I am proud and excited to share with you the Chesapeake College Foundation’s inaugural annual report to the community. The Foundation supports the efforts of Chesapeake College to provide educational and training opportunities that meet the wide-ranging needs of our community. Not only is philanthropic support from the community essential to providing scholarships that make students’ educational goals more accessible and attainable, it also enables the College to innovate and grow programs beyond what is possible within the annual operating budget.

This has been a year of extraordinary change and growth at the College. We welcomed a new President, expanded our focus upon workforce and skilled trades programming, as well as invigorated our academic programs. We look forward to engaging with the community as we continue to grow and adapt in response to regional needs.

The stories shared within this report provide a brief glimpse into your impact; they showcase what your financial support makes possible for our students and our community. On behalf of the Chesapeake College Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for your commitment to our students and our College.

As we begin a new decade and implement our Strategic Plan, we are innovating and evolving as an institution. Even as Chesapeake College changes to best meet the needs of the service area, our commitment to student success remains a priority.

Since my appointment in May 2018, we have increased our outreach and services to students, business, and industry to enhance our workforce development programming. During that time, we have also strengthened our partnerships with regional high schools, colleges and universities to ensure the

best outcomes for our dual enrollment, traditional and transfer students. The results of these efforts can be seen throughout the Mid Shore. The technicians who repair your HVAC systems, the nurses who care for you, and the elementary school teachers who educate your children each likely began their careers in one of our programs. These students use essential skills acquired at Chesapeake to support us all.

We enjoy a critical collaboration with individuals and organizations that generously support our work for the community. In this annual report, we highlight the impact that you have had on our refocused efforts to strengthen Chesapeake’s role as a catalyst for economic growth on the Mid Shore. Because of you, we are making progress in generating resources that directly support students, improve our programs, and fortify our institution. Thank you for your support of Chesapeake College.

Clifford P. Coppersmith, Ph.D. President, Chesapeake College

As our community’s college, Chesapeake College strives to be affordable and accessible. Scholarship funding from our donors is essential to ensuring affordability and accessibility for students interested in expanding their employment opportunities. Aaron Turner is one such student and Chesapeake has been his PLACE to jumpstart a career. Aaron is not only a custodian at Chesapeake College but is also a student in our electrician program and a Chesapeake

College Foundation scholarship recipient. Scholarship support has enabled Aaron to progress through the electrical program where he is gaining marketable skills for his future. Currently, Aaron is in the midst of the Electrical Training Level 4, Part 1 course and has one more course to complete before beginning a career as a certified electrician.

“Learning a skilled trade gives me another way to provide for my family since nobody can take away the knowledge

I have gained, and people will always need electricians, plumbers, and carpenters. I am grateful to be learning valuable skills now that will create more opportunities

for my future. Without scholarship support, those opportunities would have been out of my reach.”

With industry demand for a skilled workforce high, Chesapeake College saw a need to train more students more quickly. A curriculum redesign led to the creation of a new Welding/Fabrication Certificate program that shortened the duration of the program while creating opportunities for specialization in the areas required by employers. With the new welding and fabrication curriculum ready to go, attention turned to the program’s lab space, which was in desperate need of upgrades to support the growth of and changes to the program. As a result of a generous gift from the John and Irene DeLuca Foundation, the College was able to expand the number of fully-equipped student workstations from six to 14 and introduce new fabrication equipment to support the program’s growth. John DeLuca believes in the power of philanthropy combined with the power of Chesapeake College to be a “game changer” in building a trained workforce for the Mid-Shore community. Through Chesapeake College, John found his TIME to help meet industry needs and attract new business while simultaneously training students for high-paying, high-demand career opportunities.

impacting: THE GROWTH OF A WORKFORCE

“Chesapeake College is a jewel in our grasp; it is our community’s college. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all of us to support Chesapeake in being the best it can be at moving our region forward educationally and economically.” John DeLuca Chesapeake College Foundation Donor

In FY2019, you, our philanthropic community of donors, helped the Chesapeake College Foundation:

“We are very excited to partner with Chesapeake College and Yamaha Outboards to help fill our industry’s need for quality,

trained marine outboard techs. The development of this new program is proof that the College is very receptive to

the needs of the local business community. Hopefully the success of our Marine Engine Systems Course will

encourage other local businesses and industries to partner with the College for program development.”

Rob Marsh Wye River Marine

impacting: NEW PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT IN AN AREA OF HIGH DEMAND

Chesapeake College strives to be an engine of economic development for the Mid-Shore and heard the call from the local marine industry to develop a training program. One key advocate for the development of the College’s new Marine Engine Systems course was Wye River Marine. Wye River Marine quickly became

a true industry partner for the College and found their PLACE to help build a pipeline of qualified marine services technicians for the region. In addition to helping the College define industry training needs, Wye River Marine also made a significant philanthropic investment in the start-up of the Marine Engine Systems course. That investment established a marine technician lab on campus with four workstations including outboard motors and a complement of tools. To date, 48 students have been trained through four offerings of the course. Wye River Marine and the College look forward to future opportunities to expand offerings in the marine trades into a full certificate program.

impacting: STUDENTS PURSUING TECHNICAL TRAINING TO GROW CAREERS

“Since there is very little financial assistance available for people seeking to change careers or even begin a career in certain fields, we felt this was an area in which our club could make a difference.”

Rayona Bennett Woman’s Club of St. Michaels President

For many years, the Woman’s Club of St. Michaels has awarded an annual scholarship to one or more graduating seniors at St. Michaels High School who went on to four-year institutions for their post-secondary education. After visiting Chesapeake College to learn more about workforce training programs, the Woman’s Club of St. Michaels found their TIME to think about scholarships in a new way. As a result, they established a scholarship at Chesapeake College for students pursuing noncredit workforce training programs. Their scholarship is already benefiting student Zhayra Nieto-Corea, a young woman enrolled in Chesapeake’s electrician program.
