    Objectives

Describe how a hierarchical network supports the voice, video and data needs of a small and medium-sizedbusiness.

Match the appropriate Cisco switch to each layer in the

    hierarchical network design model.

    The Hierarchical Network Model

    The hierarchical network model:

Involves dividing the network into discrete layers:

    Access, Distribution, Core

    Benefits:

    modular design, scalable, improved performance

    The Core Layer:

The high-speed backbone of the internetwork

    Highly available and redundant

Aggregates the traffic from all distribution layer devices

    The Distribution Layer:

Aggregates data received from the access layer devices (switches)before it is transmitted to the core layer for routing

    Controls network traffic using policies

    Delineates broadcast domains (VLANs)

    The Access Layer:

Interfaces with end devices (PCs, printers, IP phones)

Controlls which devices are allowed to communicate on the network

Includes switches, hubs, wireless access points

Converged Networks: convergence is the process ofcombining voice, video and data on a data network

Quality of Service (QoS) plays an important role

Difficult (cost) if already invested in 3 separate networks

Benefit: only one network to manage

    Summary

Hierarchical Design model addresses performance, scalability, maintainability & manageability issues.

Traffic Analysis is used to monitor network performance.

Hierarchical Design Model is composed of 3 layers:

    Access

    Distribution

    Core

Switches selected for each layer must meet the needs ofeach hierarchical layer as well as the needs of the business.
