What is ‘Service Learning’?
“A method by which students improve academic learning and develop personal skills through participating in structured service projects and sharing guided reflections on their experiences.”
(Chithra and Jacqueline, 2010)
Some facts about the learning environments within the RCs in UM
• local and non-local students from different faculties and backgrounds are allocated to live in the same RC
• RC’s mission is to enrich students’ university experience through participation in inter-disciplinary learning
Difficulties in promoting service learning in HFPJC
• not parts of any compulsory program • Course-related service learning model not
applicable• vs. HKU’s Bridge Building project in Dept.
of Architecture• no requirement/credits for students to fulfill
any service learning practicum • vs. LUHK’s 30 hrs of service + subject-
related project example
