Purple Line Extension Construction Updates An Interview with the Wilshire/Fairfax Station: Part 2

Purple Line Extension (PLE): What has most pleased you?

Wilshire/Fairfax Station (Fairfax): The other Purple Line stations—Vermont,Normandie and Western—could not have been nicer. Some thought that Westernwould be a little touchy, no longer being the station farthest west, but she hasbeen very friendly.

PLE: I understand Section 1 of the Purple Line Extension will open in late 2023.

Fairfax: Yes, there is much work to be done, but we are on our way! Section 2 isscheduled to finish in 2025 and Section 3 in 2027—all before the 2028 Olympics.

Section 2 Updates

The Wilshire/Reeves Staging Yard is anticipated to be finished in April when thefinal sound wall is installed on the west side of the yard. Across the way,demolition of the N Canon properties to create another staging yard tofacilitate Purple Line Extension construction is expected to be complete earlythis month. Once demolition is through, the design-builder will build a 20-foottall sound wall around the perimeter of the property.

Creation of a temporary bus layover in Century City will resume this month andis expected to be ready by the end of May. Decking to create a temporarystreet surface while excavation of the station box continues below is currentlytaking place within the Constellation Bl Closure.

Section 3 On March 21, a community meeting was held to discuss the ongoing and

upcoming work in Section 3. A majority of questions were about undergroundeasements related to the tunnel alignment. For more information on theunderground tunnel alignment for Section 3 please click here.

The Purple Line Extension Construction Relations team is working closely withthe U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The team attended a Town HallMeeting on the campus of the West LA VA Medical Center on March 28.Attendees were mostly comprised of residents of the 300-unit CalVets Homelocated on the hospital campus.

Pre-construction activities for the Westwood/UCLA Station includes advanceutility relocation and piling, while activities for the Westwood/VA HospitalStation includes utility investigations and electrical work to power the tunnelboring machines that will be digging the Westwood tunnels.

Metro’s contractors will be working to identify, relocate or reconfigureunderground water utilities on Wilshire Bl between Westwood Bl and Gayley Av.Electrical system work or upgrades is being performed by the Los AngelesDepartment of Water and Power on Westwood Bl between Ashton Av andLindbrook Av.
