• Served for 1 yr.• Took care of streets, public buildings, temples, markets . . .• Maintained public order: e.g. organised the registration of prostitutes.• Assisted by 1 scribe, 4 public slaves, a town-crier, a flute-player and a haruspex (like a Roman priest).

Council • Made up of 80 – 100 leaders of the community.• Honourable, freeborn citizens. Wealthy + over 25yrs old.• Other citizens could be appointed by the duumviri.• Settled community debts from their private funds.• Decisions written into the archives, important ones onto bronze.• Dealt with matters of city finance, religious authority etc.• Were allowed to wear a purple-edged toga.• Had reserved seats at public performances.• Displayed fasces (symbols of power).• Were members for life.• Actors and innkeepers excluded.
