  • Experiencias culturales

For each of the following types of cultural experiences, please complete the required portion for part 1. Then complete

part 2 for all types. All writing should be typed, Times New Roman, size 12, single- spaced and submitted

electronically. If youre a native Spanish speaker, all cultural experiences should represent something culturally

different for you. If youre of Mexican descent, find something from a different region of Mexico or another Spanish

    speaking country.

    Parte 1

    1) Spanish film (nothing higher than a rating of PG)

    a. A movie youve seen before, but now in Spanish: During the movie, make a list of at least 20 words in

Spanish which you learned as a result of watching the movie in Spanish. Note: You may use Spanish

subtitles with Spanish audio but not Spanish subtitles with English audio to assist you. Then, write an

extension script to the movie in Spanish using at least 10 of the 20 words you learned. The script should

be no shorter than 1 full page typed.

    b. A movie youve never seen before: Watch the movie in Spanish with Spanish subtitles. After the movie,

write a 1-2 page summary of the movie in English.

    2) Visiting Spanish speaking places in the community: Spend at least 30 minutes in the place of your choosing that

meets the following criteria: has a name in Spanish, you can find at least 2 items that are written almost entirely

in Spanish (e.g., a menu, sign, product packaging, etc.), and in which most workers are native Spanish speakers

(do not just assume, be sure to ask or listen for them using the language). During your visit, make a list of at

least 10 things that stand out to you related to culture (e.g., the way the waiter treated you, the way words

were written on packaging, the background music, the taste of the food, etc.) Then, write a 1-2 page synopsis of

your visit stating where you went and details about what you did while you were there, including your 10 stand-

    out items.

    3) Cultural Events: If allowed, video a portion of the event youre attending (1-2 minutes for me, more if you would

like to review it all later). If possible, take notes during the event of things you are learning about. Afterwards,

do your own research into one aspect of the cultural event. You will need to present your information in a

presentation to the class. For example, if you attend a Hispanic Heritage Month Dance event, research more

information about the dance, its steps, etc. and then dance the new dance in front of your class and show

traditional clothing, sayings, etc. Your presentation should last at least 5 minutes.

    4) Visit Websites intended for Spanish speakers (no English, or translating pages): Find the websites of at least 5

different Spanish speaking organizations (stores, community groups, companies, banks, governments, etc. do

not double up on one or the other) from Spanish speaking countries other than the U.S. Spend at least 5

minutes browsing around each website, seeing what kinds of information is available. Take notes as you browse

around. Then, find 5 comparable English speaking websites (e.g., If you had a Spanish speaking bank, find and

English speaking bank website) and write 1-2 pages about some of the differences between what you expect to

see on the Spanish speaking websites versus the English speaking websites.

    5) English interview with an adult native Spanish speaker: During your interview, please ask the following

questions: What do you consider to be one of the most important parts of your culture? Why?, What are some

challenges you face as a native Spanish speaker living in the United States?, What is one of the biggest

differences between the culture in the U.S. and the culture of ________(Mexico, Panama, Bolivia, etc.)?

Then, write three of your own questions on topics that you are curious about. Take notes as they answer. Then,

write 1-2 pages about what you learned and how this affects you in the future. Does any of it change how you

see the world? Why? Why not?

    6) Art exhibit: Visit an art exhibit that portray art by an artist from a Spanish-speaking country or about people

groups from a Spanish speaking country. Spend at least 45 minutes there, taking notes as you browse the

through the art. Be sure to read any information about the art and its history. Answer these questions: Where

is the art from? What is the arts subject? What kinds of themes do the different pieces of art share? What can

you learn about the artist from the art? How does it portray the people from that country? Which is your

favorite piece and why? Which is your least favorite piece and why? Your answers to these questions should

    be 1-2 pages.
