EXETER LIVESTOCK CENTRE
MARKET REPORT
December 2017
Tuesday 19th TB Restricted Sale
A small entry for our November restricted sale still mirrored regular markets with Store Cattle rising to £1060 for a
strong South Devon steer (27m) from John Reddaway & Sons of Moretonhampstead. Younger sorts off the same farm
saw £925 (x2) whilst super run of stores from James Warren, St Buryan reached £900 for a solid looking Limousin steer
(16m) followed by a bunch of three Blue bullocks of a similar age at £860, an amount also attained by Colin Wakeham,
Buckfastleigh with a couple of smart Charolais steers (16m). Colin also saw the best of his Charolais heifers (18m) to
£780. Younger store cattle from Myles & Helen Partridge, Poundsgate looked a decent price with their trio of outlying
South Devon steers (14m) fetching £810 apiece. Just a few Barren Cows on offer with South Devons selling to 123ppk
for AJ & JA Talbot, Spreyton and 118ppk and £965 for Jonathan Lentern of Chagford.
Our next ‘Orange Market’ sale of cattle from TB restricted holdings at Exeter will be held on Tuesday 23rd January 2018 with entries for licensing closing on Tuesday 16th January.

High pressure continues to dominate the country bringing with it cold, but dry weather, very much
needed if you are currently busy in the lambing pens. That said, the forecast is suggesting northerly
winds for the weekend, could snow be a feature for December?
Commodity prices seem to be holding their own, with both barley and wheat prices remaining
strong. Straw prices seem to be one of the main talking points, providing positive vibes for the
arable farmers, yet a little more frustrating for the livestock farmers amongst you having to use
the stuff.
Onto Basic Payment Scheme matters and some good news for a change. As returning from work
on Friday the 1st of December I was pleasantly informed that the home farm had received the
annual Basic Payment Scheme income and furthermore throughout the weekend it was clear that
many clients had also received the required payment. If you haven’t received anything yet, don’t
panic, it is understood the RPA are aiming to make payments to at least 90% of BPS claimants
(around 77,400) by the 31st of December.
With regards to the size of the payment there is further good news here too. It is understood
payments for the 2017 claim year should be just under 5% higher than the 2016 claim period due
to a more beneficial conversion rate from the Euro to the Pound. An increase that will be a
welcome boost to farmers across the country.
Here at Exeter we are busy submitting full and final claims against one large utility company for
clients that have been affected by works on the electrical pylons leading from Plymouth to Exeter.
It’s worth mentioning that if you experience any damage or losses as a result of any utility company
entering your land to undertake improvements or repairs to apparatus you are entitled to claim
for the losses you have incurred.
Throughout autumn, the professional team at Kivells have been busy receiving instructions on
various sales of land, buildings and residential property. We have seen our Exeter office build from
