Dont be ooled by others

Once Expona Control is installed and maintained correctly, the slip resistance will tend to improve with age. Over time, as the top

layer wears, aggregate will be retained and new will be revealed, to continue the job o imparting the required perormance, gaining

value or years to come.

Conversely, products being s old as saety oors which have very thin coatings o aggregate applied or eature a slightly roughersurace emboss may pass an ex-actory ramp test but only oer short term slip resistance which will reduce ater installation and wear.

Commercial saety oors oering sustainable wet slip resistance must meet the European Saety Flooring Standard o EN 13845,

with the 50,000 cycles abrasion test as well as achieving 36 and above on the pendulum wet test.

Expona Control rerames this practice as something more than just commerce, showing a diligence in construction

to ensure these key criteria are met.

Where can Expona Control be used?

Expona Control is developed or use in public areas where there

is a risk o spillage or temporary surace water that could make

the oor unsae without the necessary riction. These i nclude:

Buildings with direct access to outside; areas open to rainwater

which can be trafcked inside, by eet, luggage, pushchairs,

wheelchairs etc. This is a common issue within the retail, leisure,

ofce, education and healthcare sectors.

It is worth noting that Expona Control neednt necessarily

be installed throughout a building, but can be specied or

particular areas o potential risk. A good example is a multi-

departmental store where Expona Control is selected or main

entrance points plus areas such as drink serveries, ood halls

and public bathrooms; where liquids may be present. Standard

Polyor luxury vinyl tiles can then be specied or low risk 'dry

slip' areas, to ensure the continuity o the interior and oor

design scheme.

Expona Control is a culmination o around 30 years o Polyor experience

in the manuacturing o saety oors. Todays oer o unrivalled collections

provides an exceptional level o perormance and quality which cater or a

wide range o commercial and residential applications.

Saety ooring is increasingly specied to provide underoot security

or its users; be it customers, employees, students, patients, the general

public and homeowners. Polyor is unswerving in its commitment to

maintaining the level o slip resistance throughout the guaranteed lie o

the product. Expona Control perectly exhibits our continued ocus and is

You will already know o Polyors saety ooring collections under the

market leading Polysae brand. In terms o sustainable slip resistance and

technical dominance Expona Control achieves the same outstanding

results. However, as this is the rst collection o sustainable slip resistant

LVTs in the market, we have positioned this under the Expona brand a

well known and respected collection o premium luxury vinyl tiles.

Polyor LVTs are regularly selected or their high-design aesthetics and

heavy commercial suitability across all main sectors, including retail, leisure,

ofce, education and healthcare as well as the key housing market. Each o

the vinyl tiles and planks are meticulously manuactured to eature a robust

and hardwearing composition supported by a simple cleaning regime.

Mirroring the undoubted beauty o wood, stone and concrete, Expona

Control brings with it the added dimension o sustainable wet slip

resistance, meaning it can be condently chosen or areas where there are

potential risks o spillages and the transportation o moisture rom outside.

Achieving 36 and above on the Pendulum wet test and a surace

roughness o 20 microns and above means Expona Control is ully HSE

compliant, receiving a low slip risk classication and conorming to slip

resistant guidelines. Aligned with the Polysae collections, Expona Control

ully conorms with EN 13845, meaning the product is ully slip resistant in

areas where surace water may be present.

Creativity and practicality have huge roles to play in the

development process, allowing us to impose a meaningul

purpose to the collection. The introduction o Expona Control

acilitates the importance o being able to work alongsideother Polyor LVT or saety oor ranges, so the building can be

assessed and planned in its entirety.

Put simply, slip resistance is achieved by increasing the riction between the oot and the oor. This traction increase is due to

the inclusion o aggregate within the composition o Expona Control. These particles are not simply sprinkled onto the top as

a coating that will wear o ater a short time in use. Instead, aggregates are incorporated within the wear layer o each tile and

plank to ensure sustainable slip perormance. This enhanced wear layer creates a rougher, harder riction surace to bite i nto

the sole o the ootwear, to create the necessary durability and underoot saety. The slip resistant properties are urther brought

to lie in areas where moisture is trafcked rom outside, such as retail stores which lead directly onto the high street. This is a

crucial demand or many buildings, across all sectors, meaning Expona Control reduces the risk o slip unlike other oor nishes

which may prohibit their specication and use.

WOOd COLLECTION STONE COLLECTIONAccurate authenticity is at the heart o Expona Control, representing the allure,distinction and unpredictability o natural timber. To replicate these materials,

the products may contain knots and markings as part o their design.

A blend o clear, white and brown aluminium oxide particles are incorporated in

the perormance layer to achieve the sustainable slip resistance which may be

visible when inspected at close range but will be almost invisible when installed

corporate style.

Oering a more gurative approach to that o traditional saety ooring, inlay strips can be utilised to create a more intricate

shape or to accentuate a eature area. Tiles and planks rom the wood and stone collections can also be installed side by side to

delineate rooms, create zonal areas or used simply as a more imaginative detail.

The possible combinations and oor design options promotes Expona Control as a more expandable saety ooring system,

and is an opportunity to create a personalised oor base or a wide array o commercial interiors. Using the structure and

Unlike standard Polyor luxury vinyl tile collections, we recommend that bespoke waterjet cutting and intricate curved shapes

are not utilised with Expona Control. It is crucial that the sustainable slip resistance is maintained at all times and the inclusion

o such shapes may cause unconventional joins which could lead to unnecessary risks. Also, as the s lip resistant aggregate is

incorporated in the wear layer, reshly cut edges o products laid together may lead to unsquare edges and subsequent gaps.

resistance test methods and to assist in the specication o saety oorcoverings. Contact Polyor or urther inormation.

CE Marking

All ooring sold in Europe must carry the CE mark and show results on mandatory perormance aspects re and slip.

The vast majority o smooth vinyl oors will carry a Dry Slip rating this essentially means that the ooring is sae or use.

For slip resistant ooring, you should look or an ES rating.

Points to consider:

HSE recommends the Pendulum test in conjunction with s urface microroughness meter for real life in-situ results.

All Polyor safety collections adhere to HSE Guidelines, achieving 36+ in the Pendulum wet test with a surface roughness

o Rz 20m.

The slip resistance is assured for the guaranteed life of the product.

RIBA Approved CPD seminar for the specication of safety vinyl oorcoverings is available directly from Polyor representatives.

As with all Polyor saety oor collections, Expona Control is subjected to the rigours o internal testing on the production

line and in our laboratories to ensure they are t to serve their purpose as sustainable saety oors. These actions are ully

backed up by external testing carried out by independent bodies to meet relevant industry standards.

Expona Control retains its aesthetic and perormance characteristics to demonstrate outstanding durability and abrasion

resistance, adhering to the guidelines detailed in EN 13845. It is crucially stated that the oor should suer no ill eects

when tested or abrasion over 50,000 cycles, as in EN 660-2, where a stringent testing procedure is applied involving

constant cycles o abrasion under pressure with the continuous application o grit.

Stain Resistance

As Expona Control is an ideal selection or many interiors across the main commercial sectors, resistance to everyday dirt

and staining will be an i mportant consideration. Areas such as retail and leisure units where dirt and moisture is trafcked

directly rom outside, plus servery, dining and break out points where spillages may occur, mean an easy maintenance oor,

which does not i nhibit the saety aspects, is a crucial requirement. Maintenance and chemical resistance documents are

readily available online or rom Polyor Customer Technical Services, should they be required.

Expona Control not only represents the true distinction o natural materials but also oers guaranteed and sustainable

wet slip resistance, possessing an aspect that urther reveals itsel through its continuous use.

Slip resistance can be a conusing area or specier and client alike. On one hand there is a requirement to speciy ooring that

s sae and t or use, against a background o increasing awareness and litigation in the case o slips and trips. On the other

hand, there is a plethora o test methods to assess the security o oors, various manuacturer claims and competing product to

complicate choice. Add in colour choice, decoration and maintenance and the conusion can multiply.

Polyor would always give the same two key points o advice beore slip resistant ooring is specied.

. Use a reputable manuacturer that can demonstrate previous experience in areas you are working on.

2. Ask or advice the team at Polyor have more experience in this area than any one individual could acquire.

Slip resistance test methods

Polyor test against a variety o international test methods or slip resistance and the results are published or all to see.

The test methods explained here are the most relevant and commonly used to make precision assessment o oor saety.

RRL Pendulum Co-Ecient o Friction Test

This test method is recommended and preerred by the HSE to assess the dynamic coefcient o riction o a oorcovering,

achieved by swinging a dummy heel over the oor surace (see the below image) to simulate a oot slipping on a wet oor.

A standardised rubber sample is used to represent a standard shoe sole o average slip resistance. Widely used, the greatest

strength o this test is that it can easily be used in-situ, so the slip resistance o the oor can be assessed over its whole lie. Resultsare quoted using a Four S (Slider 96) rubber slider. Whilst oor suraces can be tested in the wet or dry, the results indicated always

quote the wet result as this is the condition in which slipping is likely to occur. Be wary o very high dry results quoted in isolation.

HSE Guidelines call or a oor to give a Pendulum test value o 36 and above in the wet to be classied as a low slip potential.

Expona Control achieves a Pendulum reading in the wet o 36+ which lies within the low slip risk category and this slip resistance is

assured or the guaranteed lie o the product.

Surace Roughness

This test is also avoured by the HSE to be used on-site in conjunction with the Pendulum test and involves measuring the total

surace microroughness o the ooring with a surace roughness meter. A mean value o several peak to valley measurements

s electronically calculated on the surace by tracing a needle over the oor at various points. This measure is elt to be a good

predictor o slip perormance. Expona Control, as with all Polyor saety products exceed Rz 20m, and in accordance with HSE

Guidelines is classed as a product with low slip potential in water-wet pedestrian areas. In order to cope with dierent contaminant

spillages o various process materials, the surace roughness o the ooring must be s ufcient in order to penetrate the squeeze

lms created when there is a presence o wet contaminants between shoe sole and the oor that prevents solid-to-solid contact.

The surace roughness the oor requires is governed by the viscosity level o liquid contaminants in the application area.

The Ramp Test (DIN 51130 & AS/NZ 4586)

This test involves a person in shod oot walking on an inclined ramp, in the presence o an oil contaminant. The resulting level o

degrees the ramp can be inclined beore the operator slips is categorised into appropriate R values running rom R9 up to R13.

This test has been commonly used in Europe, especially in the hard ooring sector. Whilst Polyor quotes results o this test to

AS/NZS 4586, it is believed that the Ramp test can be used to mislead. Firstly, a common misconception is that the R scale runs

rom R1 to R13 with R1 being the most slippery. In act, an R9 rated product is classied as the oor with the least slip resistance.

This allows manuacturers to imply R9 products are sold as specialist, slip resistant suraces. Furthermore, this test is carried out

ex-actory and is not practical to replicate on-site, so gives no reliable measure o perormance and wear over the lie o the oor,as is possible with the Pendulum and surace roughness tests. For instance, a actory applied thin coating or heavy emboss could

be applied to pass the Ramp test but the resistance will usually change signicantly on installation and would wear o in use ater

maintenance regimes have been applied.

The HSE Slips Assessment Tool (SAT)

This is a computer sotware programme developed by the HSE which, in conjunction with a hand-held surace microroughness

meter, can be used in-situ to risk assess the slip potential presented by pedestrian walkway suraces. The sotware operator eeds in

normation on-site such as: the surace roughness readings, amount and causes o oor surace contamination, ootwear used and

the cleaning regime implemented in order to gain a slip risk classication or the oor. These actors are taken into account along

with others detailed in the slip potential model. This simple sotware programme can be downloaded ree o charge, rom

www.hse.gov.uk/slips.

EN 13845

This European Standard specically relates to particle based saety ooring. Whilst this standard covers all aspects o product

quality, it also brings in another measure o slip resistance:

ES all Polyor saety oor products achieve a rating o Enhanced Slip or use with ootwear, as opposed to DS, (meaning Dry

Slip) as stated in the EN 13893 standard.
