CRAZY HORSE MEMORIAL - A Memorial to a Special Culture!

Crazy Horse Memorial is located in the heart of South Dakota’s beautiful Black Hills. The elevation on the Mountain is 6,532 feet above sea level and ranks as the 27th highest mountain in South Dakota. It was chosen by Sculptor Korczak Ziolowski & Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear the location of the memorial. The mission of Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation is to protect and preserve the culture, tradition and living heritage of the North American Indians.

BADLANDS - One of America’s Great National Parks

This striking South Dakota landscape boasts a maze of buttes, canyons, pinnacles and spires. Skeletons of three-toed horses and saber-toothed cats are among the many fossilized species found here. Wildlife abounds in the park’s 244,000 acres and can often be seen while hiking, camping and traveling the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway. Some describe it as "surreal" or "otherworldly," but the Native Americans were the first to call it "mako sica" or "bad lands."

MOUNT RUSHMORE NATIONAL MEMORIAL - Part of Our Nation’s History

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a massive sculpture carved into Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. Completed in 1941 under the direction of Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln, the sculpture's roughly 60-ft.-high granite faces depict U.S. presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. These four presidents were chosen by Borglum as representative of great events and/or historic achievements accomplishments during their presidencies.

DEVILS TOWER NATIONAL MONUMENT - The Nation’s First National Monument

Although located in Wyoming, it is a “must see” and easy drive from our hotel in South Dakota. It is the country’s first national monument and rises 867 feet above Wyoming’s rolling prairies. It is tower is sacred to many different Indian tribes, especially the Kiowa Tribe, who made their homes in the Black Hills region. With oral storytelling and a history that dates back thousands of years, today American Indian tribes continue to hold sacred ceremonies at the tower, including sweat lodges and sun dances.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Rapid City, South Dakota - Tour Begins Welcome to the West. Your tour opens in Rapid City, long known as the gateway to the Black Hills. Tonight, you and your fellow travelers gather for a welcome dinner featuring a Native American chronicler who shares stories about the Lakota and Sioux way of life. Dinner

Day 2 - Rapid City - Crazy Horse - Mt. Rushmore - Rapid City Learn the history of enterprising Westerners at the Chapel in the Hills. Visit Crazy Horse Memorial and delve into the story of the largest, still-in-progress mountain sculpture. Visit the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Cultural Center, the sculptor’s studio, orientation center and theaters. Continue to Mount Rushmore. Spend time with the epic figures of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln as you stroll along the Presidential Trail, offering the closest view of this iconic sculpture. This evening, return to Mount Rushmore for the nighttime lighting ceremony. Breakfast

Day 3 - Rapid City - Badlands - Wall - Rapid City Embrace the allure of wide-open spaces and explore the larger-than-life Badlands National Park. At the visitor center, the stage is set for your adventure, with informative exhibits, displays and video to introduce you to the area. Travel the Badlands Loop Road, home to vibrant colors and rock formations created by mineral deposits. Visit the legendary Wall Drug, a store barely changed since 1936. Do a little browsing, have a seat at the soda fountain, and perhaps grab a bite for lunch. Breakfast

Day 4 - Rapid City - Deadwood - Rapid City Get ready for Deadwood, where gold, gambling, and gunpowder were once the order of the day. This National Historic Landmark comes alive as if you’ve stepped onto the set of an old-fashioned Western. A local guide shows you to the city, including where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. Enjoy free time before it’s your choice! Take a guided tour of the Adams House, dedicated to preserving Deadwood’s history -OR- visit Kevin Costner’s Tatanka: Story of the Bison, sculptures depicting the relationship between bison and the Lakota. This evening, enjoy a dinner and Western show at the High Plains Heritage Center. Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 – Rapid City - Custer State Park - Rapid City Head to Custer State Park and keep your eyes peeled for bighorn sheep or wandering elk. Take in the lush landscape, rocky outcrops, and grazing animals as you make your way through South Dakota’s first state park. Venture off road with an exciting Buffalo Safari, cruising deep into the park in an open-air jeep and searching for herds of roaming buffalo. Breakfast
