Prevail Background
Prevail is a leader in innovative, technology-based behavior
change and behavioral health care for a wide range of
disorders from depression to PTSD to substance abuse to
weight maintenance. Prevail partnered with the National
Science Foundation, leading mental health clinicians, and
researchers to build our next generation technology. The Prevail platform was originally built for
and validated in military and veteran populations who are arguably the most difficult individuals to
get to participate and adhere to mental health treatment programs, and has proven clinically
effective for parameters which are likely to reduce cost. The platform has also:
Demonstrated clinical efficacy equivalent to traditional care in randomized controlled trials
conducted with Rush University Medical Center and funded by the Bristol Myers Squibb
Foundation.
Achieved high levels of engagement during ongoing national delivery to the Veterans Health
Administration with more than 30,000 program Users.

PREVAIL USER EXPERIENCE
Prevail’s Structured Programs are systematic online behavioral health interventions rooted in
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and peer support. The model was developed under a series of
NSF grants, in collaboration with researchers and clinicians at the University of Chicago,
Northwestern University, Rush University Medical Center, and the Beck Academy of Cognitive

The first step to helping Users deal with these issues is engaging them. Most current online
approaches fail to create engagement, at least in part, because they are generic. There is nothing
generic about to today’s users. Although they all share many common bonds they also each have
unique experiences and suffer from specific problems. To combat these unique problems, the
Prevail model serves up content which is customized at the individual level to ensure personal
relevance. In addition the program can be customized to focus on the most widespread problem
areas among Users, and can route into the specific resources that your organization already makes
available.

Numerous technology-based features allow Prevail to serve not only as a structured online CBT
program, but also as an ecosystem of User and Peers helping other Users. Fully mobile
compatible, hundreds of thousands of Users have availed themselves to this ecosystem to interact
with our online communities to receive support and guidance. For many Users, these initial
community based interactions are an essential first step to get otherwise reluctant care seekers to

adherence. The Peer role may also be filled by your organization’s existing personnel if

SCIENTIFIC RATIONALE BEHIND PREVAIL MODEL
The Prevail model unites cutting edge technology with clinically valid behavioral science. In the
Institute of Medicine framework, Prevail is an indicated prevention program for pre-clinical PTSD
and depression symptoms, a vehicle for case identification and initiating the treatment process, and
a means of redressing stigma for those Users who may need subsequent specialty care.
The programs clinical efficacy has been validated in an Institutional Review Board-approved clinical
trial conducted by a physician at the University of Chicago; results were published in the VA Journal
of Rehabilitation Research and Development. The trial validated both benefits of the model: direct
reduction in symptoms of behavioral health issues and improved attitudes toward health care
options (see Figure 7 and Figure 8). Results from a Phase II clinical trial, conducted at Rush, were
published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. The trial validated that Prevails CBT
treatment model decreases the symptoms of depression and PTSD with the same effectiveness as
face-to-face CBT treatment but for 1% of the cost.

PROGRAM DELIVERY
Specifics of the Program Implementation
There are two separate landing pages that Users can start their Prevail journey from to the
Program Landing Page and the IM Peer Chat Landing Page.
Program Landing
Studies show that many Users in your population suffer from
MH conditions and related issues, yet are reluctant to seek
care under traditional care regimes. Prevail is an alternative
option for them.
Users would enter Prevail, either from Prevail’s proprietary
User acquisition methods or from a unique button on your
existing organization’s User facing website. The first step in the User flow for this model would be
to engage with Prevail’s virtual assistant to take an initial need assessment. This assessment
would ask a series of questions related to demographics and issues, and would include one or more
clinical assessments based dynamically on a User’s answers.
Once the assessment is complete the User would be offered program variants based on their
specific profile and needs. Additionally, Users could be directed to specific resources based on this
initial assessment through a custom task called Guided Resources, or the User could be connected
with a peer coach to chat about the assessment immediately. Please see Appendix A for a depiction
of the User flow from this entry point.
IM Peer Chat Landing Page
Our experiences with tens of thousands of Users have shown
that many Users want immediate engagement with Prevail’s
Trained Peer Specialists. One point of entry into Prevail
programs will be a click to chat approach, whereby pressing a
single button, e.g., on your current organization website homepage, links Users to Prevail’s Trained
Peer Specialists. This Peer Chat front end serves as the entry point to Prevail’s comprehensive
programs for some portion of Users that utilize it.

User acquisition would be accomplished through an Instant Message based peer chat facing front
end. Users would be directed (via a link on your existing organization’s User facing website and/or
Prevail’s proprietary User acquisition methods) to a specific chat landing page. In two simple clicks
Users could connect immediately and anonymously with a peer to discuss any issues they may
have.
This model has several key benefits:
The value is clear to the User
It is malleable. Peers could act as triage counselors in addition to their support role
Text-based open chats allow for tremendous real time data acquisition, which could be used
to both identify Users with potential emergent issues as well as better match Users with
specific programs and indicate outcomes
After the initial chat, Prevail’s algorithms would identify Users who might potentially benefit from
Prevail, and route those Users accordingly. Users who choose to take this referral and continue
into Prevail’s enrollment User flow would begin at the first step of the Program Landing Page flow
above. Please see Appendix A for a depiction of the User flow for this starting point.
Integration & Customization
For User populations in excess of 25,000, Prevail will create a co-
labeled version of the platform that would serve as a web asset
that could be accessed via a link on existing company web assets,
or serve as a stand-alone virtual storefront.
This would start with a unique customized version of our various landing pages, including a chat
landing page, which would serve as the first step in the Prevail platform. The goal would be to
adjust the look, feel, and messaging of these pages to give the User a seamless transition from your
existing web assets. Thereafter all platform pages would share the same overall look/feel and
messaging, so that Users are exposed to a consistent experience in line with your branding and
standards. There are several options available to identify Users for reporting and tracking
purposes, and Prevail would work with you to establish the simplest acceptable first step.
At your option, Prevail could also be tasked with acquiring Users on its own, utilizing social media
strategies honed over years of veteran acquisition and engagement. This is a unique capability and

it represents a true differentiator in the behavioral health marketplace. Prevail could be further
integrated into your other mental health or broader health services. Prevail's flexible platform also
offers the option for further customization and integration into additional services, e.g., tele-
psychiatry, customized clinical and non-clinical assessments, and tailored language and visuals to
name a few.
Data Reporting
Prevail’s programs capture large amounts of detailed clinical and
engagement data that allows us to report effectively in real-time on
Users symptoms and clinical progress. Each point of User engagement
coaching sessions, assessments, interactive lessons, community, etc.
generates data and insights into the Users state of mind, symptoms, and emerging clinical needs.
The resulting data profile is what allows the platform to tailor each Users experience and to triage
Users to the best available resources.
Prevail will use this data to report key insights to you on a quarterly basis. We will report on User
engagement and key metrics, per the terms of Prevail’s standard Service Level Agreement (SLA).
In general, our standard reports focus on the following areas:

and then route those Users to our program, and we will report on the implementation and
success of these efforts.

and claims data, as well as your existing analytic capabilities, to document quantitatively the
improved clinical and economic outcomes delivered by Prevail’s programs.

capability for your organization that could improve accessibility to care, triaging Users to the best
