Maine has more than 5,000 miles of coast and some of the most beau-tiful beaches in the entire state can be found here in the Kennebunks. Whether you’re a family looking to set up for that perfectly relaxing day at the beach or a surfer hoping to catch the ultimate wave, the beaches in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport offer some of the best fun in the sun. Kennebunk, Mother’s, Middle & Gooch’s beachesBeach Avenue, off routes 9 & 35These long, wide sandy beaches (and even rocky Middle Beach) are the perfect place to walk, sun yourself, play in the surf, look for sand dollars

or just enjoy the sight of the waves rolling into shore. There’s no bet-ter place to be on July 4th, when fireworks explode overhead in a myriad of glittering lights. There are lifeguards and porta-potties at both Gooch’s Beach and Mother’s Beach from July through Labor Day. As of June, Mother’s Beach will have a new playground open to the public.

While visitors are welcome at these beaches, a permit to park at the beach is required. Day, weekly and seasonal passes are easily available at the Chamber of Commerce, some local lodging establishments, and the Kennebunk Town Hall. Goose Rocks BeachKing’s Highway, off Route 9, north of Cape PorpoiseAt three miles long, Goose Rocks Beach is a favorite with walkers as well as the sand pail set. It’s wide, smooth and sandy, and affords wonderful views of Eastern Goose Rocks and Timber Island, just off the coast. Parking permits are required (note that Kennebunk permits cannot be used here) and are available at the Kennebunkport Police station, Town Hall, the Goose Rocks General Store and some accommodations. For more informa-tion and prices, call the Kennebunkport Police station at (207) 967-2454. Arundel BeachOff Ocean Avenue, near the Colony Hotel in KennebunkportThis beach (also known as Colony Beach) is much appreciated by those who love to scramble on its rocks and watch the surf dash the shore. No permit needed.

Walker’s point

TThe most common question we get at the Chamber is, “How do I get to Walker’s Point?”

The summer home of President George H.W. Bush, our 41st president, and wife Barbara, Walker’s Point has been visited by presidents, foreign heads of state and celebrities alike over the years.

More importantly, though, it has been a haven for generations of Bush family members, who have enjoyed idyllic summer days away from the pressures of the outside world.

Walker’s Point is not open to the public, but you can drive by, or stop briefly at the designated parking overlook to snap a quick picture. Vehicles may only stop in the designated area; stopping on the road is not permitted.

To get to Walker’s Point, take Ocean Avenue from Dock Square approximately two miles. The ride is beautiful in and of itself, with the Atlantic crashing against the rocks along the right side of the road.

Just before you reach Walker’s Point you’ll see the special overlook spot (please obey the rules posted on the sign) on the right. Also overlooking the compound and on the right is the “Anchor to Windward,” the town’s special tribute to “41” installed in 2009.

It bears a plaque with an inscription reading, “For our friend and 41st President George H.W. Bush. As he was for our nation and world during four years of tumultuous and historic change, so, too has Kennebunkport served, in the words of St. Paul, ‘as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stead’ to him. Presented by those who love him as much as he loves this special place.”

IBrick Store Museum, Kennebunk

In 1825, prominent Kennebunk resident William Lord began construction on a dry goods store on Main Street in Ken-nebunk — the very building that is today the focal point of the Brick Store Mu-seum. Although the brick exterior of the building remains relatively unchanged from the 19th century, the interior has been altered significantly. Evidence of the building’s past as a store still remains upstairs, however; a windlass (or pulley system) used to hoist heavy goods is vis-ible through a skylight.

The initial core of the museum’s collec-tions came from the Lords and related families, but the museum today is a re-gional history, art, and archives center.

The Brick Store Museum is open year round from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tues-day-Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Admission is by suggested donation of $5. Arundel history

Arundel was originally part of the area known as Cape Porpoise. Livelihoods were gained from fishing, farming, and building masts for ships. In 1820, Maine was separated from Massachu-setts and became a state. The first Maine Legislature approved the town’s request for a name change and Kennebunkport became the official name.

By the turn of the century, the farmers and others in the rural portions of the town felt they should not have to pay increased taxes to support services in the Cape Arundel area. The Legis-lature agreed to a separation, creating two towns, with the split becoming effective at the 1916 town meeting. The new municipality was called North Kennebunkport.

In 1957, the town voted to change its name to Arundel.

Located in the heart of the village, this gem of Greek revival architec-ture reflects the lives of the Perkins and Nott families whose fortunes were connected to the thriving shipbuilding era of Kennebunkport. The house was built in 1853, and original furnish-ings and French wallpaper reflect the luxurious living of the family.

White Columns is located at 8 Maine St., just outside of Dock Square, and is open during July and August, on weekends during Prelude, and other times by appointment.

The Wedding Cake House

Located in Kennebunk on the stately Summer Street, the build-ing of the house started in 1815 and lasted 10 years. At that time, it was given to George Washing-ton Bourne by his parents, as a wedding present. And it would come to be known as the Wed-ding Cake House.

The current owner is James Hunt Barker, only the second owner not to be a part of the original Bourne family.

While the Wedding Cake House is not open to the public, it is believed to be the most photo-graphed home in Maine.

Looking for a quiet place to take a stroll and experience a real New England town? Look no further than downtown Kennebunk. You’ll appreciate the benches, flowering baskets and pedestrian plaza while strolling along past unique shops, numerous eateries and lovely parks.

Downtown Kennebunk is where you’ll find the thriving Kennebunk Farmers Market from spring to fall and ice skating at the Main Street rink in the

winter. During the summer months, a shuttle runs from downtown to Lower Village. Free municipal parking is available at the former Garden Street Market parking lot, behind Perfecto’s and The Frame Works at the corner of Main and Grove streets and just behind the property next to the Kennebunk Inn.

IIn this vibrant section of town, located just a stroll across the bridge from Dock Square, you can find shops offering everything from souvenirs to surf boards and fabulous eateries specializing in cuisines from all over the globe. The accommodations range from upscale inns to comfortable hotels to private bed and breakfasts and rental homes.

Pause for a picture in front of the Kennebunk River Basin, or stroll the grounds of the serene Franciscan Monastery before heading farther down Beach Avenue to Kennebunk’s world-renowned beaches. Many of the annual Christmas Prelude events take place here. During the summer, a shuttle runs between Lower Village, the beaches and downtown Kennebunk.


Lower Village ArundelOne of the fastest-growing communities in Maine, Arundel is a blend of future-thinking enterprises and rural charm. It is

also home to the Arundel Barn Playhouse, where you can see up-and-coming talent perform in

plays all summer long, as well as numerous eateries and shops.

You can also access the Eastern Trail in Arundel (see our section on cycling/walking on page 41 for more details), find wonderful antique shops and enjoy stunning foliage on an autumn drive.

The heart of Kennebunkport, Dock Square is full of the bustle and energy that draws people to the Kennebunks. From here you can take a whale watch cruise, browse through dozens of unique shops and experience the world-class cuisine for which the region has become known.

Park on the street (be sure to obey the posted rules), in the pay-to-park municipal lot behind Alisson’s or at the free municipal lot on North Street next to the Village Fire Department and spend hours strolling, shopping and dining.

Just down Ocean Avenue from Dock Square you’ll find the Village Green, which is also home to Ganny’s Garden, a special spot dedicated to Barbara Bush. Among the plantings and statues you’ll find some donated by famous Bush friends, like Reba McEntire, as well as those chosen by family members.

Bush compound at Walker’s Point, just along Route 9, you’ll find the lovely village of Cape Porpoise. This authentic fishing village remains active to this day, with many lobstermen bringing in their catch here. Just across the harbor you’ll see Goat Island Light, a Kennebunkport Conservation Trust property currently being restored to its former glory.

If you plan to visit, bring a camera, because Cape Porpoise is among the most picturesque spots in Maine.

Scenic coastal views, rural back roads and friendly motorists make cycling (and walking or jogging) in the Kennebunks and Arundel a must do activity. Here are some beautiful rides (as well as wonderful places for a walk or run) sure to please beginners and experts alike.

Ocean Avenue and Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport (8 Miles) Head out of Dock Square on Ocean Ave with the water on your right. Ocean Avenue is heavily traveled so families with young children may want to take another route. You will be moving parallel to the Kennebunk River. Bear right at the Wildes District Fire Station and stay on Wildes District road all the way into Cape Porpoise. Backtrack your route back into town.

Goose Rocks Beach, Kennebunkport (11 Miles) From Dock Square take North Street to Arundel Road. Follow Arundel Road past the horse farm and take a right onto Goose Rocks Road. Ride Goose Rocks Road to the end. Stop and then cross Rt. 9. At the end of Dyke Road you will find the pristine Goose Rocks Beach. When it’s time to return follow the same roads back to town.

Kennebunk Beach, Kennebunk (7 Miles) From Dock Square, cross the bridge to the traffic light and take a left onto Beach Avenue. After a couple minutes you will see the Monastery. Please lock your bike when you enter, as bike riding is not allowed in the Monastery grounds. Continue down toward the beach by taking a left out of the Monastery back onto Beach Avenue. Follow the ocean for the next two miles. Where

the road heads away from the ocean you will see Great Hill Road on the left. This dead-end road borders the Mousam River. After you turn around take a left on to Boothby Road. This connects to Route 9 and will bring you back into the Port.

Eastern Trail The Eastern Trail, a 65-mile section of the East Coast Greenway stretching from Kittery to South Portland, has entrances

in both Kennebunk (at Kennebunk Elementary School off Alewive Road) and Arundel (on Limerick Road). The trail is perfect for walking and cycling

as well as snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing. The trail, which is approximately 10 feet wide, is also dog-friendly. For more information, as well as a map and trail rules, please see www.easterntrail.org.

Kennebunk Land Trust The Kennebunk Land Trust also offers scenic spots for walking, hiking and riding.

Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, Gravelly Brook Road Trails vary in length, width, topography and use. Some are conducive to bird watching and viewing wildlife, others for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. For more information, visit www.kporttrust.org.

Bridal Path, Kennebunk Flat dirt path about two miles long that parallels the Mousam River in Kennebunk. This is an excellent ride or walk for families. Park at Sea Road School on Sea Road for access.

Wonderbrook Park, Kennebunk Muddy, hilly, technical loops of interconnected trails. They are short but fun and include some bridge and log crossings. This is best combined with a road ride because of the short distance. Located at 16 Plummer Lane, off Summer Street.

TThe Kennebunks and Arundel share a common seagoing heritage, and that love of life on the water continues today. While fishermen daily make use of the region’s piers, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the beautiful rivers and ocean in the area.

Options include deep sea fishing tours, kayak and boat rentals, whale watching trips, lobster cruises, schooner rides and more. If surfing is more your speed, Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk is a popular spot, and surf and paddleboard rentals (not to mention wetsuits – Maine water can be chilly!) can be found nearby.

Dog-friendly

In Maine, we love our dogs and more and more establishments welcome them. There are dog-friendly inns and eateries, dog parks and, of course, opportunities to enjoy the beautiful beaches with your four-legged friends. A fenced-in dog park is available on Sea Road, next to the recycling center, in Kennebunk. In addition, dogs can use both the Kennebunk beaches as well as Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport. In Kennebunk, dogs are allowed on the beaches all day from Labor Day to June 15, and before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m. from June 15 to Labor Day. Owners must pick up after their dogs, and have their dogs under voice control at all times. At Goose Rocks Beach, dogs are

allowed on the beach before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m. from June 15 to Sept. 15. They are allowed on the beach all day the rest of the year. Leash and pick-up laws apply.
