THE ROYAL OAK FOUNDATIONAmericans in Alliance with the National Trust of England, Wales and Northern Ireland

November 1, 2011

Dear Members, Supporters, and Friends:

We are pleased to present The Royal Oak’s Foundation’s 2010 Annual Report. This constitutes a substantial expansion in format and content of the Foundation’s Annual Giving Report, which has been appended to the summer edition of our newsletter in past years. Our aim is to provide you with a comprehensive review of the Foundation’s programs, membership statistics, fundraising and grant-making activities, and financial position for the January 1 – December 31, 2010 fiscal year.

We also want to introduce some of the very significant and exciting developments that have occurred in 2011, in particular the reaffirmation of our mission as the principal American partner of the National Trust of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Our clarified mission statement presented on the following page results from intensive discussions among staff and the Board of Directors during the first phase of the development of our new 2012-2013 strategic plan early this year. We will be seeking your input in this next year as we prioritize and develop the plan’s directives. Both the mission statement and plan center on three active verbs—learn, experience, and support—that directly correlate with our three principal operational areas: programs, membership, and development. Our vision is of a ladder of philanthropic engagement, leading individuals from participation in our programs to the commitment of membership and, ultimately, to creating a legacy of financial support for the Trust’s stewardship of the places, properties, and collections that we cherish.

2010 was a year of transition for the Foundation. In June, Chairman of the Board Patrick Gallagher stepped down, and Vice Chairman Herbert L. Camp became the interim Chairman. Mr. Camp was officially elected to the position at the December 6, 2010 meeting of the Board of Directors. Over the summer, Executive Director John J. Oddy announced his departure to assume the position of Philanthropic Director at Foundation Source. After a national search, the Board appointed Sean E. Sawyer as Executive Director effective October 25, 2010. We want to thank both Mr. Gallagher and Mr. Oddy for their years of service to Royal Oak, during which they were responsible for many notable successes. They have left the Foundation in a strong position.

In reviewing this report, you will see that, despite these transitions in leadership and continued economic uncertainty, Royal Oak maintained a steady course and even gained ground in 2010. The Foundation sponsored over 80 lectures and tours around the country, including appearances by high profile speakers such as Lord Sackville, the Duchess of Rutland, Gil Schafer, Tim Knox, and Lucy Worsley. Membership revenues increased slightly, and Royal Oak’s bottom line benefited from two benefactors in particular, the Roy and Inez Carder Trusts, which left a significant bequest to support our work, and Charlotte Moss, our 2010 Timeless Design Honoree, who used her considerable powers to make the Timeless Design Gala Benefit one of our most successful ever. We want to express our deep appreciation to Ms. Moss and the Carder family for providing such fundamental support for our work.

The 2010 Timeless Design Gala also marked the inauguration of our Heritage Award, recognizing those in the U.S. or the U.K. who have advanced the understanding and appreciation of our shared cultural heritage. We were very proud to bestow this honor on the internationally renowned Attingham Summer School Program, for which Royal Oak has provided substantial scholarship support since 1976.

In 2010, Royal Oak awarded a total of $457,700 in grants and scholarship aid, including $228,500 to the National Trust of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We thank all of you, our generous members and supporters and our colleagues on the Board and staff, for making Royal Oak such a strong partner for the National Trust and such a significant force for advancing the understanding and appreciation of British history and culture in the U.S.

Respectfully,Herbert L. Camp Sean E. Sawyer, Ph.D.Chairman Executive Director

Castle DrogoSituated on the edge of Dartmoor, Castle Drogo was built between 1911 and 1931. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens under the patronage of Sir Julius Drewe, the castle is constructed of granite and its flat roof has leaked since it was built. Royal Oak awarded $15,000 to support the restoration of the roof and conservation of the water-damaged walls and windows.

Country House LibrariesRoyal Oak awarded $1,000 in memory of the late William Lese, who played a leading role in the Country House Libraries campaign during his time as a Royal Oak Director (1991 – 2004).

Croome CourtThe Robert Adam-designed landscape park and lakeside gardens surrounded by Croome Park recently came into the care of the National Trust. Croome Court was “Capability” Brown’s first complete landscape design. Royal Oak awarded $15,000 for the ongoing restoration.

Giant’s CausewayGiant’s Causeway, along the North Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns that resulted from quickly cooling lava 65 million years ago. Royal Oak awarded $10,000 to the Trust’s major campaign to improve access to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Plans include new and upgraded walking trails and a conservation program to protect vulnerable coastal species and habitats.

Hardwick Hall Gideon Tapestries Over 400 years of exposure to light and

ANNUAL REPORT 2010

pollution have left these tapestries in need of urgent restoration. Royal Oak awarded $12,000 to continue this project, which was the subject of the 2008 Royal Oak/National Trust collaborative appeal.

Hidcote Manor Garden Royal Oak continued its support for this Gloucestershire garden with a grant of $20,000 for its ongoing restoration. Given to the Trust in 1948 by American Lawrence Johnston, Hidcote was the first property acquired specifically for its garden. An additional grant of $40,000 was made in honor of 2010 Timeless Design Award recipient Charlotte Moss.

Ickworth Silver DisplayRoyal Oak awarded $25,000 to support the creation of a dining room table setting display that will illustrate how the silver was used and demonstrate how the dining room is linked with the kitchens beneath. This grant was made possible by The Ervin/Deschamps Fund.

Khadambi Asalache’s HouseThe remarkable home of Khadambi Asalache, a Kenyan-born poet, writer and artist, celebrates Asalache’s artistic endeavor and tells his story, which encapsulates many themes associated with Britian’s diverse cultural heritage. A grant of $2,000 was awarded to support the National Trust’s efforts to protect and provide public access to the house and establish an educational and community facility nearby.

Lake DistrictUnprecedented flooding from the high winds and ferocious rain that battered

the Lake District in 2009 led to heavy damage to properties, walls, and roads. Royal Oak awarded $3,000 to support the ongoing restoration needs in the District.

Peak DistrictTwo centuries of pollution, overstocking, and wildfires have left this landscape badly eroded and in need of urgent restoration. With the generous support of Newman’s Own Foundation, Royal Oak awarded $50,000 in support of the Trust’s multifaceted restoration project to prevent erosion and to foster growth over eroded surfaces.

Seaton Delaval The National Trust purchased the stunning 18th-century Vanbrugh house, gardens and green space in Northumberland in December of 2009. Royal Oak awarded $10,000 for the preservation of the house and its surrounding parkland.

The Textile Conservation StudioRoyal Oak granted $10,000 to the Studio in honor of The Attingham Summer School, Royal Oak’s inaugural 2010 Heritage Award recipient. Located in converted 18th-century barns at Blickling Hall, in Norfolk, the state-of-the-art Conservation Studio enables conservators to tackle larger, more complex projects while minimizing risk to precious textiles.

Various National Trust PropertiesRoyal Oak awarded $10,500 to support various properties which have assisted in recruiting new members for the Foundation.

Charleston TrustThe Charleston Trust received a substantial collection of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell works in 2008. Royal Oak granted $1,800 to enable the Trust to exhibit drawings from this collection, to coincide with an exhibition entitled Radical Blooms-bury at nearby Brighton Museum in April 2011. The exhibition at Charleston will display works which have not been seen before and will give visitors an opportunity to view a portion of this large and exciting collection. Great Dixter Charitable TrustRoyal Oak awarded $28,000 to help convert the Dixter Farm – a range of farm buildings on land adjacent to Great Dixter – into essential staff, storage and maintenance facilities, student accommodation and a new space for learning.

ANNUAL REPORT 2010

Holburne MuseumSince opening its doors in 1916, the Holburne Museum has expanded its collection by over 2,000 objects and the need for repairs and expansion are greater than ever. Royal Oak awarded $22,500 for pressing repairs, refurbishing the existing building, and creating new space for all the museum’s activities. With the building’s new extension, the public will have full access to the space for the first time.

House of Lords Collection TrustThe House of Lords undertook a project in January 2008 to recreate six paintings of the Armada tapestries, which were originally hung in the House of the Lords Chamber for over 175 years until they were destroyed in the fire of 1834. With an additional grant of $134,400 from Royal Oak, the Trust was able to finish the five canvases, painted by the artist Anthony Oakshett each measuring 3.6 x 4.3 meters.

Westminster AbbeyRoyal Oak awarded $8,500 to support educational programs and the creation of the Triforium Galleries. High above the Abbey floor, the huge gallery level has never been accessible to the public. Visitors can now access by way of a lift new galleries exhibiting treasures such as books from the Abbey’s 16th-century library, textiles, gold and silver plate, and rare documents.

Attingham Summer School ScholarshipA highly regarded three-week educational program in the English countryside, Attingham Summer School hosts numerous American scholars, curators, architects, and designers each year. The school has three main purposes: to examine the architectural and social history of the historic house in Britain along with its gardens and landscape setting; to study the contents of these buildings, as well as the planning, decorative treatment and use of the interiors; and to stimulate debate on problems relating to the conservation and preservation of the country house and its contents. Royal Oak’s grant of $20,000 supported scholarships to the summer school.

The Damaris Horan Prizewas established by The Mudge Foundation and named for Royal Oak’s Executive Director from 1987 to 2003. The Landscape History Fellowship is awarded bi-annually to provide talented Americans with a serious interest in landscape history and gardening a chance to experience the National Trust first-hand. Royal Oak is grateful to the Trust for offering this educational opportunity and to The Mudge Foundation for making these fellowships possible through its generous support.

Henry Horatio Joyce, recipient of the Stowe Landscape Garden Fellowship, focused his research on the social history of Stowe Landscape Garden, one of Europe’s most important and influential gardens. Phyllis Odessey was the recipient of the Sustainable Gardening at the National Trust Fellowship. The Fellow works with the National Trust to engage both its staff and its supporters in newly developed practices that are designed to be a model for sustainable management of both public and private gardens.
