Experiments and other field activities in 2012

• Different timing of Nitrogen fertilizer application• Effect of rice bran application for weed control• Different ratoon-ability in different plant types

and planting spacing• Demonstration of Non-tillage rice cultivation• Demonstration of HYMERIC • ( Germination habit of Basmati 370 )

• Recommendation of top-dressing : 45 – 50 days after sowing. • Top-dressing aiming to maintain “young panicle formation

stage”.• Safer timing of top-dressing: Heading stage

Different timing of Nitrogen fertilizer application

45-50 days

Different timing of Nitrogen fertilizer application

• Data collection is still on going.

• But, no significant difference on yield.

• Since farmers in MIS practicing dense planting, combination of fertilizer and spacing will be tried in next season.

Effect of rice bran on weed control

• Rice bran application (1t/ha) at 5 days after transplanting is effective to control growth of weeds.

• T1 control

• T2 500kg/ha

• T3 1t/ha

• T4 2t/ha

Effect of rice bran on weed control

• Weeds grown were taken and dried weight were checked.

• T2 – T4 had less amount of weeds than T1. But no significant difference.

• Farmers in MIS do not irrigate their fields after T/P.

Non-tillage Rice Cultivation

• To reduce field preparation cost• For smooth operation of transplanting• Previous hills/ratoons were killed by herbicide • BS 370 20 X 20cm• Yield : 3t/ha

Page 9: Experiments conducted by RICEMAPP Tamotsu SEIJI, JICA expert

HYMERIC

• To reduce labor cost for transplanting• Seedlings are raised in carbonized husks for

5days• NERICA varieties• Higher establishment rate

Page 10: Experiments conducted by RICEMAPP Tamotsu SEIJI, JICA expert

Germination of BS370

• During experimental works, BS 370 showed lower germination rate.

Germination of BS370

• 10g of seeds for 4 varieties were prepared.• Moisture content were checked and dried weight

of seeds were calculated. • Seeds were soaked into water.• Each sample was drained and weighed every 3

hours for 30 hours.
