report. It has been decided the March 9, 2020 Membership meeting will be

held at the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 5700 Dallas Parkway (at the

North East corner of the North Dallas Tollway and Lebanon).

2020-2021 Officer elections will be held during the June 2020 Membership

meeting. The Nominations Committee will be selected in March 2020.

We have reached our Membership Goal for the year! Our assigned goal is 526 and we have 529

members for 100.00% of goal. This includes 18 new members and 84 transfers.

Our retention goal is 464 and we have achieved 427. We need 37 more renewals to achieve our goal

Post Excellence Award

The American Legion's Post Excellence Award has added new criteria. To qualify for the Post Excellence Award, a post is required to achieve excellence in four areas: membership, submission of the Consolidated Post Report (CPR), attaining a 90 percent renewal rate and community activity.

BOYS STATE UPDATE

MONDAY, MARCH 2, 2020

1 - Post 178 had 31 nominees apply for Texas Boys State from 10 Frisco Independent School District High Schools and 2 Charter High Schools (Legacy Christian Academy & Leadership Prep School.

2 - The Boys State Committee has received all necessary paperwork including Texas Boys State Applications.

3 - All interviews of nominees have been completed as of Thursday, February 27, 2020. The Committee interviewed the nominees from February 11th through February 27th.

4 - The Boys State Committee will be meeting on Friday, March 6, 2020 to decide on the Boy State Delegates that will be attending Texas Boys State.

5 - Due to spring break in the high schools, the announcement of the Boy State Delegates will be made the week of March 16th through March 20th and the nominees not attending will be notified the same week.

6 - Currently we have a total of $6,811.71 in the financial report for Boys State and we are expecting another $4,800.00 from 2 contributors.

7 - The Boys State Committee includes: Paul Jones, Terry Gilbert, Ed Kelly, Marty Martel, Rick Redden, Ted Ruybal, Larry Wilhelm, and Larry Marshall.

8 - Girls State & Boys State Orientation will be on Monday, May 18, 2020 at 6:30 P.M. at the FISD Administrative Offices in the Board Room. Everyone is invited to attend this orientation.

Peter J. Courcy Post 178 Oratorical Report

March, 2020

The 2020 American Legion Department of Texas High School State Oratorical Contest was held

on February 17, 2020 at Collin College, Preston Ridge Campus, 6700 Wade Blvd., Frisco, TX

75035. Post 178 Commander and State Oratorical Chair, Fred Rogers, planned the contest and

was the moderator. Post 178 was honored to be selected to host this department contest for

the second year in a row.

Post 178 Legionnaires lead the invocation, posted the colors and cited the pledge of allegiance.

In addition, many volunteers from various posts staffed important positions including

tabulators, timekeepers, ushers, escorts and room monitors.

Five judges were utilized in the Department finals. Each of the judges was highly qualified and

contributed to the contest’s success. Certificates of appreciation were given by Department

Commander Jeff Perkins. Judges included Eileen Elledge, Jim Johnson, Jason Mrochek, Jared

Patterson, Tom Smith and Paul Jones.

Four outstanding high school students representing the state’s four divisions participated in the

contest.

The first-place winner received a $2,000 scholarship, second-place winner received a $1,500

scholarship, third-place winner received a $1,000 scholarship and fourth-place winner received

a $500 scholarship. In addition, each participant received a medallion.

Mr. Tanner David will participate along with more than 50 youth from across the nation in

National Contest Finals on April 18 & 19 at the Indianapolis Wyndham West Hotel.

Lastly, numerous American Legion dignitaries attended the contest. In addition to Department

Commander Jeff Perkins, others included Department Auxiliary President Brenda Towers, S.A.L.

Detachment Commander Eddy Seegers and past Department Commanders Jim Fleming and

John Hince.
