INNOVATION

Crossville was the first to manufacture large-format

porcelain tile in the United States and is still the

innovator today. Crossville’s production facilities are

the benchmarks in the industry and it is the first to

integrate new equipment and processes. The company

has recently completed an $11 million expansion, which

included a new R&D lab and a new tile press that allows

Crossville to manufacture tile in sizes and shapes

previously not offered by domestic manufactures.

landfills each year to create third-party certified

recycled products.

Sustainability

Not only is embedded Porcelain Stone more efficient and cost effective, but it

is also a more sustainable option than traditional masonry. Crossville currently

offers Porcelain Stone products with certified recycled content ranging

from 20 to 40 percent. In addition to recycled content, however, many other

characteristics of Porcelain Stone make it inherently sustainable:

• Porcelain Stone’s low water absorption does not allow penetration of water, which impacts the integrity and effectiveness of insulation— .05 percent water absorption compared to 4-6 percent for traditional masonry brick or thin brick.

• Porcelain Stone requires 80 percent less raw material and natural gas to produce and deliver versus face brick.

• The firing time—directly related to energy consumption—for Porcelain Stone is one hour, compared to 72 hours for brick.

• One transport truck can deliver approximately eight times more square footage of Porcelain Stone than conventional brick.

• Crossville’s Porcelain Stone may contribute LEED points in categories MR 4.1/4.2 Recycled Content; MR 5.1/MR5.2 Regional Extraction and Manufacturing; and in the Innovation and Design classification for its thermal benefits.

• When applicable, Crossville’s Tile Take-Back™ program may allow for points in the MR 2.1/2.2 Construction Waste Management category.

Advantages of Embedded Porcelain Stone®

When used in conjunction with our exterior cladding systems, Crossville’s

Porcelain Stone® offers clear and measureable advantages over traditional

masonry, among them decreased construction costs, less site disturbance,

low to zero maintenance after installation, and accelerated construction

schedules. Porcelain Stone is also stronger; Crossville’s exterior cladding

system creates a monolithic structure with 5,000-+ psi strength.

Offering all the design options of laid-up masonry, embedded Porcelain

Stone allows more usable space on the same footprint. For example,

a Porcelain Stone insulated wall has a thickness of 10 inches, compared

to 16 inches for a conventional masonry wall. Per floor, that equals an

additional 225 square-feet for a building with a footprint of 300-foot by

500-foot. For a commercial building with a lease rate of $21 per square-

foot, that is an additional $4,725 per month in lease revenue.
