Look at this pictures of the greatest artist of Great Britain, William Blake. He is one of the most inspired and original painters of his time. Blake’s engraving reflects his interest in early British history and legend. For Blake engraving was an art form in itself.

His follower, Thomas Lawrence, was called the last of the greatest portrait painters in the 18-th century tradition. He became famous for painting the British

Royal family. He was personal king’s artist. Besides, he also drew portraits of many aristocrats, writers, actors and other prominent people. In his way of

drawing he perfected the art of showing the outer features of his characters. In 1820, he was the head of the Royal Academy of Art.

William Turner was a very humanistic person who fought for the rights of slaves.

At that time Great Britain had many colonies.

And rich people could sell and buy slaves.In his pictures Turner expressed his procla-mation of freedom for slaves and many of his paintings are devoted to this topic. As an example you can see here “The SlaveShip”.

William Hogarth is famous for his portrayals of human weaknesses. His pictures are a bit ironical and show us episodes

(often not pleasant) from the life of usual people.

Of course, such pictures were not popular among rich people; that’s why to earn money for living he sometimes drew portraits of aristocrats.

John Constable represent the beginning of the 19th century. He was valued for his beautiful masterpieces, mostly landscapes. He invented his own style,

which was similar to da Vinci’s one. Constable liked to make the front view of his pictures darker for spectators to focus more attention on the background

view.

The later period of the British art is represented by Walter Sadler, one more brilliant portraitist. He has always been admired for the

realism and attention to detail that is apparent in his works.

Many of Sadler's paintings have been

reproduced by later artists.
