■ Course Information on GLS system Exchange students can find detailed course information, such as the course code/number, classroom, syllabi, lecturer’s name, etc., on the GLS system. The GLS will be accessible with a SKKU ID and a PW which are to be notified individually. Additional information about the online system is available on the next page.

■ Course Code and Class Number Special course codes and class numbers are assigned to each course the SKKU provides. Hence, it is very important for exchange students to be well-informed of this and always put the course code and class number at the same time when it comes to course selection and registration. You have to keep the class number along with the code as there may be chance of different classes having the same course code/title.

[NOTE] * Course code usually consists of 7 digits with 3~4 alphabets and numbers (E.g. BUS3004, ICE3001, CFS2008), while Class number has two digits (E.g. 01, 41, I1)

Course Restriction (1)

In this case, credits of the undergraduate courses are not to be approved by SKKU since it is considered as pre-requisite.

Maximum Credits

Exchange students are going to be allowed to take up to the following number of credits per semester depending on the educational level they belong to.

[NOTE] It is your responsibility to confirm the requirements of your home university regarding credit transfer. In most cases, each SKKU course weighs 3 credits, while the others value 1~2 credits.

Undergraduate 18 SKKU credits 6~7 courses equivalent to 36 ECTS

Graduate 9 SKKU credits 3~4 courses equivalent to 18 ECTS

MBA 15 SKKU credits 5~6 courses equivalent to 30 ECTS

ID and Password / Online System

You will be able to log in to the SKKU online system with them. ■ Kingo Portal (http://www.skku.edu/eng > Kingo portal) “Kingo Portal” is the website in which you can log in to the SKKU online system. You can access it from the SKKU official English website (www.skku.edu/eng). It is going to provide you with both a free email account as well as the gateway to the Golden Lawn Square (GLS) System.

■ GLS System You can access the GLS, which is a special online system for SKKU students in which students can see their final grades, make course evaluation, refer to course syllabus, etc. ■ Sugang System (http://sugang.skku.edu) Sugang system is the place where you can virtually sign up for the courses you would like to take. You can also see your course schedules after the course registration is completed. ■ I-Campus (http://www.icampus.ac.kr) Most of the courses use the system called I-campus. Students can log in to the I-campus website with individual ID and password. You can attend the online-course on I-campus as well as download class materials from the ‘course library’.

10

Lecture Types on I-Campus

■ Blended-Learning (B/L) Lecture B/L lecture consists of online and offline classes and students should attend them alternately. ■ In-house Virtual Course All lectures are electronically recorded and posted on the I-Campus. Students should take this class before the next lecture becomes available.

■ Simultaneous e+ Lecture Simultaneous e+ Lecture is an offline class in which all of them are videotaped in an “e+ lecture room” that are to be readily accessible on the I-Campus for review.

Technical Issue on Accessibility to SKKU Website

As the SKKU website is made based on Internet Explorer, it might not work properly on other kinds of web browsers, such as Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. It is therefore definitely required for international students who use one of these browsers to install software called “Wizvera.” It will be automatically set-up on your computer when you click ‘Kingo Portal’ button at http://www.skku.edu/eng. It will enable you to access the SKKU website. [NOTE] SKKU online system is optimized for Microsoft Windows; it may not work on Mac.

Course Sign-up and Approval Form of Attending Course

All exchange students are advised to complete course sign-ups before their arrival at SKKU; the course registration guide, which elaborates the ways to sign-up for the courses is going to be sent to each student via email. Please note that there is a considerable chance that some of the courses you would like to take may be already filled up with Korean students, which means “no vacancy.” [NOTE] There are two ways of signing up for courses; through the online system and through the approval form of attending course. If you are not able to enroll in the course due to the class being full, technical difficulties, etc., please refer to the following passage. ■ Approval Form of Attending Courses If you are not able to register for the courses you want before coming to Korea, you are kindly advised to fill out the form, “Approval Form of Attending Course”, which is going to be available at the SKKU IO. The form requires you to get a professor’s approval and signature on it. You should refer to the professor of the course you would like to take, and hand it in to the IO within the given period. If you are not able to meet the professor in person, you are also allowed to get approval by email. In this case, you are advised to attach the printed email to the form and submit them together.

[NOTE] * You are advised to be “flexible” in course selection as the SKKU IO cannot guarantee each student’s enrollment in any specific course, even though we are going to coordinate any matters relevant to course registration.

11

Course Changes and Confirmation

■ Course Add and Drop The Course Add and Drop period is going to start after the “course registration” period is over. ■ Course Withdrawal Undergraduate exchange students can withdraw up to two courses when “the course add and drop period” is over. Please be aware that postgraduate courses cannot be withdrawn and postgraduate students cannot withdraw from any course during this period. Course withdrawal is not revocable. ■ Confirmation of Course Registration As soon as your course registration, including adding and dropping the courses, is completed, you are strongly required to submit a “Confirmation of Course Registration” sheet with a hardcopy of the electronic course list as an attachment to us within the given period. It is also going to be available at the SKKU IO. This form will enable us not only to finally confirm which classes each exchange student will attend during her/his stay, but will also enable you to double-check what courses you have signed up for.

* Check List for Course Sign-up

Since exchange students are not accustomed to the course registration mechanism and the online system of SKKU, it is strongly advised to international exchange students to see if you missed any information. ■ Must-check □ If you can log on to the SKKU online system with your personal ID and password □ If the courses you want to take are going to be conducted in a language you can speak □ If the courses you will attend do not cause time clashes - Students who wish to take KLC should take its schedule into consideration □ When “the course registration and the course add and drop period” starts and ends

■ Must-do (Before Entry) □ Become accustomed to using the Kingo Portal and the GLS system □ Sign up for as many courses as possible before departure online □ Understand two ways of course sign up

■ Must-do (After Entry) □ Submit the “Approval Form of Attending Course” for the courses which you failed to sign-up for through online □ Hand in the “Confirmation of Course Registration form” after your course registration is completed

12

Grade, Credit Transfer and Transcript

■ SKKU Grading System Basically, SKKU employs a relative grading system, although some courses might adopt an absolute grading system. You should keep in mind, however, that professors are entitled to give students the final grade based on their own evaluation criteria. Grading which is supposed to be done at the end of semester is totally at the professor’s discretion, while the IO only takes care of arranging course registration of exchange students. ■ SKKU Credit 1 SKKU credit requires students to fulfill 1 study hour per a week. In case of a 3 SKKU credit course, students should complete 48 hours of study during one semester considering 16 weeks makes one semester at SKKU.

■ Credit Transfer An exchange student’s home university is mainly responsible for transferring SKKU credits. SKKU only provides information on the grading system and the academic policy as follows. - E.g. we do not present the ECTS transfer ratio as it is supposed to be determined by the home university considering the required study hours needed to earn SKKU credits. ■ SKKU Academic Transcript Guide The university uses a letter grading system A, B, C, D and F. A Grade Point Average is also calculated on the transcript based on the grade values described below.

Letter Grade Grade Point Value Numerical Scale of Marks (%)

A+ 4.5 95 - 100 A 4.0 90 - 94

B+ 3.5 85 - 89 B 3.0 80 - 84

C+ 2.5 75 - 79 C 2.0 70 - 74

D+ 1.5 65 - 70 D 1.0 60 - 64 F 0.0 0 - 59 P Pass I Incomplete

■ Course Evaluation There are two course evaluation periods per semester, and exchange students should finish the course evaluation on the GLS system. Students who do not evaluate courses during the given period will be not allowed to see grades online, even though hardcopy of academic transcript is still available. ■ Academic Transcript SKKU IO will send each exchange students’ academic transcript to their home institution after the semester ends. It usually takes 10~15 days for us to be able to print it out with the most recent semester’s grades. The courses taken and grades given in a semester will not appear on the student’s transcript until all grades have been recorded electronically.

13

Korean Language Course (KLC)

SKKU provides exchange students with two types of Korean Language Courses; regular KLC and KLC for exchange students. Both courses are operated by the Sungkyun Language Institute (SLI), while the IO offers information to students and receives application. All exchange students are going to be given full tuition waivers for both.

Type Credit Study Hours Class Schedule

Regular KLC 9 200 09:00~13:00 / Monday ~ Friday

KLC for Exchange Students none 60 TBA after placement test

■ Regular KLC The regular class is open for all international students at SKKU, including exchange students. Those who want to take the regular KLC should take the placement test as well as leave 9 credits vacant, considering the maximum credit you are allowed take and the credits you have already registered for. A certificate of completion with the total amount of workload and a brief summary of the program is going to be granted to every participant, given he/she has successfully completed the whole program.

[NOTE] * Graduate students cannot get KLC credits approved as it is classified as an undergraduate course. ■ KLC for Exchange Students This course is only for exchange students; it might not open if there are not enough applicants. Staff from the SLI is going to present more information about the course at the orientation. ■ KLC Registration Registration for both courses is supposed to be done after your arrival. The SLI is going to give you more information about registration at the orientation.

International Summer Semester (ISS)

The SKKU International Summer Semester is an annual summer school program that lasts for four weeks. It singles out the most intriguing theme of the year with which every course is cohesively related. Additionally, eminent professors around the world are going to share knowledge and insight with highly motivated international students on the SKKU campus. Details on the program will be available including details on tuition waiver options. For more information, please visit the following address: http://summer.skku.edu

Extension of Study

Those of you who wish to stay longer than it was scheduled to be in the first place for continued studying in SKKU should apply for extension of study. For application, an international exchange coordinator must officially confirm/allow the exchange student’s extended stay by sending an email to the counterpart at SKKU. Wherever your interests lie, take time to read through these pages to discover the many living options at SKKU. Almost all exchange students live in university residence, unless they request us not to arrange a room for them in advance; SKKU provides exchange students with housing during the academic semester(s) that they are going to attend. SKKU on/off-campus housing for international exchange students includes four dormitories, two on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus and two on the Natural Sciences Campus.

Students who are going to arrive before the designated move-in date should arrange a housing plan by themselves. Please note that we cannot guarantee that we will be able to find off-campus accommodation except for SKKU dormitories. No exchange students, but for 1-year exchange students, is going to be allowed to live in the dormitory after the move-out date. SKKU dormitory is not going to keep your luggage after you leave the dormitory. ■ Move-in: February 23, 2011 (Wednesday) ■ Move-out: June 18, 2011 (Saturday)

15

Accommodation Fee and Payment

All exchange students are expected to pay for housing before due date ends. Please read the following passage to get a clear idea of payment and related policies. [NOTE] * If you fail to submit your payment on time, the contract between you and SKKU may be terminated. * Since only cash is acceptable, please change your currency to Korean Won (KRW) before you pay.

1. Humanities and Social Sciences Campus _ Seoul The housing fee for each dormitory on Seoul campus is assessed based on how far it is located from the campus. All exchange students in both I-House and Koart must pay the housing fee all at once at Woori Bank which is located in the campus.

Payment is due by the date set by the International Office; March 2nd, 2011. A 50,000 KRW late fee will be assessed beginning Thursday of the 1st week of March for any unpaid balance (those who move-in after class begins should pay their housing fee in 3 days). You will get the invoice in your mail box.

The exact fee you are supposed to pay is going to be notified at the dormitory office. You are required to pay the extra fee to the dormitory office upon arrival via bank wire.

[NOTE] * Detailed information about housing/payment will be available at the dormitory office.

16

Dormitory/Room Assignment

All students are assigned to their dormitories and rooms by a random computer lottery process. Only location of campus you choose will be concerned in assigning dormitories to the exchange students. Room, roommate and lifestyle preferences may be submitted via email; however we cannot guarantee preferences for students. In addition, high demand for certain room types and residence theme floors make it impossible to place everyone as requested. Every residence has unique features, and rooms vary in size and layout across campus – most students find that the residence community experience is more important than specific room or building choices. [NOTE] * Visiting students will not be provided housing by the university

Room Changes

In order to be fair to everyone, SKKU IO does NOT allow you to change your assignment. Also, we are also at full capacity each semester, thus room changes are not possible. Many residence students who express disappointment with their building assigned room before arrival generally find that they are quite happy after living within their new community for a week or two, and generally do not want to change rooms after that time. Every year, students tell us that it is not the building that makes the residence home, it is the people.

Residence Confirmation

All exchange students who are going to live in the SKKU dormitory are required to agree with signing on residence confirmation, which is a form provided to you at the orientation and available at the IO, and should be submitted to the IO. Those students who do NOT hand the form in to the IO are going to be responsible for not being aware of statements written on it. [NOTE] * Exchange/visiting students in Natural Sciences campus are not required to fill out and submit the form. They are required to abide by the policies of the office of each dormitory.

17

Everyday Essentials

Banking International exchange students can open an account in Korea. The one you will have an easy access to is Woori

Bank which is located in the campus. To open a new account at Woori Bank, students will need to bring the documents which each bank requires, including their foreigner registration card and passport. Most banking institutions in Korea open at 09:00 and closes at 16:30. Basically, there are two ways of opening a bank account;

1. Foreigner registration card: A foreigner registration card will suffice for opening a bank account 2. Passport and financial guarantor: A financial guarantor who has Korean citizenship is needed for those who do

not possess foreigner registration card. [NOTE] * Those of you who would like to open a bank account upon arrival due to scholarship or dormitory payment concerns are recommended to make use of number one.

Cost of Living in Korea Korean currency (KRW) is called Won – shown as a ₩ before monetary amounts. Denominations are ₩ 10, ₩ 50, ₩

Winter temperatures average just below freezing for most areas of the country, just above freezing on the coast and Jeju

Island. January is the coldest month with the mean temperature ranging from -5 degrees ℃ to 5 degrees ℃. And Precipitation over most of the peninsula averages 1,300 mm per year. Most rain comes during summer, primarily mid-July to early August, but monsoon rains are not continuous: a few days of rain are followed by a few days of clear skies. Most typhoons hit in late July or early September. Some snow falls between December and March.

Transportation Seoul, one of the largest metropolises in the world, has a systematic public transportation which you will find easy

and economical to travel around in Seoul. “Subway and Bus” is a well-connected system charging you by distance. ■ Subway The subway is the easiest and the quickest way to get to your destination in Seoul as the lines run throughout the city. You can buy a one-way ticket with KRW 1,000. A pre-paid card is also useful and convenient if you use the subway often. All signs and most announcements are in both Korean and English. In addition, you can distinguish the lines by their colors and the stops are numbered as well. You can look up relevant information at the official website of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway Corporation at www.seoulsubway.co.kr. ■ Bus There are two types of buses in Korea: the “regular city bus” and the “deluxe bus”. The fare for “regular city buses” is KRW 1000 while the “deluxe buses” cost KRW 1,800 for one-way. For your convenience, it is possible to use a bus card to pay the fare instead of paying by cash. Since bus lines are very complicated even for Seoul residents, we recommend you to use the subway unless you are certain about the bus number and the stop. ■ Taxi Taxis can be expensive if you are traveling a long distance. The basic fare is KRW 2,400 for a regular taxi, and the black luxury taxis (called “deluxe taxis”) will cost more starting at the basic fare of KRW 4,500. 20% of extra fare will be charged from midnight to 04:00 am. There is also a special cabs for international residents living in Korea in which you can use English. ■ T-Money Transit Card T-Money transit card is a plastic card you will scan when you take either the subway or bus, or both in succession.

Type Basic Fare

Remark Subway Bus

T-Money Card KRW 900 KRW 900 After the first 12 km, the fare will go up KRW 100 every 5 km

Cash KRW 1,000 KRW 1,000

If you transfer from the subway to bus or vice versa within 30 minutes, you won’t be charged any additional basic fare. For the within-30-minute benefit, you must always scan the T-Money transit card before getting off the subway or bus. At subway stops, you will find the T-Money selling and recharging devices. You can also re-charge T-Money transit cards at convenience stores nearby.

Mobile Phone Subscription There are three mobile phone service providers in Korea: SK Telecom, KT Show and LG U+. The three of them run

lots of mobile phone shops downtown and the pre-paid mobile phones are the best solution for the short-term visitors like you. The IO may help you out in applying for a cell-phone subscription by giving information about the location of mobile phone shops where you can use English. [NOTE] * Every exchange student is strongly advised to give their mobile phone number to the IO * informative text message might be sent from time to time to keep you updated on newest information about the academic schedule, cultural activities, etc.

Electricity

The standard voltage is 220V. Two-pin plugs are standard on most electrical equipments.

Health Insurance Exchange students are responsible for the cost of treatment during their stay here in Korea should any medical

emergencies arise. Students must therefore have medical insurance coverage as a requirement and verify that the insurance policy you carry covers hospitalization and medical care occurring during international travel, as well as repatriation to your home country in case of medical emergency. For this reason, it is very important that students have adequate health insurance for themselves. [NOTE] * Exchange students are required to purchase insurance, which can cover the period of time they are going to stay, before entry. It is also required to submit a photocopy of the insurance to the IO within the given period. If you did not purchase insurance due to a reasonable excuse, the IO is going to refer you to a health insurance provider in Korea.

Postal Service The intramural post office provides local and international postal service including Express Mail Service (EMS), as

well as a banking service. (Website: http://www.epost.go.kr) ■ Humanities and Natural Sciences Campus: 1F, 600th Anniversary Hall ■ Natural Sciences Campus: 2F, Student Service Center
