From Vicar’s Desk

“If any person will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (St. Luke 9:23).

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

Greetings.

We are in the season of Great Lent. Lent is a call from God to us

to come back to Him. It is a time to do something to get close to God. It is a

season of repentance and renewal. This year our theme for Lent season is

“Discipleship: a journey to embrace the cross.” Pope Francis said, “When

we build without the cross and when we proclaim Christ without the cross,

we are not disciples of the Lord. We are worldly. We may be Bishops, Priests, Cardinals, Popes, all of

this, but we are not disciples of the Lord.”

The dedication of the executive committee for 2019 was held on March 2nd Sunday. Let us

remember them in our prayers. I appreciate them for taking the responsibility and pray that may our good

Lord strengthen and bless them to do the entrusted ministry.

The pillars of the Parish rests upon the shoulders of the six area prayer groups. Prayer groups are exten-

sions of our Parish and the leaders of each group play a very important role in reaching out to their mem-

bers. I appreciate all the prayer group representatives for their sincere efforts and support.

Our Parish, The Ascension Family is privileged to host the Senior Fellowship National confer-

ence in September 2019. I request your prayers and wholehearted support. All the members above the age

of 50 register as early as possible by paying 100 dollars and attend the conference. We need compliments

in souvenir, we need your houses to accommodate the members and clergy coming from far places, dona-

tions and full-time presence. As Ascension family let us come together and make this conference a grant

success.

Let us create a new culture in giving. Let us make sure to set apart at least the tithe (1/10)

from our gross income and give it to our parish for its various ministries. It is high time to increase our

monthly subscription to an average of 75 Dollars without compulsion. Those families whose gross earn-

ing is more than 100 thousand a year can easily contribute 100 dollars a month. Let us increase our Sun-

day offerings to at least 2 dollars and above, Head of the family can offer 5 dollars and also start a new

practice of giving a minimum of 50 and above for Birthdays and Wedding Anniversaries.

The month of April is set apart as MISSION MONTH. Those who set apart money for charity

by fasting during the LENT can donate to this account and that will be specifically used for helping the

needy. So many genuine applications are pending due to the lack of funds, like mission field needs, evan-

gelists’ children education, medical aid for cancer patients and others, marriage aid, education aid for

nursing students etc.

One-year plan of our Parish is ready. Save the important days and make sure to prayerfully

participate. As per our Diocesan Bishop’s Kalpana, Rev.Prince Varghese Madathileth is our Youth Chap-

lain from July 15 2019. His tenure will be over by April 30, 2019. I take this opportunity to thank Prince

Achen for his services, especially for taking classes in the Youth fellowship meetings, Young Family

fellowship and Sunday school. Special thanks to Candy Kochamma and Zephan,. On behalf of Ascension

Marthoma Church I wish all the best in his ministry and studies. New Youth chaplain will be posted from

May 2019. I Welcome Achen and family to Ascension family.

The foundation of our faith is Jesus’ resurrection. Every Sunday worship is an occasion to

proclaim that the Lord Jesus is risen.

He is risen! He is risen!

From Youth Chaplain’s Desk

Dear brothers and sisters of Philadelphia Ascension Mar Thoma Church,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Psalms 62: 5

One of the largest aircrafts in the world is the Antonov An-124. It is so huge that it is used

for military transportation or cargo. It is powered by four engines and use twenty-four wheels for

landing. It can carry battle tanks, earth movers, oil tankers even small planes, thanks to its cavernous

interiors. But the one major thing about AN 124s is that, it has to be serviced after flying for every

7500 hours, which is a very short time compared to other planes. They will have to flown to Ukraine

to its service facility and servicing these huge planes might even take months together. But that is the

mantra. Larger planes, more frequent service.

The Psalmist says my soul finds rest in God. Rest here is that bliss when you spend time

with God. It is that time frame of ‘being lost’ in God. Jesus himself travelled the length of breadth

of Palestine on foot or by boat. He made it a point to climb mountains for that periodical service

(Matt 14: 23, 26: 36; Mk 1: 35; 6: 46; 14: 39). Paul says, do not forget to “pray without ceasing” (1

Thessalonians 5: 17). We live in a very busy world, where time is the most precious commodity. We

undertake many responsibilities, at our work places and homes. Some of us travel great distances to

get work done and meet many people in a single day. Pressing deadlines and the stress associated

with it can be enormous. Not to forget the constant sounds of our gadgets, either calls, or notifica-

tions. One single day can be quite a lot.

But we must ask do we service ourselves at the feet of our Master? The ground rule is that, the more

the time you spend with God, the better effective and virtuous you will be. The more you drag your-

self delaying the service, or spending a namesake of a time before God, we may be staring at defeat

and disillusionment. As we enter the Great season of Lent, let us remember that it is a period of

disciplining and discovery. Let us seek to spend more quality time with God. Thereupon, may we

discover new energy and direction for our onward journey. May we have a blessed Lenten season.

I shall be visiting your parish on April 14th, Sunday for Holy Communion service. I shall

be leading the Youth Fellowship Bible Study on April 5th, Friday. We shall looking at “Christian

Denomination” during that fellowship. I encourage the youths of your parish to attend this wonderful

fellowship and strengthen the pillars of our church. I will also be visiting your church for some of

the evening Lent services in April, including the 40th Friday Holy Communion service on April 12th.

We will have the Spring Conference of the South East Region Youth Fellowship on April 20th, Sat-

urday at the Christos Mar Thoma Church. Requesting the prayers and prayers of the youths for this

conference.

Nothing happens by chance, everything happens for a reason. I thank God for giving me

an opportunity to serve as the interim Youth Chaplain since August 2018. It was a great experience

and opportunity to observe, learn and lead the activities among the youths and young families during

this period. The Fall Conference hosted by your parish and Youth Fellowship was a blessed event. I

congratulate and thank you for the wonderful manner in which you hosted the event. Our family is

grateful to all of you for your constant prayers, encouragement and loving support. Though it was for

a short span of time, I am grateful for the friendships and memories. I am sure that the new Youth

Chaplain and his family, with the gifts and leadership they bring, will help this ministry will grow

from strength to strength.

The message of Easter is of hope, renewal and new life. Jesus Christ our Lord, defeated death and

has risen! Yes! He is risen! Wishing you a blessed Easter in advance!

Monthly subscription Renewal

Vicar and Executive committee members will visit our families from March

15th to June 15th 2019

All families of the parish shall pay monthly subscription and $150

offertory without pending.

We need an average of $40,000 a month for running our parish.

Dues of all families will be carry forwarded and will be shown in the Annual

Report.

Subsidy from Church for active members in using the rental facilities will be

given to those members who fully comply (paid the complete dues till the

date) with the financial responsibilities towards the church.
