Welcome to Garching!
Dear exchange students, Congratulations on your decision to study at the Technische Universität München (TUM) and welcome to our campus in Garching! We, the student council (=Fachschaft Maschinenbau), would like to welcome you and wish you all the best for your stay. Our goal is to ensure that you will have an easy time, getting to know the TUM, the campus in Garching, the other TUM campuses and the department of mechanical engineering. This booklet will give you some information, which should help you get started studying at our faculty: First of all, we will introduce you to the university’s homepages, before we present you how to use your Student Card and the library. As studying isn’t always just about work, you will surely be interested in the campus bar “C2” and our article about Munich at night. In the contact list you will hopefully find all the contacts you need, if problems should occur during your time here. Another important point of your cultural exchange is the different language. Our language center is pleased to help you to get a German partner in order to learn the language by speaking, not just with books. If you haven’t noticed yet, the International Department of the Fachschaft offers a voluntary German Partner program, the “Buddy-Program”, too. For every exchange students we provide an experienced TUM student, who will help you, if needed, with most TUM related things throughout the semester. A great way to find new friends if you have just arrived. If you have any questions or if there is anything, a member of the Fachschaft can do to assist you, please let us know. We will be happy to help. Of course, we are also glad if you help us by giving feedback on the brochure, as we’re always eager to improve it. We hope that you will enjoy your time here with us! We are your student council (Fachschaft)
We counsel you We answer all your questions, no matter if it’s something about your studies or just about how to find the way to your next course. Just visit us at the office of the student council (“glass office” near the main entrance) or write us an e-mail to [email protected].
We inform you Your “Exchangy” and the Incoming Event shall help you accustom to Munich and the Technische Universität. In addition to this information, the "Reisswolf" (the student’s newspaper), as well as the "Klopapier" are published three times each semester. You'll find the "Klopapier", like the name suggests, on the toilet. You find current news about your studies on www.fsmb.de (see extra article). The latest news in policy of higher education as well as job and housing offers can be found on the pin boards around the office of the student council.
We entertain you During your semester you'll have the chance to forget the learning stress for some time and take part in our events. For playing cards, there are tournaments in poker and “Schafkopf” (a bavarian card game). More over there is a paper plane competition, a sports meeting and in November our biggest event, the freshers party (ESP = ErstSemesterParty) in our faculty hall.
We improve your study conditions We represent the voice of students in important committees like the “Fakultätsrat”, the university council, or the “Berufungskommission”, the application procedure for new professors.

We are in close contact with our dean of studies Prof. Werner, other student councils and institutions like the "Hochschulreferat für Studium und Lehre" – something like the quality management of the TUM. Thus, the thing called "policy" becomes something really interesting and vivid.
We print and sell the lecture notes for you For the majority of the lectures the professors publish lecture notes, which we print for you. You can buy them at our sales stall from your fellow students, who sell the notes during their leisure time.
We need you At the FVV (FachschaftsVollVersammlung = plenum of all students of the faculty) which is an assembly of all students of our department that takes place once every semester, we present our current projects, hold votes about important issues and gather feedback and ideas from you. Thus, the FVV is the simplest possibility for you to place your criticism and your ideas.
We look for you Discussing with professors at eye level, organizing events for up to 5000 guests, working with printing machines or receiving and passing information about studying, university and internships to your fellow students. That and a lot of fun while working with a committed team of students of all semesters awaits you, if you work in our team. Write an e-mail at [email protected] and we'll pass some more information to you or arrange a meeting, where we'll figure out, how you might be a part of the Fachschaft.

We are talking about topics like the last exam, computer problems or extra-curricular subjects like the latest car of BMW here. Every student can participate by creating an account. How to find your way through the mass of internet pages of our
university
All of you will have used our TUMonline-portal where all of you registered to be able to apply for a semester at the TUM. Probably you will also have visited the Homepage of the University and/or of our faculty. In the first few weeks of your studies you will have to get used to quite a lot more home pages, due to the fact that every department of the faculty has its own website. So here is an overview of the basic and most important websites:
TUMonline ( www.campus.tum.de ) TUMonline is the most important website you will be using, as everything concerning the organization of your studies and your student life at TUM will be managed from there:
- You will find your very own LRZ-ID, which is your digital name and which is necessary to log on to different e-Learning sites and to the computers
- It is possible to print your certificate of enrollment
- You may create your timetable here too
- You can look at your grades
- You can register for exams (Warning: Always be aware of the registration deadline because if you miss it you won´t be allowed to take any exams.)
- You can find people, rooms and events here To do any of these activities you will have to log in with your login-name and password. Login: LRZ-ID and password

TUM page ( www.tum.de ): On the official website of the Technische Universität you will find general information about the TUM, research, studies, university life and global affairs. You can chek your e-mails at https://xmail.mwn.de. Login: myTUM-address and password
The homepage of our faculty ( www.mw.tum.de ) Here you will find information about the mechanical engineering department and the specific course of studies which the department offers. Furthermore the homepage provides you with the guidelines for exams and internships as well as a catalogue of lecture notes and university internships. Moreover, you will find the guideline of your own program there, so you can check which courses are mandatory to obtain your degree and which courses are elective subjects. The exam date will also be listed here. It is very important that you know that the dates are subject to change and therefore not fixed. Furthermore, there is a list of every department of the faculty including their location.

Moodle ( www.moodle.tum.de ): Moodle is our e-Learning portal. It is used by many departments but not by all. To book an e-Learning course you have to sign it up at TUMonline together with the original course. It is also possible to book them in moodle but it is more complicated. You can find worksheets, lecture notes and tasks/homework there. Login: LRZ-ID and password

Department Websites: Every department has its own website. You can find information concerning every lecture they are delivering and they also publish news about their department and their lectures. Most of the worksheets are listed here. Sometimes you have to use a login to get a sheet but they will tell you about this during the lecture. Normally the address is “www.*acronym of the department*.mw.tum.de” for example lnm.mw.tum.de (Department for Numerical Mechanics )

StudentCard
As a student at the Technische Universität München (TUM) you will get or probably already got you StudentCard. In general the StudentCard is an integrated circuit card providing a photograph of yours for identification. Its main 3 functions are listed below: Student ID: You can use this card in order to confirm yourself as a student as long as you are enrolled as a student at TUM. Your matriculation number is also noted on the card. In addition the StudentCard is needed to gain access to the main Campus of the TUM in the City Centre and its library on weekends, on public holidays and after 9 pm. Library ID for the university library: You will find a bar code on the back side of your StudendCard with your personal library key. Using this key you may login the computers in the lobby of the library. Pay Card: For paying in the Mensa, Cafeteria and also at the copier in the library. MVV Card: take a look at MVV (p.23)
Where do I get the StudentCard? You get your Student Card in the Student Service Center, located at the entrance hall of the main building on the Stammgelände. They will hand you the StudentCard for showing them your Personal ID, a photo identification or the former “paper“Student ID. Opening time of the Student Service Center: Monday-Thursday: 9am - 12am and 1pm - 4pm Friday: 9am - 12am

Validation You need to validate your StudentCard first at one of the Validation Stations which is going to print the validity date onto the StudentCard. This procedure has to be repeated every term. The validation is available as soon as you payed your tuition fees to the TUM. Validation Stations can be found at the following locations:
- TUM Main Campus, Arcisstraße 21, ground floor left and right of the stairs to the library
- Campus Garching: In the Mechanical Engineering Building (MW) close to the lockers in building 1 (left side)
- At the entrance of the Mathematics/Informatics building (MI) on the left (passing the cafeteria and the toilets) close to a wall embayment
Activate your StudentCard for the library In order to use the StudentCard as Library ID you have to activate it at the library. After the activation you will be allowed to borrow books at the library. In order to activate your StudentCard just fill in the registration form at the library. Every Card has a unique library key and a password. Library Key: 11-digit number at the backside of your StudentCard Standard-Password: Your birthday in the following order: DDMM (4-digits) It is recommended to change the Standard-Password as soon as possible. You can do that at the Online-Katalog (Menüpunkte Konto > Benutzerdaten). The length of the new password has to be between 4 and 6 digits.
Charge If you want to be able to pay with your StudentCard you will have to charge it at a card recharger. You can find one of the stations in Garching at the Mensa and next to the Cafeteria of the mechanical engineering building where you can charge your card with cash (5 €,10 €, 20 € and 50 € bills) or with an EC-Card.

Afterwards you can pay with your StudentCard at all facilities of the Studentenwerk. Just hold it against the reading device to pay, charge or simply to get to know the remaining value on it. Important: When you receive the StudentCard note the Card Number! This number can be found on the frontside on the right of the card. The number resembles the following: C xxxxxx. In case you lose the StudentCard you may get back your charged money on the card when you have this number.
Loss or Theft To prevent any abuse of your StudentCard (for instance in the library) in case of loss or theft, you have to get your StudentCard blocked as soon as possible. Because the Immatriculation Office and the library are using their own independent systems you will have to get it blocked at both facilities. When you issue another StudentCard you will get a new Library ID from the Immatriculation Office. The library will therefore be informed about your new ID.

Issuing a new StudentCard caused by loss or damaged by careless usages In case your StudentCard got lost or damaged by careless usage, issuing a new one costs you 30€. You will have to do the payment at the payment station (TUM Main Campus, Room 1157) during its office hours (Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9 am -12 am). Afterwards, take the voucher to the Immatriculation Office to get your new StudentCard. In case the payment station is closed you may directly pay at the Immatriculation Office.
Issuing a new StudentCard in case of theft In case your StudentCard was stolen the new StudentCard is for free. It is required though to make a report of your stolen StudentCard at the police and hand it to the Immatriculation Office. Library
Welcome to the library of the Technische Universität München. We would like to support you while you are studying for your degree, therefore we offer a big selection of books, technical magazines and electronic media. Furthermore here are computers for research and especially seats for your studies in a quiet atmosphere. In case we have drawn your attention, just take a short look in our library to convince yourself. If there are any questions left feel free to ask and we will be happy to help you! We have several different library branches in nearly every faculty of the university, which are usually spezialized for the faculty they are placed in as well as books from different fields of science.
Library Card: Your StudentCard is also your library card. You just have to fill out a form and we will unlock your card at any branch of the library. Afterwards, it will be possible for you to borrow books, pay at the copier and log on to the library computers.
Literature: In the branch of mechanical engineering in Garching more than 30.000 volumes of magazines and nearly 200 current issues are available. The focus is on topics which are equal to the themes you are confronted with in your studies. We also have over 40.000 books in the wide field of engineering and other fields of science which are taught in Garching. They are all ready to be borrowed. If you are looking for a particular book please check our internet catalog where every book from the whole library is listed. It will also tell you where you can find it and if it is possible to be lent.
How to borrow a book: Every book can generally be borrowed for 4 weeks. But there are some exceptions, because some books have to stay in the library to be accessible at any time. To be identified they are marked with a yellow or blue label.
Service: You can return your books at any branch of the library. We also have a messenger services between the different departments; so if you want a book from a different department we will deliver it to the department of your choice. It is also possible to get a scanned copy of any article printed in any tome. We will also automatically extend your time of return to 8 weeks or 5 months depending on the book. This is only possible if no other student requires it. Your loan period can be checked online (www.ub.tum.de).

TUM Language Center
The Language Center offers students of the TUM the opportunity to develop and improve their foreign language skills and expert language knowledge for academic purposes. Courses and seminars in seventeen different languages are available during the semester: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German as a Foreign Language, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Spanish and Turkish. The overall program contains basic, intermediate, and advanced classes. Additionally, block courses are provided for some languages during the semester break and Tandems are organized. ECTS credits can be awarded for the successful completion of courses; usually 3 credits per 2 SWS (two lessons per week).
Registration For all courses it is necessary to register online at www.campus.tum.de. The course schedule can be found there too (as well as via www.sprachenzentrum.tum.de). It is announced well in advance. Registration for the semester courses starts about two weeks before the first lecture week (the exact time is shown at the registration button). Even if you are only on the waiting list, you should attend the first lesson – maybe you can get a place after all. Students failing to attend the first lesson without notifying the lecturer may lose their place in the course. For the languages German as a Foreign Language, English, French, Italian and Spanish, a placement test at www.moodle.tum.de is necessary for any level higher than A 1 (or A 1.1). You will also need to register for the exams at www.campus.tum.de (deadline: day before the exam)
Fee-based German Intensive Courses during the Semester Break These are offered during the spring and fall semester breaks. They consist of 60 hours and are equal to a semester course of four hours per week. The fee is € 200. You can find further information and the registration form on the site German Intensive Courses website (via www.sprachenzentrum.tum.de).
The TUM Writing Center The English Writing Center offers free support with English language writing tasks to all members of the TUM community. We do not correct or edit texts for you; rather, we work with you to help you improve your written communication skills. Appointments and walk-ins are possible in Munich, Garching and Weihenstephan. Similar help is available for writing tasks or presentations in German („Sprachberatung“).

Chinese/German - French/German - Swedish/German - Spanish/German
TUMtandem gives international students and their German-speaking counterparts an opportunity to improve their foreign language skills through a series of one-on-one conversation sessions. As an international student who is looking for a chance to practice speaking German, this program lets you team up with a native speaker who is currently learning your mother tongue. With the further aim of promoting cross-cultural integration, TUMtandem teaches you and your partner to ask questions that will foster a deeper mutual understanding of and respect for the differences between each other’s cultural backgrounds. TUMtandem partnerships run 1-2 semesters and are supervised by the TUM Language Center staff. New in Munich? You want to connect? You want to be international? We have fun! We exchange! We get involved!
IAESTE supports interns from around the world. Get to know a volunteering student organization, meet international and local students and get connected at our Local Committee (LC) in Munich. We take care of incoming interns, outgoing students, public relations, apartments, institutional advertising – join our multicultural team and undertake exciting assignments and responsibility. While more than 85 countries worldwide take part in IAESTE, Germany is one of the biggest members – running about 60 LCs at almost every technical university. Being supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), The Federal Ministry of Education and Research and The Federal Foreign Office, we are able to organize internships in the whole world. IAESTE is nonpolitical and independent. It was founded in 1948 in London. Two years later Germany became member and by now exchanges more than 1200 interns every year. The internships offer practical training for prospective engineers, scientists, agriculturists or foresters. More important, they offer an insight to daily life and focus on the people of foreign countries and fascinating cultures. For those of you, who are interested in interdisciplinary courses, the Carl-von-Linde-Akademie, which is part of the Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS), offers TUM students a great opportunity to participate in subjects beyond mechanical engineering. Usually it’s possible to get ECTS points, but only very few are accredited by the faculty of mechanical engineering and probably it’s the same with your home university. However, it’s very interesting to discuss and participate! The courses usually take place at the main campus in central Munich and are hold in small groups with seminar character. Some of them are in English. For a regular registration you have to hurry up, because several seminars are fully booked already hours after activation-date. You can register for the courses from 1. April respectively 1. October. A “How to enroll” description in English is offered. The proposed courses are spilt into the following sub-categories:

Public Transport (MVV)
Since autumn 2013 there is a new semester ticket for students available, which makes public transport especially for students on campus Garching much cheaper. This semester ticket is split into an obligatory part (a) and an optional part (IsarCard Semester (b)). The optional part (b) is only valid in combination with part (a). Every student has to pay 59 Euros for the obligatory part (a) during enrollment. It’s combined with the amount for the Studentenwerk (responsible for the canteens, student housing etc.), so the total amount you have to remit to the university is 111 Euros. Ticket (a) is printed on your student card during validation. You cannot use your student ID as a public transport ticket before validating! Please check, if the correct validity date is on your student ID. With season ticket part (a) you are allowed to use the public transport system in Munich and surroundings within the entire MVV network with the following restrictions: Monday – Friday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Week-end and public holidays: no restrictions. Optional Part (b) (IsarCard Semester) is available on every ticket vending machine and is 141 Euros. With (a) + (b), you can travel within the entire MVV network area without any restrictions. You can use buses, trams, U-Bahn, S-Bahn and certain regional trains (RE).

FAQ: Can I take a train to the airport or to Starnberger See? Yes, both tickets (a) as well as (a) + (b) are valid from zone 1-4, from white zone to red zone, that is for example from city center to the airport. What documents do I have to take with me? Student ID (equal ticket (a)), ID, and (if bought) IsarCard Semester. When starts and ends the semester ticket to be valid? Fall semester: 01.10. – 31.03 Summer semester: 01.04 – 30.09 I didn’t buy the IsarCard Semester and I want to travel before 6 p.m. or after 6 a.m.. What to do? When travelling before or after the time period of validity with a student ID, you must buy an additional ticket for the respective zone or an additional season ticket. I lost my student ID. Check the security office next to the main entrance. Maybe a nice college mate brought it there. Otherwise consult the student registration office. You’ll get a new one. Meanwhile take your certificate of enrollment with you. I lost my IsarCard Semester, and 141€ for another one is pretty much. What next? When buying the IsarCard Semester, you will be issued a receipt (proof of purchase). Please take and keep this receipt, because in case you lose your IsarCard Semester, you will only be issued a replacement card (one time only) if you can show this proof of purchase. There is also an application for mobile phones running Android, iOS or Windows Phone.

Directions for the short but annoying trips between the locations of the TUM Which locations are there?
- Stammgelände Innenstadt (=city center): e.g. departments like architecture, civil engineering, business management, electrical engineering and information technology, business administrations
- Campus Garching: mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, informatics, chemistry
- Campus Weihenstephan in Freising: agricultural and horticultural sciences, biology, brewing and beverage technology, nutritional science, forest science and resource management
- Klinikum Rechts der Isar: medicine
- Diaspora Lothstraße: school of education
- Olympiagelände: sports The three main campuses are the Stammgelände, Garching and Weihenstephan. Here you get a short description, how you can get to Stammgelände and Weihenstephan from Garching.
Garching – Stammgelände (Arcisstraße) by car: Take the autobahn A9 from Garching Nord until the end. Take the right lane at the exit Schwabing. Then change immediately to the left to drive on the “Mittlerer Ring”, into the “Petueltunnel” and inside the tunnel take the first exit, direction Belgrad-, Schleißheimer Straße. Outside the tunnel, turn left into Belgradstraße at the first intersection with traffic lights. The street leads to the city until Elisabethplatz. There you have to turn right and the next one left into Arcisstraße. After a short time the Stammgelände is on the right hand side. If there is a traffic jam at the A9, you can take the B11 to Garching in direction to “Studentenstadt”. But often this route will be crowded too. On the B11 you pass “Studentenstadt” and it ends in the Leopoldstraße (B13) in Schwabing. Turn left into Leopoldstraße and then take Georgen-, Schelling- or Theresienstraße (advantage of Theresienstraße: one-way) on the right-hand side. Stay on this street until it crosses Arcisstraße. Turn left into it to reach the Stammgelände. by public transport via Universität: Take the underground U6 to the station Universität (Ludwig-Maximilian-University) and then you can walk along Ludwigstraße to the south. Turn into the first (Schellingstraße) or second (Theresienstraße) street on the right and follow the street until Arcisstraße. The walk takes you about 15 minutes. If the weather conditions are bad or you just don't want to walk, you can take a bus (line 154), departing at the intersection of

Schellingstraße and Ludwigstraße, to the station Arcisstraße. From there you have to walk about 5 minutes to the south until you reach the TUM. by public transport via Sendlinger Tor: Take the U6 to the station Sendlinger Tor and change to the U2 to Feldmoching. Get off the U2 at Königsplatz and cross the beautiful Königsplatz or get off at Theresienstraße and walk to the east. Coming from the station Theresienstraße you can't miss the university, as it's very easy to discover thanks to the two wings of the TUM building, crossing the street, like bridges.
Garching – Weihenstephan main street by car: Take the B11 to the north and it leads you directly to Freising. After crossing the rail tracks on a bridge, there is an intersection (if you turn right, the street leads to the train station). At this intersection you have to turn left into Saarstraße. Follow the street until the second intersection with traffic lights. Turn left into Vöttinger Straße and follow the street directly to the campus of Weihenstephan. short cut by car: Take the B11 to the north, when you leave Achering turn left and at the end of the street to the right. This street makes a left turn and at its end turn right again. Now you pass the flooded gravel pits of Pulling (nice lake for swimming :)). While following the road you'll drive through Pulling and you're still staying on this street. At the end of the street turn right and the Vöttinger Straße leads you directly to Freising and the campus. by public transport: Take a bus (line 690) to the train station in Neufahrn. Now change to the S1 to Freising (That's the front part. The rear part of the train continues to the airport and not to Freising). In Freising you have to take a bus of line 638 to Weihenstephan. From its station you can reach every building on the campus by foot.
Zentraler Hochschulsport (ZHS) by U-Bahn: Take the U3 to "Olympiazentrum" and get off at this station. Then go to the northern exit and follow Lerchenauer Straße to the north. Go left via the bridge for pedestrians (Helene Mayer Ring). After the Sparkasse keep semileft and go along the Conollystraße, which is a pedestrian area. At the end of Conollystraße there is a short park and you already see the buildings from the 70s (Olympic Games 1972) , where you find the ZHS. by bicycle: the easiest way to the ZHS is via the Olympiapark. Just take the bridge between the Olympiastadium and the Olympiahalle. It's not possible to drive with the car directly to the ZHS, but around BMW plant and around the “Olympiapark” are some parking lots. Nevertheless you have to walk a short distance.

C2 – Where beer unites with university
The C2 (= Campus-Cneipe) is a small bar on the campus in Garching-Forschungszentrum and often used as comfortable students' meeting point in the afternoon and in the evening at the end of an long exhausting day at university. At this place you will get the possibility to relax with a drink like a beer or a cocktail whenever you want to. Of course you can also buy some snacks and other food like pizza. The Campus-Cneipe C2 is an important part of the students' life on campus and it contributes diversity to the daily routine at university. Let’s say, today would be one of these days when you are bored and frustrated, the lectures weren’t useful at all. But going home in this mood – no way! So what can you do to get back your motivation? There's only one reasonable answer: Get your friends and spend an entertaining evening in the C2! The kitchen offers a large variety of hearty sandwiches, lovely made baguettes or tasty salads. You can also eat cheese topped nachos, Bavarian "Brotzeitteller" and much more. During the winter semester, there is a weekly changing warm meal and in the summer the C2 also offers an exquisite choice of ice cream flavors. The greatest variety however you can discover in the great amount of different kind of beer on the list of beverages. Our University Brewery Weihenstephan provides the Campus-Cneipe with their delicious beer, you can order a wheat beer in all intensities (nonalcoholic, light, normal, strong and dark) and there are also Lager, Ale and also Pilsener. In addition you can drink a lot of different cocktail, long drinks and shots there, but also alcohol free drinks aren’t missing either: You can get all kinds of lemonade, water and juices and any combinations, cocktails and also hot drinks too. Apart from that the C2 offers a lot more than just drinks and food. Every week you can prove your knowledge in the "Pub Quiz" on Tuesday. The questions concern every imaginable subject and it's a lot of fun to spend the evening with some friends and take part even if you have to take a guess sometimes. In the end you can also win attractive prizes. Furthermore there are special events like a big BBQ, the pizza week or the bandnight and much more. Just come around and have a look! In December the C2 also organizes a christmas party for everybody to get together. In summer you can bring the day to a close in the local beer garden. There are more than 10.000 bars, restaurants, cinemas, clubs and other locations that try to access your money as well as your time. In order to help you avoid malicious corners, which actually don´t exist, as Munich is safest city in Germany, some of the pecularities of Munich's night life are explained here. But for the greatest experience you should discover the nightlife on your own, enjoy yourself with (new) friends and unfortunately spend quite a lot of money, as life in Munich is very expensive in general.
The city center The center of Munich tries to convey the typical picture of a Bavarian city to tourists from all over the world. Everything from brewery restaurants such as the “Hofbräuhaus” and the “Augustiner” near the “Marienkirche”, the pedestrian area for shopping addicts and the “Mathäser” cinema, the largest in town, is found here. Next to expensive places such as “Hardrock Cafe” or the “Sausalitos”, there are several good clubs round the pedestrian area; the “Ruby”, “Sugar” or "Crux". A recommendation for those who like to enjoy an evening in Bavarian style is the so called “Heimatabend” at “Lola and Ludwig”, a club located close to central station. The real Munich night life takes place in these clubs, all situated between the “Sendlinger Tor” and the “Maximiliansplatz”: “Cafe Cord”, “Milchbar”, “Harry Klein”, “089- Bar”, "La Nuit", “X-cess”, “Rote Sonne”, "Cong", “Max und Moritz” or “Pascha”.
“Münchner Freiheit” and “Altschwabing” Getting off the subway at “Münchner Freiheit” or “Giselastraße” offers a great variety of locations to spend a nice evening. It is worth taking a look at the sidestreets of the “Leopoldstraße”, the core of Schwabing. There are pubs, clubs and bars with happy hour specials and live music. Don't miss out on these places: “Hopfendolde”, “Barschwein”, "Schluckauf" and “Cocktailhouse”.
In the neighbourhood of the university In case you want to go out near the TUM “Stammgelände”, there are a couple of bars and cafés with collegiate character you shouldn’t miss out taking a look at. These are found between the TU at Arcisstraße and the LMU. Go to the “Café an der Uni”, "Zeitgeist", "Barer 47" “lo Studente” or “Pasta e Basta”, "alter Simpl", "Schall und Rauch"! These bars offer a cozy atmosphere for the beer in between or after the exam. This area is highly recommended especially on the weekend and if you have difficulties in deciding where to spend the evening. It also gives the chance to meet students from other faculties, e. g. humanities.
Glockenbach-Viertel What has been an "inferior gay" neighborhood 15 years ago has become an insider`s tip for anyone demanding for nice Munich nightlife. These are the

places you can take a look at: “Sax” and “Bank”. The “Gärtnerplatz” is a wonderful meeting point to enjoy your first beer with your friends or go on a date there. On a warm summer evening there´s a wonderful atmosphere to begin afterwards your pub crawl comparable to the "Englischer Garten" or any Munich "Biergarten" to start.
Other places to go Southeastern to the “Ostbahnhof” there are many discos, bars, dancing clubs, swig huts, 24-7 food stalls, gambling places and over-30-parties. The highest climbing hall in Europe and a beach bar (“Beach 38”) can also be found there. If you want to find a good place to party, get off the S-Bahn at “Donnersberger Brücke”. Here you can find “Die Nachtgalerie”, “Das Rockstudio” and the “Klangwelt”. If you get off the train at “Hackerbrücke”, there is the “Neuraum”: In Garching the “Biergarten am Mühlenpark” is a well hidden pearl which is worth looking for. Since 2006 you can find the Campus-Cneipe (C2) on the university`s campus. It is reasonably priced because it was planned and is run by students.
The collegiate “strongholds” Whenever there are many students in one place, the adequate logistics are not far. In the “Studentenstadt” or in the “Olympiadorf”, a multitude of cheap Bistro-Café-Bars, run by students like the “Manhattan”, the “TribüHne”, the “Pot” (Studentenstadt) and the “Olydisco” (Olympiadorf) can be found. In addition there are house parties taking place during the semesters which are definitely worth attending. The information when and where such a party is taking place is best to be extracted from your fellow students. The most important parties for students are the ones they organize themselves like those for freshmen and graduates, parties during the semester, summer, winter and house parties in the different residential homes, at university and in various faculties. Get the information of time and place from your fellow students or gather it in the “Magistrale” from all the posters.

Room numbering
In order to find the lecture halls, classrooms and all the other offices, you have to know our room numbering system. This small guide will help you to find (most) of the rooms in the mechanical engineering department. If you are looking for a room in chemistry or somewhere else, may god be with you (or just ask one of the people standing inside, being afraid of the sun :D) Now the system: All of the rooms with an MW (MaschinenWesen = Mechanical engineering) in front are in our department. All of the others are somewhere else (like CH for Chemistry, MI for math/informatics, PH for physics). The first number is the floor. 0 = ground floor, 1 = first floor, etc. The second number is the building. The last two numbers are the location of the rooms inside one building. In every building is a plan with the exact locations for each room. In case it's a room with 50 in the end, it's a lecture room with an access from the main hall. Here is a small overview over the wings:
