Experience through Algonquin College As an addition I chose to complete a course title Learning Disabilities- The Invisible Disability. I wanted to gain further knowledge about those with this type of disability to better provide care and services tailored to their needs. This course was completed with an A+ (96%). In two different community outreach courses I was able to work with the low socioeconomic status community in Ottawa by providing a dental hygiene presentation in their community geared towards their needs. I was also able to work with a coordinator for 10 long term care facilities in the Ottawa and regional area. I created a how to perform an intra oral assessment video. A group of Algonquin College 3rd year dental hygiene students (including myself) created a 2 part webinar for the nurses and personal support workers on normal and abnormal findings in the oral cavity. We then went to various long term care facilities across Ottawa and the surrounding area to educate and teach the staff (nurses, PSW etc.) on how to perform, correctly assess and document what is found in the oral cavity. Our goal was to provide a more thorough care for those residents in the long term care facilities since most do not have the funding to allow for dental services to be completed. Placements at CHEO, St.Vincent's hospital, the Youth Service Bureau and an orthodontic office.
