AnoxKaldnes is the leading global supplier of biological wastewater treatment solutions. We are the originators of the world-renowned MBBR Biofilm technology and for more than 20 years have set the industry standard for research and development within our field. The Moving Bed Biofilm technology is the core of many of our solutions. The microorganisms treating the wastewater are grown on the surfaces of a carrier material in the treatment reactor. The flexibility of our patented technology allows existing conventional activated sludge plants to be easily upgraded for nutrient removal using existing reactors available rather than building new concrete basins. Although we invented the MBBR Biofilm technology, we do not rest on past glory. Our research and development facilities are leading the way in designs for biofilm, activated sludge, anaerobic treatment, nutrient removal, bioplastics and thermophilic processes. We are the pioneers with a passion for environmental water protection worldwide.

Reverse osmosis is a cost-effective alternative to the traditional distillation method when doing desalination of seawater and brackish water. The only energy needed is high pressure to force the water through the semi-permeable membrane. The highest possible efficiency of these reverse osmosis pumps (high pressure feed pumps) are therefore essential in the aim for low-cost potable water production. Tens of thousands of pumps are in operation worldwide, proving the pumps to be among the most cost-effective and reliable pumps for membrane applications. The pumps are used as main high-pressure pumps for reverse osmosis plants but also for recovering energy as reversing pumps (motors) in the reject line. The reverse osmosis pumps are made in duplex and super-duplex stainless steel as standard. With the Danfoss reverse osmosis pumps you get the following benefits: low energy consumption, long service life, corrosion resistance, high-pressure operation, wide flow range and low pulsation. The most compact reverse osmosis pump on the market. Danfoss A/S RO-Solution, can supply all reverse osmosis pumps with ATEX approval mounted with EX-proof Zone II motors via stainless steel housing for offshore applications. membranes due to its unique “7-hole-structure” which provides 100% security against membrane breakage. The technology assures complete rejection of bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms. Unlike other widely used water treatment technologies, such as sand fi ltration and ultra-violet-irradiation, inge ultrafi ltration guarantees complete disinfection without using chemicals such as chlorine. Ultrafi ltration provides an absolute barrier for all particles of a size greater than (10-20nm). Over the last few years, ultrafi ltration has gained wide acceptance as the best method to ensure safe drinking water supplies without the use of toxic chemicals. The primary fi elds of application for ultrafi ltration treatment plants are treatment of surface and well water to high quality standards for use as drinking or process water, treatment of wastewater for reuse, pre-treatment of reverse osmosis processes, especially seawater desalination. The users of inge technology are widespread and include municipalities and industrial companies that require high purity water.

Japan EnviroChemicals is the largest manufacturer of activated carbons in Japan. A parent company, Osaka Gas Chemicals, specialises in carbon fibre based active carbons, widely used for water purifiers. Japan EnviroChemicals also developed ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) test kits, Ecologiena ELISA kit series, for detecting pollutants in water such as surfactants, endocrine-disrupting chemicals and female hormones. For the determination of pollutants in river or wastewater, instrumental analysis such as GC-MS or LC-MS is generally employed. These analytical methods are highly reliable but have several potential drawbacks including expensive instrumentation, large sample volume, extensive purification and technical expertise in operation. Due to these shortcomings, the analysis of a large number of samples may be both cost- and time-prohibitive. ELISA is a rapid, simple and cost-effective tool for environmental monitoring at “ng/mL (ppb)” or “ng/L (ppt) level”.

It produces different types of premix and expanded clay building materials. maxit also produces the expanded clay filter media, Filtralite. Filtralite is a very porous filter media developed especially for treatment of water and wastewater. The porosity of the material results in a large surface area that is ideal for bacteria to grow on in biological filters. Filtralite also has extremely good properties for use in filters for particle retention. Due to the porosity Filtralite provides low initial head loss, slow head loss buildup and high storage capacity resulting in long filter runs. Compared to traditional filter media the use of Filtralite can result in 25–30% longer filter runs. Filtralite is produced in different densities and sizes to fit different types of applications.

Most of the world water problems, such as flooding, drought, river water quality, disasters and energy inefficiency, are related to rainwater. These problems can be mitigated by proactive and multi-purpose management of rainwater to meet the Millennium Development Goals for developing countries and achieve sustainability in developed nations. The Rainwater Research Centre (RRC) was established in 2002 at Seoul National University in collaboration with the Korean Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (KRCSA) to promote the recognition and value of rainwater through research activities and working along with NGOs. Successful promotion has resulted in an improved understanding of the present scientific and engineering aspects and several cities in Korea, including Seoul, have adopted rainwater regulations emphasising its proper management for future development. The IWA Specialist Group for Rainwater Harvesting and Management will start working from 2006 to promote the idea worldwide. These activities will be carried out with the financial assistance of BK21 Safe and Sustainable Infrastructure Research: international rainwater harvesting demonstration project, publication of international textbooks and brochures about rainwater management, organisation of international workshops and seminars and training of expert groups and students worldwide. Interested researchers and students from around the world are welcome to work jointly with RRC.

The World Health Organization (WHO) works on aspects of water, sanitation and hygiene where the health burden is high, where interventions could make a major difference and where the present state of knowledge is poor. The work of its Water, Sanitation and Health Programme includes articulating evidence-based policy positions, assessing trends, setting the research agenda, providing technical support, leading international partnerships, setting norms and standards and stimulating the development and testing of new technologies, tools and guidelines. Key focus areas include drinking water quality, through WHO’s Guidelines and networks addressing small community water supplies, household water management and drinking water regulators. WHO, along with UNICEF, lead work on the Joint Monitoring Programme, which is responsible for measuring progress towards the MDGs for water and sanitation. Another stream of work is assessing the cost and benefits of water-related interventions and building capacity in health impact assessment to better plan water resource developments. At the 4th IWA World Water Congress in Marrakech in 2004, WHO launched the 3rd Edition of the Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality. WHO is following up on this success by launching the Guidelines on the Safe Use of Wastewater, Excreta and Greywater at the 2006 Congress in Beijing.
