The SS Yongala

The S.S. Yongala sank off Queensland on the 23rd of March, 1911.

She was en route from Melbourne to Cairns when she presumably was caught in a predicted cyclone and sank, losing all 122 souls onboard.

She wasn’t found until 1958.

She is 109 metres in length and rests in just 30 metres of water, with the top of the wreck sitting at 16 metres.

A ship of this significant size will require at least the 6 dives to explore thoroughly.

The Yongala has created a thriving artificial reef for any number of amazing schooling critters and marine growth.

Due to the tragic loss of the lives onboard, penetration of the wreck is strictly prohibited, as the inside of the ship is a grave at sea.

A note on weather:

The Yongala Shipwreck lies 12 nautical miles out to sea from Ayr. Because of the exposed nature of the wreck, we may experience a difficulties with weather.

The boat makes the decision on whether to dive at 4pm the day before. Cancellations are uncommon, however we can’t control the weather!

+ General Diving Rules

Obviously on all dive tours, safety is our main

concern. The quality of diving is guaranteed. We

must dive within our limits and stay safe.

The use of a computer, octopus and SMB are

mandatory in QLD. If you don’t have these, let us

know in advance and we will prepare them for you.

There is some spare rental gear at the dive centre,

however we strongly recommend that you have

your gear checked before the trip. Don’t take brand

new gear unless you’re absolutely sure it will

function adequately.

Quest Tours – Forster NSW Australia (Licence number: 2TA 10493)

We may be flying a different combination of airlines to ensure that our connections all work on all legs of our journey.

At this stage, we will be flying either Virgin or Qantas unless things change schedule wise.

If you choose to book your own flights, in the event of any schedule changes we will not be responsible for any punitive

charges that may be applied by other travel agents or airlines.

Tour costed at October, 2018. Quest Tours reserves the right to increase tour cost if airfares rise above costed

price. For more information on this please email us on [email protected]

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory on all of our tours. We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance at the same time as

paying your deposit. SureSave, our recommended insurance provider, will cover you at the time of taking out your policy

and until your tour’s return date. We suggest carefully checking conditions of any other travel insurance you may be

considering.

Please note that DAN Insurance do not cover you for things such as flight cancellations, lost baggage or similar. They only

cover you for diving related injuries. We recommend additional insurance to cover cancellations, airline changes and

baggage if you wish to use DAN.

We do recommend a DAN AP Membership, which covers the medical advice and evacuation of a dive holiday. Your regular

travel insurance will cover you once you hit land. Please visit this link to sign up for annual membership.
