Site History

Initiallybuiltinthe17thCentury,theoriginalpropertybecamedilapidatedandwasdemolished,thepresentGreatBurghHousebeingconstructedin1912/1913inaNeo-Georgianstyle.ItwasdesignedbyErnestNewton,inaQueenAnnestyleforGordonColman.ThebuildingcontractorswereBenfieldandLoxleywhoarestilltradingtodayfromOxford.

In1926thebuilding,togetherwiththewholeNorkeEstatewassoldtotheDistiller’sCompany,foruseasaresearchdepartment.Laboratoriesweresetupinthehouseandresearchstartedintothebreedingofyeastsforbreadandspiritproduction.

Anumberofadditionalbuildingswereconstructedinthegroundsinthe1940’sto1960’stohousetheincreasingnumberofDistiller’sstaff.

In1967theDistiller’sCompanysoldGreatBurghtoBritishPetroleumandin1973thesitewasrenamedtheEpsomDivisionoftheBPSunburyResearchCentre.After10yearsBPsoldthehousetoBeechamPharmaceuticals,whoseresearchworkbeganin1977.AfterfurtherdevelopmentGreatBurghHousebecametheworldwideheadquartersofSmithKleinBeechamPharmaceuticalsResearchandDevelopment.

Inthelate1990’sSmithKleinBeechamrelocatedtheirresearchdepartmentandthesitewassoldtothepresentowner.

In1999allthebuildingsaroundGreatBurghHouseweredemolishedandunderthedesignandprojectmanagementofleadingarchitects,Gensler,anofficefloorandstaffamenitiesbuildingwasbuilt.Atthesametimetheservantsquarterswerealteredradicallytoformofficeaccommodationandstaffdiningfacilitiesandthegardenswererestoredtotheirformerglory.

GreatBurghHousewaslistedasabuildingofArchitecturalinterestandimportancein1991.In2003GreatBurghHouseitselfwasrestored,mainlytoitsoriginallyintendedresidentialuse.Moremodernservicessuchasairconditioningandvoiceanddataserviceswerealsoinstalled.
