 The Carmel River is a special environment that provides vital habitat for a diversity of plants and animals, as well as a place for people to connect with nature.  Experience Carmel River-where nature and people connect  THE SOUTH BANK TRAIL Experience Carmel River is a vibrant, community-based program that will saeguard the Carmel River into the uture. Trough the eforts o Te Big Sur Land rust and its key partners, a number o the program’s important goals have been reached. One important milestone is the opening in Fall 2011 o the South Bank rail, which now ofers local communities the opportunity to reconnect to the Carmel River and to Palo Corona Regional Park, one o the region’s most iconic landscapes. Part o the Land rust’s strategic commitment to build long-term support or the river’s protection and restoration, the South Bank rail begins at Rancho San Carlos Road and heads 1.5 miles west to the boundary o Palo Corona Regional Park. his beautiully scenic trail, open to everyone, begins on a private arm road, then meanders o the road to meet the river beore gently climbing onto pasture land where it meets the boundary o Palo Corona Regional Park. As you enjoy the trail, please be mindul and respectul o the natural wonders around you and ollow these important steps. W ell-mannered dogs are welcome on the South B ank ra il; however dogs must be leashed at all times and you are responsible to pick up and dispose o their waste. Horses are not allowed on the South Bank  rail. Stay on the p ublic paved trail at all times. Pedestrians and cyclists share the trail, so please be aware o others. Leave no trace: pack it in, pack it out. Y ou are responsibl e or your own trash. Use th e South Bank rail at your own risk. CONNECTING WITH P ALO CORONA REGIONAL P ARK No permit is required to use the South Bank rail; however a daily permit is required to pass through the trail’s west gate into Palo Corona Regional Park. o request a permit, contact Monter ey Peninsula Regional Park at (831) 372-3196, or at www .mprpd.org. Please note tha t Palo Corona Regional Park is open dawn to dusk and that no dogs, horses or bicycles are allowed inside the park. A bike rack is provided at the terminus o the South Bank  rail so that those entering the park can saely leave their bikes behind or later pick up. NEXT STEPS Experience Carmel River has attracted growing attention rom property owners along the river. As we advance in our goals, the Land rust looks orward to continuing our work with local landowners and communities to plan or extending access to and enjoyment o the river.
