TecHnicAl deTAils:
Acoustic lens Technology
To obtain the best quality at higher frequencies, the listener
should ideally be situated in front of the loudspeakers in the
direct path of the reproduced sound. A revolutionary invention
that optimises audio reproduction, Acoustic Lens Technology
reduces the need for this central listening location by ensuring
uniform high frequency sound dispersion over 180°.
digital signal Processing (dsP) functions
Sound Focus: Sound focus enables the listener to optimise
the Advanced Sound System for various occupants in the car.
Customers can choose between ‘front’, ‘movie’, ‘rear’ and ‘all’
seat settings.
Surround level: In a Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System
the surround level controls the width of the sound image. This
feature allows user customisation of the system to enhance
personal preference.
Volume levelling: Audio reproduced by the Advanced Sound
System is continually adjusted according to the speed of the
vehicle, fan noise and any other external noise sources present
in the cabin. A microphone constantly measures the environ-
ment to ensure that sound quality is dynamically optimised for
cabin conditions, no matter whether the customer is listening to
a CD or the radio.
Before playing any kind of music you should explain the Bang &
Olufsen sound philosophy and check your sound settings.
Bang & olufsen sound philosophy: Clean, crisp, and precise.
Nothing is changed. If it’s on the CD you should hear it. The
music remains as true as possible to the original recording so
you hear what the artist intended you to hear.
Tone: All settings (including surround) should be kept in the
neutral (12 o’clock) position. This default setting ensures that
you demonstrate the system with sound qualities as
Bang & Olufsen intended.
Music selection: For an optimum demonstration you should
play about a minute from three different tracks in accordance
with the musical tastes of the customer. First, set the scene,
using a simple vocal track. Next, move onto something a little
more complex and dynamic. Finish off with an upbeat number
that demonstrates the power of the system.
The Bang & Olufsen demonstration CD provides you with a
variety of genres. Each track is accompanied by comments from
our acoustics’ team, giving you pointers as to what you can say
to the customer.

TrAcK exAMPles:
Track: 1. Title: Easy. Artist: The Commodores
This old favourite is a simple mix with a well-defi ned sound
image. It is possible to localise the vocal in the centre, as well
as the backing vocals at the very widest part of the mix, i.e. far
left and right.
Track: 2. Title: Barber of Seville. Composer: Rossini
This orchestral track is a live performance which, surprisingly,
was recorded over 20 years ago. The sound system allows the
listener to hear the natural woodwind, the full horns and the
bright, yet smooth strings in full clarity, as though you were in
the concert hall with orchestra on stage in front of you. This
track allows you to demonstrate each instrument in its right
place well-distributed across the sound stage.
Track: 3. Title: Played-A-Live. Artist: Safri Duo
This track is an interesting juxtaposition of percussion with
electronic synthesizers and keyboards. The layered synths make
use of the full frequency spectrum giving a real sense of the live
event. This track can be used as an impressive demonstration to
really show off the sound system at high levels.

dedicated sound tuning
The Audi A8 fi tted with the Advanced Sound System from
Bang & Olufsen undergoes 400 hours of tuning by the Bang &
Olufsen Automotive acoustic team. Amongst many other factors
the team uses data about cabin size, the materials used in the
A8 cabin, and engine performance to fi ne-tune the sound
system. The goal: to ensure that every Audi A8 is delivered with
the perfect Bang & Olufsen sound!
ICEpower® amplifi er
ICE: Intelligent, Compact & Effi cient. ICEpower® allows
Bang & Olufsen to design compact amplifi ers with a minimum
of thermal loss and a maximum of output power.
loudspeakers and cabinets
All materials for the loudspeakers are custom-selected and
developed for the Audi A8. Loudspeakers in the cabinet ensure
uniform conditions for each speaker. Combined with ICEpower®
amplifi cation and DSP, these closed cabinets give the acoustic
team complete control over the sound system.
The result?
A world-class sound stage in terms of both width and depth,
located directly in front of the listeners, wherever they are sat
in the cabin.

sTArT Introduce the customer to Bang & Olufsen and
provide a brief overview of the system’s physical elements:
19 loudspeakers, 19 amplifiers with around 1400 watts of total
power.
sHow The beautifully crafted aluminium speaker grills and
special hole pattern which bring exclusivity to the overall
experience.
Show the location of the 19 speakers, the microphone in the
ceiling and (if convenient) the amplifiers behind the left rear seat.
