Waterborne micro-organisms are responsible for adverse effects on colour, flavour, odour and shelf life of products, not forgetting the potential health risks to consumers. It is therefore, the fundamental objective of food and beverage manufacturers to eliminate micro-organisms from process water, product water and sugar solutions in order to overcome this problem.

atg Evoqua UV treatment eliminates all types of water-borne micro-organisms (bacteria, moulds, spores, viruses and yeasts), this is an established method of disinfecting drinking water throughout the world. As a chemical-free and low maintenance technology, UV disinfection is a proven solution for a range of process applications, from CIP rinsing to liquid sugar and is of great importance where chemicals cannot be used in the process due to the need to avoid changes in the organoleptic properties of end products.

Disinfection with UV light is a chemical-free method of ensuring that any micro-organisms found to be present in fluids are unable to replicate and thus remain inert. Correctly sized UV systems can also be used to de-chlorinate and de-ozonate process and make-up water.

LIQUID SUGARYeasts and moulds are major contaminant in concrentratedliquid sugar solutions. atg Evoqua have designed a specific range of liquid sugar UV disinfection systems to deal with the high viscosities encountered in sugar solutions up to 67 brix. The SSL (sugar solution) range utilises the latest in thin-film quartz and UVC lamp technology, with specially designed UV chambers. The leading SSL System range has been adopted by leading food and beverage brands and manufacturers world wide.

DECHLORINATIONHigh doses of UV light at >200nm provides a chemical-free solution to alternative costly and energy heavy dechlorinating techniques of feed/process water for use in food and beverage production.

MAKE UP & PRODUCT WATEREffectively applied as a final treatment at point of use, installation can be on a recirculation loop or at strategic points feeding mixing vessels. UV systems can be fully automatic, which is particularly relevant when the water use is intermittent, such as a in a batch process.

PROCESS WATEREquipment such as sprayers and heat exchangers, which rely on recirculating water, will vastly benefit from water supplies purified by UV treatment. Final rinse water for RTE (Ready To Eat) products are also extensively disinfected using UV technology.

STORAGE TANKSStorage tanks are particularly susceptible to contamination and bacterial breeding. When installed on a re-circulation loop, UV disinfection ensures stored water remains in perfect condition by inhibiting bacterial growth.

RO MEMBRANE PROTECTIONUV disinfection is proven to protect RO membranes from bio fouling and can significantly increase membrane life by eliminating harmful bacteria from feed water.

MAINS WATERTo protect against the risk of chlorine resistant pathogens, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia in mains and borehole water, UV disinfection is a widely adopted disinfection barrier for process water used throughout the beverage industry.

BOTTLED WATEREven high-quality borehole and spring waters can contain natural flora and fauna. The only appropriate method of disinfection is by UV treatment. UV will vastly enhance shelf life, without affecting the natural taste or mineral balance.

BREWINGCutting of high-gravity brews poses risk of contamination by deaerated liquor, where disinfection of process water is required. UV is an effective and convenient technology as units function automatically. Additionally, CIP rinse systems usually rely on UV for non-chemical disinfection.

WASTEWATER & WATER RE-USEProcess plant effluents can be treated and re-used, reducing water consumption and ensuring all discharges meet with local environment regulations.

SUGAR SYRUP RANGE The atg Evoqua Technology’s Sugar Syrup range has been specifically designed and developed for the treatment of liquid sugar solutions and liquid sweeteners. The market leading design provides an advanced, low maintenance disinfection solution that is both easy to install and simple to operate.

The Sugar Syrup UV ranges are proven to effectively protect against a range of micro-organisms, such as thermophilic bacteria in high viscosity liquids, including liquid sugar solutions up to 69 brix, with a UV Transmittance as low as 10-15%.

The Sugar Syrup range utilises the latest in advanced thin-film quartz and UVC lamp technology, with specially designed UV chambers to ensure an even UV dose distribution into the liquid sugar solution and high disinfection performance (typically 99.9% reduction in micro-organisms).

System features include sanitary finishes and connections, plus a range of control and instrumentation options, including MODBUS & PROFIBUS.

UV disinfection has many advantages over alternative methods and as a physical, chemical free technology. It does not introduce toxins or residual substances into either the ingredients or the manufacturing process. Importantly UV does not effect the chemical composition, taste, odour, texture or pH of food or beverage products.

The Sugar Syrup UV systems can be used either on a recirculation loop from the liquid sugar storage tanks or immediately prior to the point of use, ensuring incoming microbiological contaminants are destroyed and there is minimal chance of post-treatment contamination.

As liquid sugar solutions have a high density and low UV Transmittance, typically between 10 - 40% UVT, all atg Evoqua UV systems for liquid sugar disinfection utilise high intensity, medium pressure UV lamps and the unique thin-film quartz technology to ensure optimum disinfection performance.

WF RANGE The new WF range is designed to be the most compact UV system on the market. Together with its hydraulically optimised UV chamber design and leading polychromatic lamp technology, the WF design is also one of the most efficient and best performing UV systems in its class.

Featuring 8 models in the range, in single lamp and twin lamp configurations, the WF series design for food and beverage applications provides an ‘ultra compact’ retrofit solution that will easily install into the tightest of water treatment plant rooms.

As standard, the WF range includes UV intensity monitoring, over temperature control, automatic quartz cleaning systems and enhanced safety quick release TwistlokTM UV Lamps, allowing the functionality and design of the WF range of UV systems to meet the expectations and requirements of food and beverage manufacturers worldwide.

Mechanism of UV for De-Chlorination: -Chlorine gas dissolves in water to form hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid. HOCl and OCl- are the dominant forms of chlorine in aqueous solution at a pH of 5 – 9. Both these chemical species absorb UV within a wavelength range of 250 - 350 nm with the HOCl peak at 292 nm and ClO- between 270 and 310 nm. This absorption characteristic is such that medium pressure lamps have a distinct advantage over low pressure lamps. Photolysis of HOCl and OCl- proceeds as follows:

The hydroxyl radical (•OH) reacts with dissolved organic matter (DOM), and the chlorine radical (Cl•) is reduced to the chloride ion by DOM. The UV dose required is at least a magnitude higher than that required for UV disinfection.

OZONE DESTRUCTIONOzone is also a very powerful and effective oxidizing agent, mainly used to degrade organic contaminants. The same chemical properties that allow ozone to react with organic material give it the ability to react with organic material within the human body and potentially cause harmful health consequences. Breakdown of residual ozone is therefore essential before the ozonated water can be used.

Mechanism of UV for Ozone Destruction: -The mechanism for removing ozone is through UV energy severing one of the oxygen bonds in an ozone molecule. Ozone strongly absorbs UV in the 210 - 300 nm range. As a result of this reaction, each ozone molecule is converted into one oxygen radical and one oxygen molecule. Free oxygen radicals will then combine with each other to form oxygen molecules.

Although ozone is readily destroyed by UV, it requires a higher UV dose than used for disinfection (inactivation of micro-organisms) – approximately three to four times the UV disinfection dose is required.

DE-CHLORINATION USING UV SYSTEMSDe-chlorination by treatment with medium pressure UV avoids all the pitfalls associated with both sodium meta-bisulphite and GAC. At high doses, UV is very effective at removing free chlorine from water. Other benefits of using UV for this purpose are:-• It eliminates labour and the safety hazard of mixing

sodium metabisulphate• It eliminates the risk of introducing microorganisms

onto reverse osmosis membranes (via sodium metabisulphite injection)

• The water receives a high UV disinfection dose• There is a degree of TOC destruction• There is an overall improved water quality at point-

of-use

UVM RANGEThe UVM range provides an advanvced solution for the application of photocatalytic applications in the food and beverage industry including; Ozone Destruction, De-chlorination and TOC reduction.

Using ultra-high power, polychromatic medium pressure lamp technology in specially engineered UV reactors, the UVM range is designed to reliably deliver the high power density and increased UV doses required to initiate photocatalytic changes to the water.
