Protein Skimmers

EV Series SkimmersThe new EV series skimmers raise their patented spray injection skimming to a new level in terms of efficiency, performance, and value. The redesigned baf-fling system combined with a larger mixing box results in far less turbulence and increased contact time. The net effect is a dramatic increase in skimmer perfor-mance despite a drop in pump pressure requirements. The molded spray injector now generates a significantly larger number of micro bubbles, which is why the skimmers have taller, wider reaction tubes. Also, the new EV series skimmers are designed to run in-sumps WITHOUT BEING RAISED. They have raised the output gate valve to a height of 9", which means that as long as the sump level is 9" or lower, there is no need to worry about fluctuations having an impact on skimming consistency.

The improved flanged and lock-ing collection cup makes for a secure connection without the need for set screws or other locking type unions. Removal requires 1/4" clearance and

cleaning is a snap.

The addition of a precision ball valve for airflow control allows the aquarist to fine tune the skimmer’s output. Unlike most other high per-formance skimmers in this class, the

EV is remarkably silent.

The addition of a John Guest fitting is a great feature that can only be found in AquaC ozone-equipped skimmers. A calcium reactor may also be connected. Effluent typically falls between 6.5–6.9, and over time the addition of this low pH effluent can have a deleterious effect on the system’s pH level. By dosing the effluent directly into the skimmer, excess CO2 will be “blown off” into the atmosphere and the tank pH will remain unaffected. This is a

standard feature on the EV240 and larger models.

EV Series skimmers can be oper-ated with an auto-waste container, available in 2.5 liter (5" x 10") and 5 liter (6" x 12") sizes. Unlike other brands, these waste jugs feature AquaC’s Twist-Lock flanges with EPDM gaskets that are a snap to remove. Simply twist and pull apart—there aren’t any screws to fiddle with! The carbon chamber reduces the skimmate’s foul odor, as well as ozone odors.

Remora Series AccessoriesThe Pre Skimmer Box boosts Remora’s per-formance up to 20%! It is designed to hide the pump and skims water off the top of the tank, which is often coated with a heavy load of organ-ics. It also contains a bubble elim-inating sponge. The water return area can also hold carbon or other media. It installs in seconds.

Urchin Series Skimmers

Remora Hang-On Skimmers RemoraThe search for the most compact, efficient and powerful hang-on-tank skimmer on the market is now over. The AquaC Remora is the most radical design in skimming to date! Using the same patented ‘Spray Induction System’ as their highly acclaimed in-sump skimmers, the AquaC Remora is simply the best hang-on available today. The Remora is rated for up to 75 gallons and requires a scant 2.75" clearance from the back of the tank. That is slim! In addition, it has an extremely low profile, only 6" of vertical clearance is required. Remora ProThe AquaC Remora Pro is essentially a larger, beefier version of the Remora and is rated for tanks over 75 gallons in size. Kent Marine Nautilus Turbo Eductor SkimmerThis skimmer is designed to operate in the SUMP ONLY!!! The Turbo Eductor fitting mixes air with the incoming water; this air is obliterated into mil-lions of miniscule bubbles, and the water/air mix is pumped into the skimmer. Because the exhaust of the skimmer is protected by a baffle, few (if any) bubbles escape from the reaction chamber. The actual exhaust assembly is height-adjustable, allow-ing you to tweak the height of water in the reaction chamber and produce the darkest, driest, dirtiest foam. The Bak-Pak 2 improves upon the Bak-Pak, a popular external, back-hanging protein skimmer and biological filtration unit. This filter incorporates desirable features like an easy-to-clean intake tube and a new enclosed directional outflow that reduces splash and bubbles in the tank. Just hang the unit behind the aquarium, plug it in, and it goes to work. Designed for tanks up to 60 gal, but multiple units may be used successfully in larger aquariums. Measures 7.5" x 3" x 17.5".

The Dual Pak provides a complete hang-on filtration unit for tanks up to 100gal that incorporates two prov-en skimmers with a biological filtration chamber in the middle. Using proven Rio Rejuvenation Venturi technol-ogy, the protein skimmers are flooded with bubbles for constant removal of excess organic. The biological chamber utilizes CPR’s Bio-Bale biological filter media to provide maximum surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. Measures 11.5" x 3.75" x 18". The Bak-Pak 2R+ is designed for use in reef tanks

in which biological filtration is not desired. New “Tri-Chamber” design of the Bak-Pak 2R+ takes the place of the biological section, and when combined with a new and improved outlet design, provides an effective way to reduce bubbles caused by system imbalances. It can be placed easily and discreetly within your aquarium or it can also be used in sumps. The cartridge core on the outlet pipe ensures bubble-free outgoing water. Skimmer cup and foam reactor are one unit. Every cleaning of the skimmer cup leads to the reactor being cleaned at the same time. Tunze Nano DOC Protein SkimmerThe “Nano” model series has been designed for the use in reef biotopes up to 52gal. It removes up to 80% of organic waste matter, such as protein and cellulose, from the aquarium water. Very little space is required in the aquarium, and its handling is very easy. These models are particularly quiet during operation. On account of the high demands in stony coral aquariums, this skim-mer should be used only in aquariums with about 26gal. of water, mixed aquariums or soft coral aquariums up to 52gal of water.

By means of the water jet of the Nano pump and a high-performance jet, a fine pearly air mixture is pro-duced which is released into an easy-to-clean skimmer cup through a newly developed reflection system. The protein-containing aquarium water diffuses into the skimmer through the opening in the bottom and on the rear, which is gentle to the plankton, thus suitable in particular for breeding tanks with living plankton.

Tunze Nano Reefpack 200

It is designed for small reef aquariums from 10 to 50 gal. It consists of a DOC Skimmer 9002 with a 150-liter air output, a mechanical nano filter with a pump (211 gal./h) and a magnet holder. Nitrate Removers

The surface area characteristics of denitrate are similar to Matrix, making denitrate an effective support for the biological filter. Each liter treats up to 100gal.

Kent Marine Nitrate SpongeThis is a granular zeolitic medium which works by two methods: 1) It slowly, but directly adsorbs small amounts of ammonia that are released by fish and natural processes, and 2) it fosters anaerobic bacterial denitrification due to its physical porous structure. This deni-trification slowly reduces nitrate levels in the aquarium. It works well in freshwater tanks or tap water to remove toxic ammonia directly!

Nitrate Test Kits

tipNitrate is not only a stimulant for algae, but has also been shown to be a stimu-lant for dinoflagellates and to have other negative effects on a reef tank as well. When nitrate levels are high they can limit the growth of stony corals by causing an increase in zooanxthellae. This produces two effects: it causes the stony corals to be browner and it slows or reduces calcification. Fish seem to tolerate nitrate much better. However, there have been anecdotal reports that when nitrate levels were high the coloration of the fish diminished and in some instances the fish went blind.

For these reasons, it is a good idea to keep nitrate levels as low as possible. One way to do this is to reduce food input. Overfeeding is still the most com-mon cause of excess nitrate. Improved skimming can also help to reduce excess nitrate. It is also possible to remove nitrate by adding compounds such as AZ-NO3. This additive contains some compounds that bind to nitrate and make it easier to be skimmed off with a protein skimmer. There are also resins available that will reduce nitrate. However, it should be understood that these resins are short-term fixes and are not cures for the problem.

This is primarily intended to be used with phosphate-removal media such as Kent Power Phos and Phosphate Sponge, however it may be used with numerous filtration media to best suit the changing needs of the aquarium. The AquaFuge PRO is the latest in a line of refugiums from CPR Aquatic, Inc. The AquaFuge PRO is a sump-based refugium which incorporates a protein skimmer in order to maintain safe organic levels while also pro-viding for oxygenation of any marine system. Refugiums can be used to cultivate food sources such as algae and micro-fauna while also being used for nutrient export from a marine system. The AquaFuge PRO is designed for use with various mediums including mud, live sand, and live rock.

tipIt all starts at the top. When the concept of external biofiltra-tion was introduced in the 1980’s, the entire concept of how to best filter a tank was changed. The success of these tanks illus-trated that many marine invertebrates that had previously been impossible to keep could now be sustained if water quality was improved. The introduction of overflow boxes to remove waste and surface-active compounds from the tank, along with wet-dry or trickle filters, were the first new pieces of equipment that demonstrably improved water quality. Since then, other pieces of filtration equipment such as the protein skimmer have been introduced to improve water quality even further. However, both of these once-cutting-edge pieces of equipment still have their place in the hobby. Overflow boxes or siphon boxes are devices that allow water to be drawn from the surface of the tank and moved down to a sump or reservoir below the tank. These are very useful devices in that they only allow the surface water from the tank to be drawn off when the water in the tank is above a certain level. When the water drops below this level the overflow box no longer pulls water from the tank. Therefore if the power should go off or if the pump is shut down for cleaning, the overflow box will not allow the tank to drain below a certain point. An overflow box runs continuously, and it does not require the tank to be drilled. A good overflow with lots of flow into and around it will keep dust and oily films from developing on the surface of the tank. This will allow for better light transmission through the surface of the water. An overflow box is essential if any type of sump, refugia, or reser-voir underneath the tank is employed (on a non drilled tank).

Those of us that cannot ask our aquatic friends “where does it hurt” must depend upon less obvi-ous clues as indicators of our animal’s health and well-being. Are fish capable of communicating the status of their health and the stress level of their environment? The simple answer is yes, but dis-tinguishing those signals is a much more complex matter. We can’t train our fish to talk, but we can teach ourselves to recognize the behavioral indica-tors of stress.

The bad news is it is easier to recognize behavioral changes than it is to distinguish the disease or stressful condition that is causing them. The good news is that in many cases the corrective action for many of the challenges to our fish’s well being is the same. For instance, a water change may allevi-ate the problem whether a low pH or high nitrates cause it.

Stress causes physical, chemical and behavioral changes in fish. Stress can cause fish to exhibit behaviors, cease behaviors or modify the degree to which these behaviors are exhibited.

The careful observer can discern these behavioral changes as a signal that something may be amiss. Keep a large batch of water ready at all times for an emergency water change. Test the water parameters on a regular basis and keep a record of the results. Research each species’ dietary, and habitat requirements prior to purchase. Have a stock of medications handy for treating the more common fish diseases. Learn how to effectively treat common aliments or diseases. Maintain a separate quarantine to isolate or treat ill animals. Most importantly, observe each specimen daily so that you can easily spot any change in their behaviors early and keep a “heads up” approach to their condition.

Blue Life Filter Sock (200 Micron)Benefits:Filter socks are the most convenient form of mechanical filtration. They remove excess food, detritus, organic waste, dust, and other particulates. Removing these particulates from the water column will reduce the amount of organic matter that produces ammonia and other undesirable substances in the aquarium. Filter socks also help prevent larger objects, such as sand, crabs, snails, etc. from damaging pump motors. Regular filter sock use will lower organic levels and result in CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER!

Directions:Rinse before use. Filter socks are designed to be used inside a sump or refugium with a mounting bracket or hanging mechanism. Simply place filter sock in path of drain water. Allow water that enters the sump to fall directly into filter sock. Keep the plastic filter sock ring below the top edge of your sump to prevent overflow when filter sock reaches capacity. Filter socks are reusable. Turn sock inside-out and thoroughly rinse with a garden hose. For best results use a high-pressure water nozzle. Rinsing should be preformed when filter sock turns brown or when water overflows. Frequent rinsing helps to achieve optimal water quality.

Important:First time use of a brand new filter sock may cause increased protein skimming. Normal protein skim-ming function should resume within 24 hours. Be careful to monitor protein skimmer collection cup level so that it does not overflow.

Activated Carbon is the most common filter media

that is used for aquariums. It does an excellent job

of removing organics from the water and helps

tipIt has long been recommended that ozone be used in marine tanks for many rea-sons including its ability to kill many pathogens and make the water crystal clear. Ozone (O3), which is an unstable form of oxygen, acts by oxidizing with (giving up an oxygen molecule to) anything that it comes in contact with. In laymen’s terms, ozone acts as bleach and kills things like bacteria and viruses on contact. Not only does this bleaching action help reduce the pathogen load in a tank, but ozone also interacts with dissolved organics in a tank to make them less interactive so that they can easily be removed by a protein skimmer. This is why when the saltwater hobby was starting out forty years ago, the use of a protein skimmer coupled with an ozonizer was highly recommended.

Ozone does not need to be run constantly, but can be run for short periods of time once a month to keep a tank crystal clear or when the redox potential drops below a certain level. Ozone should also be utilized when a tank is being started and live rock is being cured to remove as much of the dissolved organics as possible. Ozone should also be run constantly when a disease breaks out. Ozone cannot affect the pathogens that are on the fish, but if any free-swimming pathogens come into contact with it in its reaction chamber or in the skimmer they will be killed. Ozone needs to be kept out of the tank as it bleaches any organic matter that it comes into contact with. It should either be bubbled into a protein skimmer or into its own reaction chamber. When it is in use, the water should then flow over carbon to keep any ozone from reaching the tank itself. If ozone does get into the tank it can cause bleaching of the gills of fish, so this needs to be avoided.

As noted above, ozone is highly interactive and as a result it needs to be used with special equipment. Any tubing that it passes through needs to be of silicon, which does not interact with ozone. If regular airline tubing is used, it will become hard and brittle quite quickly when exposed to ozone. Similarly, most plastics will become brittle and crack when exposed to ozone so be careful when choosing a vessel for introducing ozone. Ozone also breaks down quickly when exposed to high humidity so it is best to run the air going into the ozonizer through an air drier. This will dramatically increase the production of ozone.
