Four years ago Chris rekindled his interest in art, years after graduating from the Royal College of Art with a Masters degree. As a form of therapy he has worked daily, focusing on a subject until the inspiration is exhausted, then moving on to another genre. Chris’s aspiration is ‘… to appeal to all ages and creeds and hopefully demystify the language of art to the lay person’. Chris’s artworks are for sale with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK.

Herefordshire Life Through a Lens: The PhotosBy Catcher MediaFebruary 8 - March 21 Hereford Museum & Art Gallery FREE

Tuesday - Friday 10am-4pm, Saturday 10am-12.30pm

An exhibition of photographic gems from the Derek

Evans archive collection. Focusing on priceless scenes

from Herefordshire Life from 1940s-1970s, the

exhibition gives people a chance to “get up close and

personal” with Derek’s actual exhibition prints created

in his studio a few doors down on the third floor of

No.43, Broad Street, many of which haven’t been seen

for over 50 years, and which still look stunning.

Catcher Media will be exhibiting in five venues

across Hereford: Hereford Museum & Art Gallery,

the Courtyard, Hereford Cathedral, HARC &

Hereford College of Arts from Feb-April 2020. The

photographic trail continues around the county in

Ledbury, Ross, Kington & Leominster libraries. For

Can you imagine mammoths roaming Herefordshire? Or a landscape on the edge of a massive ice sheet? How long did the Ice Age last and did people live here? Come and find the answers, discover the stories about King Arthur’s Cave and meet a life size mammoth model. Plenty for the family to explore including a child friendly science lab, making a cave painting, dressing up as wolf or reindeer, and helping to create a baby woolly mammoth!

An exhibition developed by Worcester Museums has been recreated here with a Herefordshire focus. It features the bones of extinct animals, animals that survived the Pleistocene Ice Age, and artefacts made by early humans. It outlines the geology and landscape of Ice Age Herefordshire and beyond, including investigating the remains of Herefordshire’s Ice Age Ponds. Artwork created by students at Hereford College of Arts brings things up to date with their exploration of the meaning and effect of modern day Climate Change.

A city trail and details about a range of activities and events can be found on our Family Events page, website and Facebook pages.

Midcentury Modern: the Art of the FiftiesCurated by Richard Turkington, FRSANovember 14 - December 12 Hereford Museum & Art Gallery FREE

Tuesday-Friday 10am-4pm,

Saturday 10am-12.30pm

The 1950s are associated with a grey austerity in the difficult adjustment to peace after the Second World War. Artists played their part in a changing world, placing more emphasis on everyday domestic and urban scenes; in the continued development of abstraction and in the greater use of printmaking to extend ‘art for all’. This exhibition captures the range of work produced in the 1950s, encouraging us to look again at a neglected period in the production of art. It will include works by established artists such as John Piper and Henry Moore but also the less well-known, especially women artists. Most of the artworks will be available to purchase.

Richard Turkington is the Director of Fifties Art and shows regularly through exhibitions and art fairs, his collection is can be viewed at www.fiftiesart.com

Neolithic and Early Bronze Age Bronze Age and Neolithic Finds from Dorstone and other sites will be available for viewing.

Derek Evans’s pre-digital world of photo-journalism, with Keith James Thursday 5 March 10am-12pm

Spring Workshop at the Museum Resource & Learning Centre

£12.00 Booking required

Talks and tours

‘If a Hereford express train couldn’t reach a Fleet Street deadline, the “wire-men” were called in. These were the hard men of The Street who had heard it all, seen it all and you wouldn’t risk dragging them a hundred and forty miles to Hereford with a dead-donkey of a story.’

Hereford photographer Derek Evans had his studio on BroadStreet. He was a photographer with an instinct for journalism - finding a story, covering it with “stills” or film and selling it. With first-hand knowledge of both the fast paced studio and the man, Keith James is well equipped to shed light on Evans’ amazing archive of local imagery and his photo-journalistic legacy. A selection of the studio photographic equipment will be made accessible for study. This workshop coincides with the exhibitions ‘Herefordshire Life through a Lens: The Photos’ at Hereford Museum & Art Gallery, the Courtyard, Hereford Cathedral, HARC & Hereford College of Arts Feb 8th - March 21st

Wall paintings in 17th century English houses, with Stephen Rickerby and Lisa ShekedeFriday 13 March - 10am-12pm Spring Workshop at the Museum Resource & Learning Centre £12.00 Booking required

The Black and White House Museum in Hereford, displays two wall paintings that were rescued from a nearby property in Widemarsh Street in 1947. Dating to c.1600, they illustrate scenes from the Biblical story of Joseph and Pharaoh. In late 2018 the paintings were conserved and cleaned.

Technical findings from the conservation programme will be presented to show that extremely rich paint materials were originally used. The paintings will also be placed in their wider context, alongside other examples that have survived in houses throughout the country. There will be an opportunity to view some of the materials and tools that were used in the treatment of the paintings, and to look at the types of paint materials that the original artist would have used.

Spring workshops are organised by Hereford Culture Club. For information and a booking form please contact Chris Lansberry on 01432 860733 or [email protected]
