Configuration:

GME witnessed the unit in satisfactory condition for testing, however the manufacturer is

responsible for ensuring that the equipment under test (EUT) represents the product line. The

manufacturer is also responsible for the temperature test plan and for assuring that this report is

consistent with that plan.

The EUT was operating in a continuous mode utilizing and testing its Ethernet message functions.

The EUT was also set to self-test upon power up. The EUT performance criteria are to receive,

store, and forward data while disturbances and traffic are present on the network. Failure

indications include: data variations, repeatable malfunctions, packet losses, throughput

degradation, and erroneous faults.

V. Measurement Location:

The GME laboratory is located at 219 Blake Roy Road, Middlebury, VT. GME is internationally

accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) and meets the quality

requirements in EN 45001-1989 and ISO/IEC 17025 (1999), "General Requirements for the

Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories.” For scope of accreditation, contact GME.

VI. Measurement Procedures:

Cold Temperature: –40 ˚C (tolerance to –60 ˚C)

Hot Temperature: +85 ˚C (tolerance to +95 ˚C)

Test Cycle : 1 Hour, 30 Minutes

A worst-case scenario is to prevent heat build-up during the cold test, and to allow heat build-up

during the hot test. To achieve this condition per the test plan, the EUT will have their covers

removed for the cold test and replaced for the hot test.

During the cold test, the units will be wrapped up in plastic to prevent snow from accumulating on

the electronics. Silica packs will be placed inside to absorb the moisture.

1. Nine/Three-Port Switch Temperature Extremes:

a. Set up instrumentation in laboratory.

i. Attach thermocouple to the unit that will monitor the temperature of the IC’s.

ii. Attach oscilloscope to the regulator output.

b. Initial readings at room temperature are taken with no power to the unit.

c. Connect each of the ports on the EUT to the computer network analyzer.

i. Run test software “ETGT9ES 3ES configuration.sig”.

ii. Use eight tester ports and the ninth port is fiber optic.

d. Perform cold test first.

i. Chamber is lowered to –60 ˚C for 30 minutes.

ii. Ensure temperature of the chip is the same as the ambient.

iii. Power the unit and observe the cold start.

e. Monitor the chip temperature, ambient temperature, voltage ripple, and voltage peak.

f. Print reports from software evaluation of throughput, packet loss, and back-to-back.

g. The hot test is second – allow about 30 minutes of soak time for the unit to thaw.

i. Take initial readings of temperature, ripple and voltage. Power down unit.

ii. Set the temperature inside the chamber to 95 ºC.

iii. Ensure temperature of the chip is the same as the ambient.

iv. Power the unit and observe the hot start.

h. Monitor the chip temperature, ambient temperature, voltage ripple, and voltage peak.

j. Print reports from software evaluation of throughput, packet loss, and back-to-back.

2. Five-Port Switch Temperature Extremes:

a. Set up instrumentation in laboratory.

f. Print reports from software evaluation of throughput, packet loss, and back-to-back.

g. The hot test is second – allow about 30 minutes of soak time for the unit to thaw.

VII. Summary of Results:

The SIXNET ET-GT-5ES-1 five-port Ethernet switch, ET-GT-3ES-2SC three-port Ethernet

switch with fiber-optic connection, and ET-GT-9ES-2SC nine-port Ethernet switch with fiber-

optic connection operate successfully in the temperature range of –40˚C to +85˚C. The throughput

was greater than 99.0%, the packet loss was less than 0.5%, and the back-to-back test was equally

as accurate.

Sections IX through XIV contain the software reports referenced in measurement procedures of

VI-1 through -2 in accordance with failure and performance criteria described in Section III and the

manufacturer’s temperature test plan.
