Kallady Beach

Kallady Bridge

Newly constructed Gandhi Park is awesome to watch. It was opened in 2013 august, and it includes the famous Batticaloa gate too. The most glamorous fact that attracts more people to visit Gandhi Park and Batticaloa gate is that view of the lake which is busy with fishermen who are fishing there. By having a fishing rod with you, you can also join them in fishing. In addition, row of chairs and well maintained green plants are giving the taste of relaxation inside Gandhi Park.

And people can think that peacefulness of this place can come from the most famous man for peace Mahatma Gandhi gold colored statue which is in the middle of this park. Batticaloa gate is a monument which used in past as a port to connect Puliyantheevu island with the batticaloa town.

Just outside of Batticaloa, enjoy a nice and long walk on Kallady beach. Early risers can enjoy gorgeous sunrises (the show starts at 5.30AM). They can also meet the fishermen and help them pulling the net out of the water. Proceed further for about 4 kilometers on this vast unspoilt sandy beach to Navalady and reach the tip of the beach, to admire the estuary, where Batticaloa lagoon finally meets the sea. Kallady beach is very famous in Batticaloa, many families visit it during their free time, especially the area near Saravana road.

Enjoy a stroll on the wooden walkway. Have a look at Thiruchentoor Hindu temple, which was damaged by the tsunami and then rebuilt. Swimming is possible for good swimmers, as the sea can be a bit rough.

The newly built Kalladi Bridge, in Batticaloa, would be declared open in 2013. The new bridge, connecting Batticaloa North and South, on the Akkaraipattu-Batticaloa-Thirukkondiadimadu road, was constructed to replace the old Kalladi Bridge that was built by the British 70 years ago.

Kokkadicholai Hindu Temple

Lord Shiva is the destroyer or transformer. He is viewed as the supreme deity in Hinduism. There are five famous Eashwarams-Sivan temples in Sri Lanka. They are Thirukoneswaram in Trincomalee, Thiruketheeswaram in Mannar, Naguleswaram in Jaffna, Munneswaram in Chilaw, and in Batticaloa.

The temple in Kokkattichcholai is a “Thaanrhondreeswarar”. It means a Sivalingam ‘sprung up by itself’ and a temple was built later by the villagers in the vicinity over the course of time. The Sivalingam which sprung up by itself is called “Suyambulingam” as well. The Hindus believe that the Sivalingam is more than 10,000 years old. Devotees from various parts of the country travel to the renowned Kokkattichcholai temple, during special holy days. They join devotees of lord Muruguan pilgrimaging to Kathirgamam during the season by foot, taking jungle paths, crossing rivers and mountains.

There is a legend surrounding the temple according to the villagers in Kokkattichcholai. In the time long past, Kokkattichcholai was a forest. Some hunters roaming Kokkattichcholai, saw honey on top of a Kokkatti tree. Being charmingly delighted to reap the honey, they began to cut the tree with axe; but the tree began to bleed. The hunters were terrified and realized the presence of a divine deity in the tree, and they left the place immediately. A woman came to the spot and dressed up the wound carefully. Afterwards a small Sivalingam budded from the wound of the tree.

These shops cover a large amount of area and remain crowded all the ten days. Mamangam is unique for gathering people all over Batticaloa to one place, bring harmony and peace. There have been unofficial school holidays given for or taken by both the students and teachers in the important days of the festival.

The Old Dutch FortPlaces like Dutch fort Batticaloa attract both local and foreign travelers from all around the world. It is the main city of Eastern province of Sri lanka. This Dutch fort of Batticaloa was built on 1628 as a trading and economical administration centre of Ceylon in the Colonial era. It was used to trade cinnamon, pepper, chilly and miscellaneous things to other countries. Batticloa is called as the ‘land of the singing fish’. Not only that but also it is a testimony of Sri lankan history. At that time Protugese governors were in charge of Ceylon. The fort bulges in to a lacustrine plain

With the arrival of Dutch to Ceylon in 1602, Kandyan King Rajasingha pleased to Dutch to eradicate Protugese from the island.

As a result of that dutch captured the fort Batticaloa in 1638 and evidenced their primacy to the world. The fort had been under control of the dutch nearly for 20 years. But Sri Lanka was again invaded by the Britains. So that the Dutch had to surrender to the British and the fort had to handed over to the Britain in 1772 Therefore the fort is a memorial of all those 3 colonies.

The fort is bordered by a gutter. Fort Batticaloa is now an archeological site, being preserved for our future generation. High stone walls, especially the remaining Buddhist stupa and shatra which belongs to Ruhunu Kindom are facts that supports to the religious inference in 1st century. The stupa was placed by the King Kavantissa. Today structures of 4 bastions are preserved from the entire natural disasters. There are several other buildings around the fort built at different periods. Due to the natural disasters like Tsunami and Sea erosion, have dominated to damage the fort. Therefore the authorities must react to conserve this beautiful significant place. Otherwise we will lose a great historical and religious symbol of our nation. The fort is still in good condition to be visited. Although a perfect view of the Indian Ocean can be seen from the Batticloa lagoon. Thus you can entertain the multi cultural backgrounds at Batticaloa.

Lighthouse BaticolaOne of the most popular attractions of the town is the historic lighthouse that stands out against the blue skies and blue lagoons along the Bar Road. The oval masonry tower was built by the British when they ruled the island in 1913.For many years the lighthouse stood since its inception as a symbol of light, relief and hope for all the sailors who sailed the rough seas of the Indian ocean, today the lighthouse is a reminder of the great majestic history and heritage of Batticaloa.

Standing a colossal 28 metres the Batticaloa Lighthouse contains five windows and an observatory deck. The locals fondly call it Muttuwaran lighthouse which means in the local language where the lagoon meets the sea. The lighthouse is located exactly where one of Batticaloa’s many lagoons meets the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by many Palmyra and coconut trees it makes a very pretty picture along with the calm waters of the lagoon on one side and the waves of the ocean on the other side of the tower. There is only one strip of sand that separates the lagoon from the sea which is why the road where the light house stands is called Bar Road.
