Sunday 10th

Teachers, pupils and families welcome American group at the bus stop opposite the school. They will land in Santiago de Compostela at 1 p.m. and there is a bus scheduled to pick them up from the Lavacolla airport at 1.30, so the estimated time of arrival in Vilagarcía is 2.15 p.m.

Everybody goes home with their host families.

Wednesday 13th

Whole-day trip to Valença - A Garda - Tui

We will leave Vilagarcía at 8.30 in the morning. The bus will depart from the bus stop opposite the school and we´ll travel to Valença in Portugal, where we will visit the medieval fortress. Next we will cross the bridge over the River Miño into Galicia again and we will go to A Garda. There we will walk around the village and we´ll stop for lunch. After the meal we will go up the Santa Trega Mountain and see how the River Miño meets the Atlantic Ocean separating Galicia from Portugal; we will also visit the remains of a Celtic fort. Finally we will visit Tui, its cathedral and its medieval streets. The estimated time of arrival back in Vilagarcía is 8.30 p.m.

Our guide´s name is Águeda. She is a professional guide and knows the area very well. And she is doing this trip with us for free!!! (Thanks to Nacho Noya, who is her friend and has asked her to help us).

Thursday 14th

School in the morning

• Breakfast in school canteen at 8.30 a.m. Both American students and Spanish students are invited to a small breakfast during the first period; American teachers will be introduced to our management team.

• School Guided tour at 9.20 a.m. We will have a look at the school premises, the two main buildings, the sports centre, the caretaker´s house, the library, the computer rooms, the offices, the staff rooms, etc.

• Welcome event in auditorium from 10.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. Spanish students will make a presentation about IES Castro Alobre and Upper Dublin pupils will show us a glimpse of their school and where they live. 3ºESO and 4ºESO bilingual sections students are invited to this event at the meeting hall. The event includes a traditional music concert organized by Paloma García, one of our music teachers. Thanks to her and three of our students (David Bueno, Roberto Mariño and Xulia López) you´ll have the opportunity of listening to several traditional instruments, i.e. the zanfona (medieval hurdy gurdy), the gaita (bagpipe), the pandeireta (tambourine) and the tamboril (small drum). • School break.

• Attendance to classes from 11.25 a.m. to 1.55 p.m. During the 4th and 5th periods each American student will be with his/her partner in class. During the last period all USA pupils will attend Pablo Villanueva´s art class in the old building EPV classroom.

Meal with families

Guided Visit of Pontevedra

We will travel to Pontevedra by train. We will take the 17.08 train towards the capital of our province and we will have a guided tour of the historic town. We will take the 21.27 train back to Vilagarcía.

María Buceta, one of our maths teachers, will be the guide (for free as well !!) She was born in Pontevedra, she lives there and she knows her hometown very well.

Saturday 16th

Boat trip in the Arousa estuary

The boat departs from Cambados at 11 a.m. The guided tour lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and includes:

• stop at a batea (platform where mussels and oysters are grown),

• underwater sighting of seabed, and

• tasting of boiled mussels + wine/soft drink on board.

Guided visit of Cambados

Pablo Villanueva, our English Bilingual Sections Art teacher, will give us a guided tour of Cambados from 12.30 to 18.30 (also for free!!!) Obviously, we will make a stop for lunch.

Trip to Santiago de Compostela

Guided tour of the city Visit of the Cathedral roof

We will leave Vilagarcía on the 8.04 train towards Santiago de Compostela. Pablo Villanueva will be our guide again (for free again!!!). We will visit the old city and we will go up to the Cathedral roof.

After the guided tour, we´ll take a bus to As Cancelas shopping centre, where we will have lunch and spend the afternoon shopping. We´ll come back to Vilagarcía on the 19.47 train, whose estimated time of arrival is 20.30 p.m.

Tuesday 19th

Farewell

Students, teachers and families say goodbye to their American guests early in the morning. They leave Santiago de Compostela for Madrid at 9.15 a.m., so they have to be ready to board the bus at 6.00 a.m. (at the bus stop opposite the school).
