Oct. 30, 1984IIis FxceI lencyThe ltost Rcvc rend .Iohn R . Roach, D . D .Archbishop of Sa j nt Paul and i\f inneapol is226 .Sunrnrit venucSaint Paul, i\fn 5:1101-1197Derr,\rchbislrop Roercir,It goes rvithout saying that I share your regrets that the efforts you andBishop Carlson have made over the years to help Father Thomas Adamson, a priestof this diocese, did not elicit more cooperation from hirn.f am tery sorry that Father Adamsonts many talents continue to be conpromised.because of his involvement with juvenile males; and all the more so now tht hisrresponsible conduct has now betone a matter of public record.

As you will recall, when I asked you to consider helping Father Adanson inJanuary of 1975 I indicated that I could no longer ask him to accept pastoral re-sponsibility in the Winona Diocese because of this sane t)?e of prbtm. Eventhough the matter had not become part of the public recoxd, I iniisted that FatherAdamson seek professional help in a residental program. When he did not cooperatein it I asked him to cornplete his work at the University of Minnesota for an M.A.in marriage counceling. ft was at that point that you expressed a willingness tohelp Father Adanson with the understanding that he would e in regular cotact withFather Pierre.f am writing to Father Adamson today and asking him to come to see rne withinthe next week. As you and Bishop Carlson recomnend, I will certainly require himto complete a residential program of considerable length before even consideringan attempt to help him return to pastoral ministry. I know that it is still im-possible for him to accept an appointment in this diocese. If it would be of any help, I would be willing to recall Father Adanson beforeJanuart 1, 1985. And on the other hand, he night r.ant to leave Risen Savior assoon as he can.Again, Archbishop Roach, I am most grateful to you and Bishop Carlson forthe continuing efforts you nade to help Father Adamson as well as for your prayersfor him.Ittith kindest personal greetings and sincere gratitude, I rcmain,
